Tes1
BS 4 76-3: 2004 (Extemal fire exposure roof test)
What this test means
A.esult
Dependent on single--ply membrane adopted
These classifications are performance results from "BS 476-3- Fire tests on building structures
classification & method of test for external fire exposure to roofs." This is a 3 stage test onto a full
roof build up (our boards are not tested in isolation under this standard). This means that the result
is largely dependent on the type of waterproofing being used in conjunction with the insulation
materia l. The grading system used to classify each system has 3 parts.
Roof systems shall be designated by the letters EXT. F. or EXT. S. to indicate whether the test results
apply to a flat (horizontal) or an inclined roof system, respectively. Roof systems subject to
conditions of external fire shall be classified according to both the time of penetration and the
distance of spread of flame along their external surface. Each category designation shall consist of
two letters, e.g. AA, AC, BB, these being determined as specified as below;
Fire Penetration (first letter)
A. Those specimens that have not been penetrated within one hour.
B. Those specimens that are penetrated in not less than 30 min.
C. Those specimens that are penetrated in less than 30 min.
D. Those specimens that are penetrated in the preliminary flame test.
Spread of Flame (second letter)
A. Those specimens on which there is no spread of flame.
B. Those specimens on which the spread of flame is less than or equal to 533 mm, with averaged
results rounded up or down to whole number, as normally practised.
C. Those specimens on which the spread of flame is greater than 533 mm, with averaged results
rounded up or down to whole number, as norma lly practised.
D. Those specimens that continue to burn for five minutes after the withdrawal of the test flame or
spread more than 381 mm across the region of burning in the preliminary test.
EXAMPLE- EXT. F. AA is a flat roofing system with one hour fire penetration resistance on which
there was no spread of flame.

9 Behaviour in relation to fire
j~ 9. 1 The product has a reaction to fire classification of Class F to BS EN 1350 1-1 : 2007.
"~9.5 A fire test was undertaken on a 112 mm thick wall-sized assembly to BS 4762 1 : 1987, comprising tJl . 100 mm by 50 mm softwood studs at nomina l 600 mm centres w ith an outer face of 9 mm thick oriented strand
board (OSB) na iled to the studs. Nominal 75 mm thick panels were fitted between studs and held in place by 25 mm square battens nailed to the studs. The exposed surface had nom inal 12.5 mm thick, Type 1 plasterboard nailed to the studs . A sing le timber stud of the same dimension as the vertical studs was fixed across the head and base of the assembly . A loadbearing capacity, integrity and insu lation of 50 minutes was achieved .
9.6 An assembly wi th an overal l thickness of 176 mm was tested to BS EN 1365-1 : 20 12, and the load bearing capacity, integri ty and insulation achieved 49 minutes, hence achieving a fire resistance of REI 45. The build-up of the test specimen was as fol lows:
• Six softwood timber studs (38 mm by 38 mm) at 600 mm centres, clad on the unexposed face w ith a single layer of 9 mm thick OSB .
• An inner layer of 25 mm th ick K 1 1 2 fixed to the OSB, with 70 mm thick K 1 1 2 fitted between the timber studs.
• The exposed surface of the assembly was clad wi th a single layer of 15 mm thick plasterboard , screwed to the timber battens.
KS questions
The render system providers would undertake tests themselves, as it is always the full system that is
tested. i.e including render etc
However K5 has been included in a number of successful 8414 tests in insulated render systems. For
example Alumasc have tested their full system build-up which included K5
Customer would need to contact their render system supplier.
KlS
Kooltherm K15 is a rigid phenolic foam insulation board that is classified as Euroclass C-s1-d0 in
accordance with BS EN 13501-1. Kooltherm K15 has both a BBA certificate and an LABC Registered
Detail which detail its scope for approval and application. The BBA certificate breaks down a number
of the successful large scale fire tests featuring K15. These tests have been completed to show that
the product can meet the onerous performance requirements of BR 135, and subsequently be
approved for use on buildings above 18m in height. To date, Kooltherm K15 has featured in 7
successful large scale BS8414 tests that have met the BR 135 performance criteria (see Appendix B
of attached Technical Bulletin).

Optim-R
Statement from BDA
9 Behaviour in re lation to fire the product does not prejudice the f ire-resistance properties of walls, flat roofs or so lid concrete ground f loors. Therefore, th' insulation will not contribute to the development stages of a fire or present a smoke or toxic hazard; when properly installed, the product will not add significantly t o any existing f ire hazard; the product will be contained within the bu ilding envelope construction by the overlay until the overlay itself is destroyed. Therefore, the products will not contribute to the development stages of a f ire or present a smoke or toxic hazard; the continuity of fi re resistance must be maintained, for example as described in: England/Wales- Approved Document B, Volume 1, Sect ions 5.11 to 5.12; Scotland·Mandatory Standard 2.2, clause 2.2.1 0; Northern lreland-Technical Booklet E, paragraph 3.21; Ireland Building Regu lations 1997 to 2011 , relevant provisions; the use of the product wil l not affect the f ire rating obtained by f lat roofs when eva luated by assessment or test to BS 476-3:2004 19
.
Note Euro class rating on BDA is shown as C, this is not incorrect and =as changed to E as listed on
DOP.
Worth knowing for Otpim-R with TR27 (EcoTherm) overlay.
Sika LP have already tested a full system to EN 1187 including their Decothane Ultra 20, Decotherm
{25mm) and Optim-R {40mm) which achieved a Broof (t4) classification. Typically it will be the system
supplier that undertakes this test as the result is contingent on the full system performance.

EcoTherm guidance
We can confirm, EcoTherm insulation do not specify or have a product to be used in multi storey
high rise buildings, above 18mtr behind rainscreen cladding systems. We would always recommend
the use of the insulated Rainscreen systems that have passed the relevant large scale fire tests and
approvals.
Eco-Protect information
To achieve class 0 you need both:
To achieve Class 1 in 8S476 Part 7 Surface Spread of Flame Test (see below)
To achieve a suitable Fire Propagation Index in 8S476 Part 6 Fire Propagation Test (see below)
Class 1 in BS476 Part 7 Surface Spread of Flame Test This specifies a method of test for measuring the lateral spread of flame along the surface of a
specimen of a product orientated in the vertical position under opposed flow conditions, and a
classification system based on the rate and extent of the spread of flame.
BS476 Part 6 Fire Propagation Test
This test measures the amount of heat released when the product under test is burned. To qualify
for Class 0 rating the material or the surface of a composite product must achieve a fire propagation
index (I)- overall test performance- of not more than 12 and sub-index (i1)- first three minutes of
test- of not more than 6.
What this means is that in the test conditions, when the sample is exposed to the ignition source,
the lateral spread of flame does not exceed 165mm within 10 minutes.
