THE DATA IS COMPELLING.Private school students perform better on standard-ized tests, go to college in higher numbers, and even-tually earn more than their public school peers.Underlying this success—and the true gift of a privateschool education, according to area administrators—is the personalized attention from faculty who imbuestudents with the knowledge, skills and confidenceneeded to succeed as learners and leaders.“Not only do we strive for academic excellence,
but we teach our students to be virtuous leaderswho recognize the many injustices in society and, through their personal witness, provide hope for abetter world and build respect among all people,”says Marco J. Clark, president and CED of BishopMcNamara High School in Forestville. These abilities and perspectives come with a price
tag. The average tuition for private day schools inMaryland was $22,283 for the 2010-11 school year, according to the National Association of IndependentSchools (NAIS). “It is an investment in your child’s
future,” says Esther VanDeCruze Donawa, head ofschool at Maryland International Day School, aSpanish immersion school, in Oxon Hill. For many, that future includes college.
According to the National Center for EducationStatistics (NCES), graduation rates of 12th gradersin private and public schools were 93.8 and 81.2percent, respectively, in 2006-07 (the most recentdata available) and four-year college attendancerates were 66.5 and 39.5 percent. Some area pri-vate schools—including The Beddow High Schoolin Accokeek and Bishop McNamara—report 100percent college attendance rates.
A generally more well-rounded education, combined with higher SAT scores, make privateschool students attractive to colleges, agree adminis-trators. NCES figures for the 2009-10 school yearshow students at private schools scored, on average,35-59 points higher on critical reading, 23-72 pointshigher on math and 42-72 points higher on writingthan those in public schools.
At Bishop McNamara, that not only meansevery student is college bound, but that most, including those from less affluent households, havenumerous post-secondary options. “Our class of2011, which had about 200 students, receivedoffers worth $18 million in scholarships and finan-cial aid,” says Patricia Garber, the school’s directorof admissions.
A private school education may translateinto a higher salary after college, according to a2006 report in the Journal of Economics andEconomic Education Research. “Attendants of pri-vate schools earn wages which are 4.9% higherthan wages of their public-school counterparts,”according to the study.“It is the individualized instruction that students
receive from teachers who get to know them wellthat gives our kids a sound base and makes themeager learners,” says Donawa. “Our teachers workwith them, play with them, interact with them andteach them.”

FLOURISH IN CLASS...AND BEYOND

What makes private school teachers so effective, according to Donawa, is that they are considered byparents and administrators “to be an important partof the package and not the least common denomina-tor. It’s not just students who develop relationshipswith teachers; our parents do, too. As a result, ourteachers feel appreciated.”At Bishop McNamara, where 55 percent of the
faculty has advanced degrees, “teachers are teachingkids who want to be here—that’s huge,” saysGarber. “And while we’re an accredited school witha strong reputation, our teachers have an academicfreedom….We have guidelines but there’s lots ofroom for creativity in the classroom.”
Private schools tend to have a more unifiededucational philosophy that is embraced by faculty, say administrators. And, that philosophy can extendbeyond academics. “In our Catholic Christian set-ting, students are imbued with values to serve thebetterment of mankind,” says Michael Hunt, BishopMcNamara’s principal. “The focus on academics isapproached with a purity of intent. Our teachers arenot teaching to a test; we want our students to lovethe knowledge being imparted.”“A productive academic life excites you and
urges you on to greater achievement,” says TrudyBeddow, founder and head of school at TheBeddow High School. “We provide

the proper environment and encourage participa-tion and engagement….which results in a studentwho is articulate and can analyze and synthesizeon his feet.”
Creating self-sufficient learners is apriority for private schools. “Our studentsdevelop an independence in the learningprocess,” says Donawa. “They learn how tostart the process and then use the teacher as afacilitator. They are curious, motivated andenjoy learning, which makes them valuable ina school community.”The ability of private schools to more
closely tailor the curriculum to individual stu-dents’ needs is another advantage, saysBeddow. “If we have students who are notever going to be science majors, we can beinnovative and offer courses that engage them, such as scientific illustration or forensicsrather than physics and chemistry,” she says.“The beauty of a place like McNamara is the
fact that you can be an honors student in mathand a college prep student in English and receivehigh-quality instruction in both that will chal-lenge you,” says Garber. “We recognizestrengths and accelerate students along thepaths where they are strongest while still pro-viding help in areas that need more attention.”
Increased attention also reduces discipli-nary problems, say administrators. “We’vehad kids come in with disciplinary problemsbut they don’t repeat [behaviors] here. Wedon’t community-build as a stated objective, but with a small group of students it’s auto-matic,” says Beddow.“It is a privilege to be here,” says Garber of
Bishop McNamara. “It’s not as though youpay money and can do whatever you want. That said, should there be discipline issues, wefirst work with families to resolve them.”
Despite the reputation of some presti-gious private schools as being homogenous, most independent schools embrace diversity, say administrators. “Bishop McNamara is adiverse school with a wide range of students—racially, culturally and religiously,” says JadaScott, a senior at the school.“We are a microcosm of the world out-
side,” says Donawa of Maryland Internation-al Day School. “Our teachers are from ninedifferent parts of the globe. While most stu-dents are born in the U.S., their parents mayhave come from other countries. Our studentsare culturally aware.” And that, she adds, willserve them well “in our increasingly globalsociety.”
