“It’s a great decision by Siemens to extend DSIII manufacturing facility in India”, Mahesh Inamdar, Forbes Marshall

With 60 years of experience in building steam engineering and control instrumentation solutions, Forbes Marshall is a leader in the area of process efficiency and energy conservation for the process industry. The company was ranked the 5th best place to work in India for the year 2013 by Great Place to Work Institute and The Economic Times. A customer for many years, Forbes Marshall is one of the first users from India to enjoy faster delivery of transmitters. Reason being the state-of-the-art assembly and configuration centre for SITRANS DSIII pressure transmitters is now operational in India. Mahesh Inamdar, Manager PIEC- Project, Forbes Marshal herewith elaborates on the benefits gained by them owing to Siemens’ ‘localization’ strategy. Excerpts of the edited interview:

1. How long have you been using Siemens DSIII pressure transmitters? What has been your experience on the product’s performance?

We have been associated with Siemens for many years. For transmitters in particular, we have been using Siemens’ products for more than 10 years. Our overall experience has been good. Being known for their innovation, Siemens improvise their products on a continuous basis, which not only enhances user experiences but also ensures that we are using the latest technology. Siemens has retained the flexibility, ease of operation and user-friendly selection, despite changes to the model owing to product improvisations.

2. Forbes Marshall is one of the first companies to switchover to Indian Configuration center for DSIII transmitters. How has this change impacted you?

It’s a great decision by Siemens to extend manufacturing facility in India and we are really proud to be one of the first companies to use the locally manufactured transmitter. While the ‘localization’ is helping Siemens come closer to customers, we benefited with improved delivery lead times. This in-turn helped us in completing our projects, which also included various types of transmitters, on time and winning loyal customers with faster services & timely deliveries.

3. Any specific advantages that you have gained ever since Siemens began assembling this product locally

Faster delivery is definitely one of the key benefits that we have gained. From 8-10 weeks, delivery time has reduced to 3-4 weeks or even a few days in case of urgent requirements.

In addition to the standard pressure and differential pressure transmitters, Siemens expanded the configuration center to include absolute pressure transmitters as well as explosion proof version of all the transmitters. The delivery lead time for all variants has been consistent. Apart from this, Siemens also arranges customer visits for calibration checks etc. The new center is well organized & automated as per customer requirement.

4. How has been your overall experience on the technology and services provided by Siemens?

As far as technology is concerned, Siemens is a pioneer. We hardly require any service for DSIII transmitters, owing to the high quality of the product. However whenever there is any requirement, Siemens has been very prompt in providing services either on phone or through personal visits to resolve customer queries.

Savings with smart PositionerEconomical handling of compressed air helped renowned power company increase energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emission

In their bid to become competitive, power generation companies are searching for ways to optimize their operations and cut their costs. Consumption of compressed air — long neglected in cost considerations — has gained significance in recent years and with it, the use of modern electro-pneumatic positioners.

A renowned private power generation company in western India decided to upgrade their conventional flapper nozzle based pneumatic positioners to Siemens SIPART PS2 digital positioners. The major factors considered for selecting Siemens SIPART PS2 positioner were precise position control, ease of handling, low air consumption and ruggedness.

This power company, with an installed base of over 260 SIPART PS2 positioners, has not only achieved excellent process control after switching over but also saved a huge amount of money on account of low air consumption. This saving was to an extent that it eliminated the need for an additional compressor, which they had originally planned as part of the modernization project

SIPART PS2 positioner has an internal air consumption of 0.036 Nm3/hr. Such a low air consumption is

possible due to piezo valves. Piezo valves work on binary principle, i.e. once the steady state is achieved there is no air bleed till further changes occur in set point.

SIPART PS2 digital positioner has helped the customer achieve improved energy efficiency. Further it has also reduced their CO2 emissions thereby contributing to a greener and cleaner world. Siemens SIPART PS2 Positioner is truly a green product!

at pre-defined time interval.

This customer today has more than 270 units of MAG 8000 flow meters installed across the city on various pipelines that provides continuous monitoring of their water distribution network. With the required certifications, SITRANS MAG 8000 also helped the Board consistently provide clean water to the natives of the city.

This only reiterates Siemens’ capabilities and domain knowledge to manage water supply and distribution networks.

[email protected]

A Petroleum Public Sector enterprise has a pipeline network carrying oil and gas products and stretching across the states of Rajasthan, Haryana and Gujarat. With each state having different geographical conditions and each pipeline carrying a distinct quality of petroleum, monitoring the flow rate of the product was a challenge for the customer.

The Water Supply Board of a growing metro city in south of India had the onus of not only ensuring distribution of clean water but also regulating its tariffs based on the actual consumption of water by end users. With a complex network of water distribution pipelines stretched throughout the

length and breadth of the city, it was a challenge for the board to monitor the flow of water from a central location, which was the head office.

Siemens provided the answer with SITRANS MAG 8000 Battery operated Magnetic flow meter. The internal battery design ensured continuous operation of the flow meter even in remote locations where electrification was a constraint. The flow volume along with flow rate and pressure were wirelessly transmitted from the flow meter using the GSM/GPRS based communication mode. This guaranteed uninterrupted and reliable data transmission
