RFID= Radio Frequency Identification

RFID is an abbreviation for Radio Frequency Identification. With this technology, data is transmitted contactless and without visual contact from a data carrier, the so-called transponder or tag, to an RFID reader and vice versa.

The term transponder is composed of the words Transmitter and responder.

RFID system

A conventional RFID system consists of three components:An RFID reader, an RFID antenna, an RFID transponder (or tag) electronically programmed with unique data.

1 . R F I D - B a s i c s1.1 RFID Technology

The reader generates an alternating electromagnetic field and emits this via a connected antenna. If a transponder is in the alternating field, it draws power from the alternating field to power the micro-chip it contains. This enables the transponder, while in the field, to receive read and write com-mands from the reader, and to execute and respond to them without its own power supply.The RFID reader decodes the received data and forwards it to a switched host system depending on the application. RFID readers operate with different output powers and use different frequency ranges depending on requirements.A selection of the readers offered can be found in the individual frequency ranges.

1.2 RFID Reader

The heart of an RFID system is a data carrier called a transponder or tag. The transponders also differ in terms of design and function, just like the antennas, depending on the frequency range. Passive transponders do not have their own power supply and obtain their energy by setting up an induction field with the help of the radio signals of the reader. Depending on the application, trans-ponders are available in many different sizes, types and protection classes. Common shapes are mainly adhesive labels or chip cards.

1.4 RFID Transponder

An RFID antenna ensures the transmission of radio signals between transmitter and receiver. It emits the electromagnetic waves generated by the reader and receives the radio signals from the transponder. Antennas are available in different sizes and designs. Their shape and size depends on the environment in which the system is integrated. Also the desired read and writing ranges have an influence on the design.

1.3 RFID Antenna

In order to adapt perfectly to the respective requirements, RFID systems work with different frequen-cy ranges. A distinction is made between three frequency ranges: low-frequency, high-frequency and ultra-high frequency.

The technology of the RFID antennas differ in structure and functionality and in dependency of the frequency range used. HERMOS offers a selection of standard antennas in the different frequency ranges (LF, HF and UHF) for various applications.

The HERMOS RFID LFM LP Writer/Reader is a HERMOS LFM class (LF Midrange) device, which communicates with passive LF-transponders.It is designed for small-scale auto-ID solutions in trade and industry. High quality components makes the rea-der very reliable and error resistant. The device can be used in metallic environments. It is particulary suitable for clean room applications requiring read distance in the mid range area.

The HERMOS RFID-LFM-Reader is a HERMOS LFM class (LF Midrange) read and write device, which com-municates with passive transponders in the LF range (134.2 kHz). The reader can also be used in metallic environments. Four antenna connections enable the connection with several identification points. Each antenna connection has its own antenna adjustment that adapts the connec-ted antenna to the ambient conditions. RS232 and Ethernet data interfaces are available.

The RFID Reader HFP is a handheld reader for 134.2 kHz TIRIS transponders conforming to ISO Standard 18000-2 with USB-Interface. The reader can work in modus keyboard emulation and emulation RS232 interface. A reading process is triggered by pressing a button and indicated by an LED and a signal tone if the identificationis successful. Depending on selected operating mode, the read data is either directly output in an active input field (as with a keyboard input) or sent via an emulated RS232 interface (virtual COM port) in a defined ASCII protocol.

The LF Rod Antenna S in the gray standard housing is a universally applicable and very com-pact solution for the LF range. The antenna is of-fered with a variable connection. You can choose between Lemo standard plug, straight (picture) or angled and SMA plug. The wiring is made via a 50Ω coaxial cable (RG174 / AWG26). We offer different cable lengths.

The RFID Reader HFP is a handheld reader for 13.56 MHz transponders conforming to ISO Standard 15693. The reader is automatically recognised when connected to a USB port without driver installation. A reading process is triggered by pressing a button and indicated by an LED and a signal tone if the identification is successful. The read data is displayed in an active input field or an application program as with a keyboard entry (HID Human Device Interface).

The RFID reader HFS E-Sign is a reader for 13.56 MHz transponders conforming to ISO standard 15693. Due to its small size, the E-Sign Reader is ideal for direct ope-ration at the reading point. This reader is also a practical, effective and extremely affordable alternative to quickly and easily add RFID capability to PCs. The reader is available in RS232 and USB versions. The RFID WIP rack solution from HERMOS offers the possibility to equip grid racks with RFID functionality. This solution can be used for all common shelf types and siz-es and allows retrofitting of existing shelves. The antenna heads are assembled directly on the shelf and connected to a central reading unit. The occupancy of a shelf space is detected by an inte-grated light sensor and automatically identified. Visualisation at the shelf locations is provided by a mul-ti-coloured LED or an E-Ink display. The shelf status and inventory changes can be displayed on a Panel PC.

The HERMOS UFS COMPACT READER is a reader/writer for UHF transponders in compliance with ISO 18000 - 6C. Due to its small size, the COMPACT Rea-der is ideal for direct operation at the reading point. 4.13 UFC KANBANFLOW RACK

The Kanban Flow Rack solution is used for convenient monitoring of material stocks in continuous warehouses and is based on innovative HERMOS RFID reader technology. With an integrated stop mechanism, the system checks every individual storage and retrieval process. This guarantees that only authorised material is supplied and withdrawals are automatically detected. The RFID technology can easily be retrofitted into exis-ting Kanban roller conveyors.

The RFID Kanban Mailbox from HERMOS ensures a smooth subsequent delivery of materials such as C-parts or articles from distant warehouses by the immediate and automatic transmission of order data. It is primarily de-signed for applications in which a local network cannot be accessed for data transmission, but a stand-alone solution is required. Communication is done via GSM/GPRS.
