Pre-analytical System
Each multitube carrier has an embedded microchip that carries the route code information. This unique feature minimizes the barcode reading thus presenting a lower error risk and at the same time offering excellent tracking possibilities.
After centrifugation and decapping, samples can be routed to exit modules to be sorted out into standard output, analyzer specific racks or storage racks. Samples requiring aliquoting are routed to the TCAutomation Aliquoter & Labeler where secondary tubes are prepared and aliquots dispensed.
The TCAutomation pre-analytical system can easily be expanded, e.g., with interfaces to different analysers.

TCAutomation system helps customers to manage increasing workloads, improve turn-around-time and ensure greater safety and quality in the workplace. The labour-intensive pre-analytical tasks such as centrifugation, decapping, sorting and aliquoting are automated. The system is easily expandable with additional modules, thus offering a smooth way to meet future needs.
The TCAutomation pre-analytical system offers flexible configurations to meet the specific needs of laboratory within the available space. One configuration can include several modules of the same type depending on laboratory’s workload.
In a pre-analytical system, samples can be loaded individually or in input racks. The sample’s barcode is read and a route query is made to the TCA Controller. The sample ID and route code (route to the next module) is written into the memory of the carrier, and after that the sample is released to the main conveyor. Samples move along the conveyor in these single tube carriers that can accommodate several different tube sizes.

Fully automated sample input and sorter module
TCAutomation ES Flex module is a fully automated sample input and sorter module. The module can sort tubes internally into analyzer or customer specific racks without releasing them into the main conveyor. Storage exit racks can be used as a validation area where samples can be retrieved, e.g., for additional testing.
The ES Flex module manages a wide mix of sample tubes detecting automatically if the tube has a cap or not. The robot unloads samples from the racks in carriers. Samples are released to the conveyor after the barcode is read. When the sample comes into the module, the robot loads the sample from the carrier to the rack. If the sample tube is requested back, the robot unloads the sample from the exit rack to the carrier, and the sample is released to the conveyor.
Each tray of the module is dedicated to a certain rack type. The rack type is written to the tray’s barcode which is read before operation.

TCAutomation Exit is a module where tubes, already processed, can be manually unloaded from the system one by one.
Samples that are ready are routed to the exit module where the user can remove them one by one. Information from the carrier is erased and empty carriers are released to the main conveyor. The Exit Module has a sensor which distinguishes if the carrier is empty or not. Only empty carriers move on past the stopper.

Automating loading, balancing and unloading of the centrifuge racks
TCAutomation Centrifuge automates loading, balancing and unloading of the centrifuge racks.
Samples are automatically loaded into the centrifuge racks and these racks are then balanced and transferred into the centrifuge. Three robotic arms are used to achieve the optimum performance. Several user definable parameters, e.g., spin time and temperature, offer flexibility.
One TCAutomation system can include more than one centrifuge module depending on the throughput requirements.

TCAutomation Aliquoter & Labeler prepares secondary tubes and dispenses aliquots from a primary sample into these secondary tubes.
Required number of aliquots is made from samples which need aliquoting. The level and clot detection ensures optimum sample handling. Analyzer specific module to interface point-in-space aspirating instruments
TCAutomation Bypass is an analyzer specific module to interface instruments that are capable of direct track aspirating.
Tubes are routed to the specific bypass modules according to the route info related to the test requests. The tube is centred with a gripper on the aspirating position. After sampling, the tube is released to the main conveyor and can be routed, e.g., to the following analyzer bypass. The STAT sample handling is secured with a possibility to limit the routine sample queue size.
Many analyzers can easily be connected to the TCAutomation system. Combining two or more analyzers into one system offers increased analyzer throughput, higher efficiency and longer walk-away time.

Analyzer-specific interfaces for analyzers requiring robotic transfer of a sample tube
Analyzer-specific TCAutomation interfaces are available for analyzers that require a robotic transfer of a sample tube.
A robotic module transfers tubes from carriers to analyzer specific racks. Racks are then moved into the analyzer. After sampling, tubes are transferred back to the interface where barcodes are read, tubes are unloaded from racks to carriers and routed forward on the automation track.
In the ARCHITECT interface modules, the automation system is used for sample handling and routing. The tube is centered with a gripper on the aspirating position. After sampling the tube is released to the conveyor.
In the Sysmex HST interface, TCA the samples stay after aspirating in the Sysmex system and they are not returned back to the automation track.

CCM and CRA Interface Modules
Connection interfaces into Roche automation systems
TCA Interface for CCM is interface module between Roche Automation pre-analytical and TCAutomation systems. TCA Interface for CCM picks sample tubes from racks received from Roche pre-analytical modules. The CCM module positions the sample tubes into sample carriers and reads sample barcodes, functioning as an entry module to the TCAutomation system.
The TCAutomation CRA (Connector to Roche Automation) Interface is a module that connects a TCAutomation system to a Roche Automation system. CRA Interface receives patient sample test tubes from Roche Automation System Cobas™ 8100 or CCM, moves the samples to analyzers connected to the TCAutomation system, and sends the tubes back to the Roche Automation system.

Storage area for empty carriers or for samples waiting for validation
TCAutomation Buffer functions either as a storage area for empty carriers or as location for samples waiting for validation.
Samples from different analyzer bypasses can be routed to a buffer to wait for the result acceptance and re-routing. Furthermore, empty carriers can be stored in the buffer module until another module, e.g., centrifuge requests carriers.

Three signal tower lights - green, yellow and red - indicate the status of the system to the operator at a glance. Routing media
TCAutomation multitube carrier is used for transporting sample tubes along the conveyor and as routing media. Each carrier has an embedded microchip (RFID).
Once the barcode has been read in the entry module, a route query is sent to the TCA Controller. The Controller responses by sending a route code (route to the next module) for the sample. This information together with the sample ID is written into the chip. The route code is updated each time the carrier leaves a module.
