SCIENCEDamage that occurs to hair after chemical treatment is a result of the structural integrity of the cuticle being compromised. When the structure of the hair cuticle is degraded, hair is more susceptible to breakage. Hair needs a solid foundation to prevent damage, and the building block of hair is protein. Our hair is full of protein, which is necessary to strengthen and restore the hair fiber. “Chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength” and chia seeds are a nutritional powerhouse composed of 23% protein, which can help restore the strength of the hair. ProCutiGen® Bond is a lipopeptide derived from chia protein, harnessing the natural strength of the seed for hair protection.

The bivalent cation of ProCutiGen® Bond is the anchor to secure the neo-cuticle, as hair is naturally anionic. The specific amino acid composition, the structural material of the anchor, allows these properties which differentiate the bio-films formed by the ProCutiGen® line. Film-forming properties are a popular claim in hair care, however this is boring and usually misleading. A film can loosely be defined as a thin layer of something, by that definition, water on the skin is a film. A bio-film is of much more interest; a polymeric chain forming a conglomeration of proteins, amino acids and polysaccharides that creates a complex, supporting, interwoven matrix on the hair cuticle. A major benefit of the bio-film is its action as a scaffolding rather than a true barrier. Able to support and protect hair, this scaffolding allows small molecules, like those in harsh chemical treatments, in via its semi-permeable facade. It is this bio-film and its semi-permeable membrane that promotes the exhibition of properties such as moisturization, pH balance, barrier protection, and additionally, protection from hair weakening after exposure to chemical processes.

EFFICACY DATAAs seen in Figures 1-10, the Standard Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging demonstrates that, untreated hair is already prone to damage from everyday stressors, showing characteristic signs of breakdown. Treating hair with ProCutiGen® Bond, makes a difference at the microscopic level. The SEM images depict how the outermost layer of the hair, the cuticle, is affected by bleach treatments as well as chemical relaxing treatments. When the untreated images are compared to both the ProCutiGen® Bond treated swatches, a significant decrease in damage of the cuticle is exhibited.

Figures 1-5 are the SEM images showing the effect of ProCutiGen® Bond on hair treated with bleach. Figures 6-8 are the SEM images showing the effect of ProCutiGen® Bond on hair treated with a chemical relaxer. These images clearly depict the ability of ProCutiGen® Bond to protect hair from harsh chemical treatments.

A half head study was conducted to determine the comparison of a control shampoo vs. 2.0% ProCutiGen® Bond in the control shampoo. Additionally, a comparison between the control conditioner and 2.0% ProCutiGen® Bond in the control conditioner were reported. Each volunteer’s hair was photographed prior to the treatment and again after the shampoo and conditioner had been applied and the hair was styled. The images of the half head study were used in conjunction with a sensory assessment subjectively rating the parameters - cleansing, smoothing, dry and wet combability, anti-frizz, overall feel, shine and hydration. This assessment was conducted both before and after treatment. Based on the results in Figures 9 through 17, ProCutiGen® Bond is capable of enhancing smoothing, wet and dry combability, anti-frizz, overall feel, shine and hydration when used in a conditioner.

Hirox 3D Microscopic Examination is a test method for microscopic examination of hair samples. Damage of the hair fiber can be seen within these images in which the damaged areas of the fiber fluoresce. The more fluorescence a fiber exhibits, the more damaged. HIROX images were quantified via histograms to offer a number value to the fluorescence of the hair.

Within the bleached images below, significantly less damage can be viewed on both the Untreated Virgin swatch and ProCutiGen® Bond treated swatches. Whereas the bleached only swatches, both 30V and 40V fluoresce brightly signifying the extent of damage. The ProCutiGen® Bond treated fibers are more comparable to the untreated virgin fiber, showcasing ProCutiGen® Bond’s ability to protect the hair fiber from the harsh chemical process and reducing overall damage to the fiber.

Within the relaxed images below significant less damage can be viewed on both the Untreated Virgin and the Relaxed Hair + ProCutiGen® Bond. Whereas the Relaxed Hair swatch is significantly more damaged i.e fluoresces greater. The ProCutiGen® Bond treated fiber is more comparable to the untreated fiber, showcasing its ability to protect the hair fiber from the harsh chemical process.

ProCutiGen® Bond consists of bivalent cationic peptides that create a de novo cuticle on the hair to prevent damage from happening in the first place. Significant results have been demonstrated by ProCutiGen® Bond’s proactive approach to chemical damage.
