Clasificación“Performance Grade (PG)” del Cemento
Asfáltico(“Asphalt Binder”)
Definiciones
• Asphalt binder = Includes both modified and unmodified asphalt cements. Modifiers added to the asphalt cement are restricted to non-particulate organic modifiers with largest dimension no greater than 250 μm. (μ = 1/100,000th = 10¯6 )
• Asphalt cement = Dark brown to black cementitious material in which the predominant constituents are components that occur in nature or are obtained in petroleum processing. Restricted to materials that have been produced or supplied without modification.

Modificadores/ “Polymer-Modified Asphalt”“Types of modifiers
Modified asphalts are often generically called “polymer modified asphalts.” Polymers are probably the most common type of modification, but today’s modified asphalts may be produced in several ways. According to the Asphalt Institute’s “(MS-4) Asphalt Handbook”, modifiers and additives being used to boost performance include polymers, chemical modifiers, extenders, oxidants andantioxidants, hydrocarbons and anti-stripping additives.
• “Polymers” cover a broad range of modifiers, with elastomers (rubbers or elastics) and plastomers (plastics) being the most commonly used types. Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) are frequently used elastomers. Research conducted as part of the National Cooperative Highway Research Program found that SBS is the most often used modifier. These modifiers are used to reduce rutting and to improve fatigue and thermal cracking resistance.
• Crumb rubber is an elastomer made from ground tires. Several technologies are in place for using ground tire rubber. This material is used primarily to address rutting.
• Plastomers are used to improve the high temperature (rutting) properties of modified materials. Low density polyethylene (LDPE) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) are examples of plastomers used in asphalt modification.
• The most commonly used chemical modifier is polyphosphoric acid (PPA). This modifier may be used in combination with polymers to increase the high-temperature stiffness.
• Other modifiers that may be used include asphalt binder extenders (primarily sulfur) and hydrocarbon materials. Hydrocarbons can produce either hardening or softening effects. Materials can be added to increase rutting resistance. Softening agents orrejuvenators are used to lower the viscosity of aged asphalt binders in mixes containing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP).”

¿Cuál es el propósito de la Clasificación PG?
• Es una especificación para poder comprar el producto requerido, no una herramienta de predecir desempeño del pavimento.
• Esta especificación permite a la refinería o parte que modifique el cemento asfáltico el requerimiento sobre la necesidad del productodeseado por la agencia.
• Basado en una serie de pruebas a ciertas temperaturas permite enalguna medida realizar una representación lo más certera posible del comportamiento de los materiales.

Existen casos que pudiesen requerir grados de mayor rigidez en sudesempeño según su funcionalidad:
• Uno a dos grados para tráfico lento e intersecciones.
• Dos grados para tráfico detenido y muelles de carga.
• Simula la rigidez/endurecimiento del asfalto líquido durante sualmacenamiento, mezclado y depósito.
• Efecto de endurecimiento por oxidación.
• Para simular este efecto en el laboratorio se utiliza el “Rolling Thin-Film Oven (RTFO)”.

• Se coloca muestras de cemento asfáltico en unas botellas cilíndricas decristal y se colocan en un carrusel dentro de un horno especializado. Estecarrusel rota a 15 RPM por 85 minutos mientras esta a una temperatura de325°F (163°C) y un flujo de aire hacia las botellas a 244 pulgadas³/min (4000ml/min), lo cual se utiliza para simular el envejecimiento de la muestra.Estas muestras luego son almacenadas para utilizarse en pruebas depropiedades físicas o en el PAV.
