During my latest safari in South Afr ica I had the oppor tunity to compare my CZ Safari Classics r i f le chambered in .450 Rigby to its predecessor, a Brno 602 chambered in .458 WinMag, Made in 1984, the Brno 602 is s t i l l in dai ly ser vice with my PH. Time has put several scratches on the s tock and the bluing on the metal par ts has worn of f , but the majestic look of the r i f le and the achievements and hunting s tories behind it make me very proud to be associated with CZ.

SINGLE SET TRIGGERThe CZ single set tr igger (SST) system provides the shooter with the options to ef fectively handle any shooting situation they are presented with.

The SST al lows for both a s tandard hunting tr igger and a l ight target tr igger in the same r i f le. By operating the r i f le in the same manner as any other bolt -action r i f le, the tr igger is in the “s tandard” mode with the heavier of the two tr igger pulls. By simply pushing the tr igger for ward unti l i t “cl icks” the crisp and l ight target tr igger mode is set.

I t has been said that the single set tr igger is a better aid to accuracy than a thousand dollar scope.

This exam combined with the Rifa Professional Hunter and Guides training/refresher course provides an insightful gl impse into the r i f les these dangerous game professionals trust their l ives to as well as those of their cl ients. According to Don Heath, Editor of Afr ican Hunter Magazine, the CZ is by far the most common make seen at the exam.

CZ, BRNO, ZKK ri f les - al l these names point to one gun factory located in the Czech Republic with 70 years of his tory and tradit ion of gun making. CZ 550 actions are revered the

world over due to the t ime honored features. The Mauser s tyle claw extractor for posit ive feeding and extraction, and compact tr igger mechanism, which can be used as a s tandard or target tr igger. The CZ 550 has a posit ive 2-posit ion safety. Al l CZ 550s feature a classic square bridge receiver with a 19mm dovetai l mil led r ight into the receiver. Al l barrels are hammer forged and feature express sights (1 s tanding, 2 folding).

The modern medium car tr idges can surely ki l l dangerous game, but there is a vast dif ference between shooting an undis turbed animal, compared to a charging one or a wounded beast. In this case s topping power is the most impor tant cr iteria. Safety must always come f irs t and the r i f le that is capable of del ivering results is imperative.

The .404 Jef fery was introduced in 1909 by Jef fery of England to duplicate .450/400 (3 ¼”) per formance in a car tr idge designed for bolt action r i f les. The .404 drives a 400 grain bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2170 fps.

The .450 Rigby is based on the classic .416 Rigby case. While it is has been around for only jus t over 10 years, this car tr idge has gained a reputation as the most ef fective dangerous game s topping car tr idge for s tandard magnum sized actions. The 465 grain bullet del ivers over 2300 fps at the muzzle.

The .505 Gibbs was developed as a proprietary car tr idge for use in the Mauser type bolt action r i f les by George Gibbs around 1910. The bullet weight is 525 grains and it leaves the muzzle at 2300 fps.

CZ-USA of fers its own headstamped ammunit ion (loaded by A -Square) to complement the Safari Classic r i f les. The Monolithic Solids are craf ted from a single al loy for superior s trength, r igidity and hardness for the ult imate in deep, bone-crushing penetration. Dead Tough Sof t Points are great al l -around big-game bullets for deep penetration and control led expansion.
