Problematic Social IssuesBy: Adam Kaiser, Colby Robinson & Christine LloydSocial Issues of Public InterestAbortionPrayer in schoolVoter Identification2nd Amendment vs. Gun controlProblematic societal issues come in many forms such as Abortion, being able to protect yourself and carry your own weapon, Showing our identification in order to vote, saying the pledge of allegiance or even praying in school. Every one of these may have valid pros and cons in every eye of every person. These decisions that people make are made from ones values, community and upbringing. And maybe even from a tragedy that happened in your life experience. The main focus that we are going to discuss is the right to carry your fire arm where ever and whenever you want.

22nd Amendment vs. Gun control Questions? Why is it necessary to carry firearms on an individual person? Why are people afraid of firearms?Should guns be in our schools? Will it help law enforcement with crime control? Will the media affect gun control?Do guns reduce violent crimes?

Self-defense is a fundamental right. The U.S. constitution, the constitutions of 44 states, common law, and the laws of all states recognize the right to use arms in self-defense. RTC laws respect the right to self-defense by allowing individuals to carry firearms for protection.

he unbalanced reporting is probably greatest in cases wherechildren die from accidental gunshots fired by another child. Most people have seen the public-service ads showing the voices or pictures of children between the ages of four and eight, never over the age of eight, and the impression is that there is an epidemic of accidental deaths involving small children. The exaggerated mediaattention given these particularly tragic deathsmakes these claims believable.

Pursuant tothe National Firearms Act of 1934 and the Gun Control Act of 1968, an American citizen (and certain legal alien, see later sections) may possess firearms and ammunition on his person, in his home, in his business, and in his vehicle during intrastate and interstate travel, except:a.Inside or on federal property, 930, exceptions exist. b.Inside anairliners cabin, 49 U.S.C. 46505.c. Before delivering a firearm or ammunition to acommon or contract carrier(e.g., bus, airline) for transportation in interstate or foreign commerce to a non-licensee the person must first notify the carrier in writing that the firearm or ammo is present, 922e.d.In or within 1,000 feet of aschool zone, 922 (q), exceptions exist.e.May not send concealable firearms through theU.S. mail, 1715, exceptions exist.f. May not make, receive, possess, transfer, deliver, import, or ship anundetectable firearm,922(p)g. May not make, possess, transfer, etc., certain firearms, such as:sawed-off shotguns, sawed-off rifles, machine guns, silencers, etc., (see Section E, below)unless they are registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Washington, D.C.h. May not import or export firearms without the federal government's permission, Section , numbers 9 - 11.

3Open carry of firearmsProtection from criminalsReduction of crimeLicensed law-abiding citizens

The question has been common throughout every state in America, is to try and ban the American citizen from being able to openly carry a fire arm for personal protection when the policeman is not able to protect you from a possible assault, home robbery, and rape or even from being murdered. Fire arm accidents and murders come from registered law abiding citizens and more often than not from illegal use from people that have stolen them or bought them unauthorized dealers

The first idea that comes to mind is that the more law abiding citizens that own and are trained on handling personal owned firearms will prevent thugs and criminals from committing a crime since they would not know who is willing to protect themselves and their families and not wait for someone to come to their rescue.

4Media vs. FirearmsGuns = WarGuns = More deathsGuns = Higher crimeGuns = Mass shootingsGuns = public distress

The second idea is that it instead of the media and politicians scare tactics with the common person into thinking that firearms are only for war. It could be taught like drivers education which in some cases it is when you go to the proper places. The more educated people are the safer people would be. More people die in auto accidents than by gun violence. Some U.S. schools have degraded to the point of that safety is an issue.

For example, Columbine High School and Virginia Tech are good examples of school shootings that is related to gun violence. We need to find deeper than what the medias portrayal of growing danger and violence in our schools. Lets find solutions to the problems.

5Guns and the LawOpen and Concealed CarryProper trainingRegristration

The law should have restrictions on who can carry and where. If you are consistently getting into trouble and breaking laws you may be placed on probation or have your right taken away. Not just because one man or woman is placed in political power.

Carrying firearms is just like driving a car as previously stated. You will not just let your kids get behind a wheel of a car but you will have them go to classes and have them trained under close professional supervision. When it comes to an argument of we have policemen and emergency buttons in parks and parking garages. That is a true statement but in order to react in a time now situation you are your safest protector for you and your family. By the time you hit the button on the emergency pole the crime is about to happen or had already happened. You may not have time to wait the 10 to 15 min for help. 6Guns and our schools

Code BlueDrive by Shooting DrillsArmed Teachers?Zero Tolerance PolicyTo offer a secure learning environment to our schools. Some schools even implement traditional fire drill such as drive-by shooting drills or Code Blue. Also, schools administrators and staff can expel students who refuse zero tolerance policy for guns or other weapons on school property. To offer a better standard for teachers and students, we need quality teachers.

Today, the occurrence of cliques in schools is extremely common. There are certainly good reasons to form tight-knit groups, but these cliques can also cause problems. Cliques such as gangs, racist groups, cults, or the recently publicized "Trench Coat Mafia" are also available to students who feel alone because they do not fit in. Social pressures in schools are sometimes overwhelming and it is only becoming more difficult to be a teenager in today's society. Statistics show that kids today are much more likely to feel alone or isolated.

People are becoming aware that the issue guns in schools is a problem. In addition, teenagers are under an unimaginable amount of social pressure in schools today, and it is only becoming more difficult to become an adult in today's society. Unfortunately it is impossible to eliminate these social pressures put on teenagers.7Argument #2: Is the world safer without guns?Less violent crimes?Reduction in accidental deathsZero school shootingsReduction in gang violence

From the year 2000 to 2010, there were 165,068 homicides. 111,289 were caused by firearms. Knives came in second at 20,503 deaths. More than 90,000 in difference. The United States, with 88.8 guns per 100 people, had a gun-death rate of 10.2 per 100,000 people. At the other extreme, Japan, with less than one gun (0.6, in fact) for every 100 people, has a gun-death rate of 0.06 per 100,000, and the Netherlands, with 3.9 guns per 100 people, has a gun-death rate of 0.46 per 100,000 people.

8Guns or No Guns? Fact or Fiction?Guns kill peopleGuns = Self defenseAssault rifles = mass shootingsGuns create violence

30,000 people are killed with guns every year. 54% of these deaths are suicides. Numerous studies have shown that the presence or absence of a firearm does not change the overall suicide rate.

You are more likely to be injured or killed using a gun for self-defense.You are far more likely to survive a violent assault if you defend yourself with a gun. In episodes where a robbery victim was injured, the injury/defense rates are:Resisting with a gun 6%Did nothing at all 25%Resisted with a knife 40%Non-violent resistance 45%

Even weapons misclassified as "assault weapons" (common in the former Federal and California "assault weapons" confiscations) are used in less than 1% of all homicides. Police reports show that assault weapons are a non-problem.

According to the latest available data, those who use guns in violent crimes rarely purchase them directly from licensed dealers; most guns used in crime have been stolen or transferred between individuals after the original purchase. Greater gun availability increases the rates of murder and felony gun use, but does not appear to affect general violence levels.

9ResolutionConstitutional Right to bear armsReduces crimeSafer homesSelf protection

Under the Uniform Crime Reporting System, violent crime consists of four categories of crime, each of which experienced decreases during the first half of 2013. Murders decreased 6.9 percent, rapes decreased 10.6 percent, robberies decreased 1.8 percent, and aggravated assaults decreased 6.6 percent. Of 30 cities of 500,000 or greater population, 20 reported decreases in murders, two reported no change in their numbers, and only eight reported increases.

Criminals will often flee the scene when they discover that their intended target has a gun. With no shots fired, no injuries, and no suspect in custody, news organizations may report nothing at all. Thus, it is important to remember that news reports can only provide us with an imperfect picture of defensive gun use in America. Second, when a citizen is able to shoot an attacker or hold a rapist or robber until the police arrive, it is very likely that more than one crime has been prevented because if the culprit had not been stopped, he could have targeted other citizens as well. The bottom line is that gun owners stop a lot of criminal mayhem every year.10ReferencesRuggiero, V. (2012). The Art of Thinking: A Guide to Critical and Creative Thought (10th ed.).
