PFD adalah penggambaran proses industri dalam bentuk diagram menggunakan simbol seperti garis, lingkaran, segiempat dsb untuk menggambarkan hubungan antara satu peralatan dengan peralatan lain dalam proses itu.

PFD menunjukkan hubungan antara komponen-komponen utama didalam sistem. PFD juga memberikan tabel harga disain proses untuk komponen-komponen yang beroperasi pada mode yang berbeda seperti, minimum, normal, dan maksimum

Piping and Instrumentation Diagram - P&ID, merupakan ilustrasi skematik dari hubungan fungsi antara piping, instrumentation dan system equipment components.

P&ID menunjukkan semua piping termasuk sequence physic dari sambungan, reducers, valves, equipment, instrumentation dan control interlocks. 

P&ID dipergunakan untuk mengoperasikan sistem proses.
