Main Language DataThere are approximately 300 different languages recorded in the Settlement Database. This data is obtained from a number of different sources, depending on the settler’s migration stream. For settlers who enrol with the Adult Migrant Education Program (AMEP) after arrival in Australia, additional language data comes from the AMEP Reporting and Management System (ARMS) database.
Main Language is not recorded for all clients on the Settlement Database. It may be missing for portions of settlers in the Skilled and Family visa streams. This variable is captured well for the Humanitarian stream however, particularly for more recently arrived settlers.
Main Language Data Structure
In the Settlement Reporting Facility Main Language data is grouped into three levels. These are:
Language Broad Groups to; Language Sub-Groups to; Language

Main Language Criteria and Filters
Criteria
If you select the Main Language Criterion, then your report output will display and give a figure for each of the individual main languages in this listing.
In the SRF there is one criterion available for main language data. This is:
Main Language
Filters
Filters work differently to criteria; they allow you to narrow down your report data. If you were only interested in settlers with a specific main language, you would use the Main Language (Direct) filter to narrow down your data.
When you select a filter you will be presented with the list of fields available for that filter. Some filters have more than one layer, such as the Main Language (Regions) filter. This means that you begin by selecting field/s from the top most layer and can narrow your search down to one of the lower levels if you wish.
In the SRF there are two filters for main language data. These are:
Main Language (Direct); and Main Language (Regions)
The Main Language (Regions) filter has more than one layer. This includes:

Language Broad Group to; Language Sub-Group to; Main Language
The S RF D a t a Dicti o n a r y includes a table which shows how each individual Main Language fits into the Language Sub and Broad Groups.
Arrival Date, Visa Grant Date & Settlement Date
The SRF allows reports to be generated by either arrival date or grant date.
Arrival Date
Reports generated by arrival date will include only those settlers whose recorded arrival date falls within the selected Date Range.
Visa Grant Date
Reports generated by visa grant date will only include those settlers whose recorded visa grant date is within the selected Date Range.
Settlement Date (Using Arrival Date and Visa Grant Date together)
To get a more accurate count of settlers in a specific location, it is recommended to use both arrival date and visa grant date. In order to do this, two reports must be run. The first report selects arrival date for visas which were granted offshore (i.e. outside of Australia) and the second report selects grant date for visas which were granted onshore (i.e. in Australia).

Location Data: Tips and Tricks
When generating a report by Main Language, there are several things to remember:
Main Language is not recorded for all settlers in the Settlement Database. It may be missing for portions of settlers in the Skilled and Family visa streams. This variable is captured well for the Humanitarian stream however, particularly for more recently arrived settlers.

Producing a report for all individual main languages
Main Language criteria
To generate a report that contains all main languages, you will need to:
Select a Report Type.
Select the Main Language option from the Report Criteria drop down menu.
Select Arrival or Visa Grant Date
Select the Date Range.
Click on the Next button.
Type the security word as it is seen on screen.
Click on the Submit report button.

Select Arrival or Visa Grant Date
Select the Date Range.
Click on the Next button.
Select the Main Language/s that you want included in the report by clicking on it in the left-hand column.
Click on the Next button.
Type the security word as it is seen on screen.
Click on the Submit report button.

Main Language criteria used in conjunction with Main Language (region) filter
To generate a report that shows numbers of settlers for a language broad group, you will need to:
Select a Report Type.
Select the Main Language option from the Report Criteria drop down menu.
Click on (click to show/hide filters) >to view all filter
Select the Main Language (region)filter.
Select Arrival or Visa Grant Date

Select the Date Range
Click on the Next button.
Click on the Language Broad Group/s that you want included in the report by clicking on it in the left-hand column.
Click on the Next button.
Click on Next button without selecting any sub-region languages
Type the security word as it is seen on screen.
Click on the Submit report button.

Note that the report shows numbers for the Language Sub-Groups not the Language Broad Groups. However, the total could be used as the total number of settlers for the selected Broad Group.

To generate a report that shows number of settlers for a language sub-group, you will need to:
Select a Report Type.
Select the Main Language option from the Report Criteria drop down menu.
Click on (click to show/hide filters) >to view all filter

Select the Date Range.
Click on the Next button.
Click on the Language Broad Group/s that you want included in the report by clicking on it in the left-hand column.
