The new COVID-19 Omicronvariant is more transmissible thanthe Delta variant. However, its

biological characteristics are still rela-tively unknown. The study about thisvariant has been published in the 'Na-ture Journal'. In South Africa, the Omi-cron variant replaced the other viruseswithin a few weeks and led to a sharpincrease in the number of cases diag-nosed. Analyses in various countries in-dicate that the doubling time for casesis approximately 2 to 4 days. Omicronhas been detected in dozens of coun-tries, including France, and becamedominant by the end of 2021.

In a new study supported by theEuropean Union's Health EmergencyPreparedness and Response Authority

(HERA), scientists from the InstitutPasteur and the Vaccine Research Insti-tute, in collaboration with KU Leuven(Leuven, Belgium), Orleans RegionalHospital, Hopital Europeen Georges

Pompidou (AP-HP) and Inserm, stud-ied the sensitivity of Omicron to anti-bodies compared with the currentlydominant Delta variant.

The aim of the study was to charac-terize the efficacy of therapeutic anti-bodies, as well as antibodies developedby individuals previously infected withSARS-CoV-2 or vaccinated, in neutral-izing this new variant. The scientistsfrom KU Leuven isolated the Omicronvariant of SARS-CoV-2 from a nasalsample of a 32-year-old woman whodeveloped moderate COVID-19 a fewdays after returning from Egypt. Theisolated virus was immediately sent toscientists at the Institut Pasteur, wheretherapeutic monoclonal antibodies andserum samples from people who had

been vaccinated or previously exposedto SARS-CoV-2 were used to study thesensitivity of the Omicron variant.

The scientists used rapid neutral-ization assays, developed by the Insti-tut Pasteur's Virus and Immunity Unit,on the isolated sample of the Omicronvirus. This collaborative multidiscipli-nary effort also involved the InstitutPasteur's virologists and specialists inthe analysis of viral evolution and pro-tein structure, together with teams fromOrleans Regional Hospital and HopitalEuropeen Georges Pompidou in Paris.

The scientists began by testing ninemonoclonal antibodies used in clinicalpractice or currently in preclinical de-velopment. Six antibodies lost all an-tiviral activity, and the other three were

3 to 80 times less effective againstOmicron than against Delta. The anti-bodies Bamlanivimab/Etesevimab (acombination developed by Lilly),Casirivimab/Imdevimab (a combina-tion developed by Roche and known asRonapreve), and Regdanvimab (devel-oped by Celtrion) no longer had any an-tiviral effect against Omicron.

The Tixagevimab/Cilgavimabcombination (developed by As-traZeneca under the name Evusheld)was 80 times less effective againstOmicron than against Delta. "Wedemonstrated that this highly transmis-sible variant has acquired significantresistance to antibodies. Most of thetherapeutic monoclonal antibodies cur-rently available against SARS-CoV-2

are inactive," commented OlivierSchwartz, co-last author of the studyand Head of the Virus and ImmunityUnit at the Institut Pasteur.

The scientists observed that theblood of patients previously infectedwith COVID-19, collected up to 12months after symptoms, and that of in-dividuals who had received two dosesof the vaccine, taken five months aftervaccination, barely neutralized theOmicron variant. But the sera of indi-viduals who had received a boosterdose of Pfizer, analyzed one month af-ter vaccination, remained effectiveagainst Omicron. Five to 31 times moreantibodies were nevertheless requiredto neutralize Omicron, compared withDelta, in cell culture assays.

Global wish listDystopia-dependent depression is too easy a

mode in which to start a new year. Perhaps weshould attempt to do the far more difficult,

counter-intuitive thing by reaching instead for madoptimism — given the sheer, mind-shuttering direnessof the multiple lunacies currently engulfing us, wemight as well deploy the counter-craziness of vividlyprojecting scenarios that go well beyond the logical,‘best-case’ models.

So, 2022 will be the year in which we will finallysee the petering out of Sars-Covid-19. Given that Cal-cutta and West Bengal have been nationally behindthe curve on most variants but are well ahead on Omi-cron, the post-Corona sun will rise first on our SonarBengal and Rupashi Kolkata. Even as the rest of thecountry is still reeling from the last tail-lashes of themonster, we will be the first state in the country to re-gain whatever counts for normalcy. This will providea much-needed boost to our economy and to the gen-eral happiness-quotient of all of us residing in the lapof Mama Bangla.

Our state government and ruling party, chastenedby their electoral misadventures in far corners of thecountry where they have no business, will return theirattention to the betterment of our state with renewedvigour. Made consultative, collegiate and sagacious inthe triple forge of the pandemic, the cyclones and thehorrendous state election battles, our leaders will havelearnt many lessons. In close collaboration with sci-entists, researchers and thinkers, the state governmentwill shift from yo-yoing top-down populist whimsy toputting into practice much-needed reforms. The cleanair periods of the last two years will be rememberedand curbs on vehicles and industrial pollution will aimfor and attain ‘Lockdown Level’ air-quality. Thewhole idea of ‘growth’ will be turned on its head. In-stead of bloating the GDP on the backs of the wealthof a very few, we will start working towards decreas-ing inequality and increasing the quality of life for themajority of the state’s inhabitants.

This, in turn, will rapidly make us the envy of therest of India, nay the subcontinent. From Quetta toKohima, they will speak of the Bengal Model withawe and emulatory avariciousness. In copycat legisla-tion, private car traffic will be chopped down acrossthe country, factories will find it increasingly difficultto pollute water-bodies with impunity, other concep-tual and actually-executed ideas — gifts given by WB— will be received by many authorities and peopleswith gratitude.

In 1st, US surgeons transplantpig heart into human patient

In a medical first, doctors transplanteda pig heart into a patient in a last-ditcheffort to save his life and a Maryland

hospital said Monday that he's doing wellthree days after the highly experimentalsurgery.

While it's too soon to know if the op-eration really will work, it marks a step inthe decades-long quest to one day use an-imal organs for life-saving transplants.Doctors at the University of MarylandMedical Center say the transplant showedthat a heart from a genetically modifiedanimal can function in the human bodywithout immediate rejection.

The patient, David Bennett, a 57-year-old Maryland handyman, knew therewas no guarantee the experiment wouldwork but he was dying, ineligible for ahuman heart transplant and had no otheroption, his son told The Associated Press.

It was either die or do this transplant.I want to live. I know it's a shot in thedark, but it's my last choice, Bennett saida day before the surgery, according to astatement provided by the University ofMaryland School of Medicine.

On Monday, Bennett was breathingon his own while still connected to aheart-lung machine to help his new heart. The next few weeks will be critical asBennett recovers from the surgery anddoctors carefully monitor how his heart isfaring. There's a huge shortage of humanorgans donated for transplant, driving sci-entists to try to figure out how to use ani-mal organs instead.

Last year, there were just over 3,800heart transplants in the U.S., a recordnumber, according to the United Networkfor Organ Sharing, which oversees the na-tion's transplant system. "If this works, there will be an endless supply of theseorgans for patients who are suffering, saidDr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, scientific di-rector of the Maryland university's ani-mal-to-human transplant program. Butprior attempts at such transplants or xeno-

transplantation have failed, largely be-cause patients' bodies rapidly rejected theanimal organ. Notably, in 1984, BabyFae, a dying infant, lived 21 days with ababoon heart.

The difference this time: The Mary-land surgeons used a heart from a pig thathad undergone gene-editing to remove asugar in its cells that's responsible for thathyper-fast organ rejection. Severalbiotech companies are developing pig or-gans for human transplant; the one usedfor Friday's operation came from Revivi-cor, a subsidiary of United Therapeutics.

I think you can characterize it as a wa-tershed event, Dr. David Klassen, UNOS'chief medical officer, said of the Mary-land transplant. Still, Klassen cautioned

that it's only a first tentative step into ex-ploring whether this time around, xeno-transplantation might finally work.

The Food and Drug Administration, which oversees such experiments, al-lowed the surgery under what's called acompassionate use emergency authoriza-tion, available when a patient with a life-threatening condition has no other op-tions.

It will be crucial to share the datagathered from this transplant before ex-tending it to more patients, said KarenMaschke, a research scholar at the Hast-ings Center, who is helping develop ethicsand policy recommendations for the firstclinical trials under a grant from the Na-tional Institutes of Health. Rushing into

animal-to-human transplants without thisinformation would not be advisable,Maschke said.

Over the years, scientists have turnedfrom primates to pigs, tinkering with theirgenes. Just last September, researchers inNew York performed an experiment sug-gesting these kinds of pigs might offerpromise for animal-to-human transplants.Doctors temporarily attached a pig's kid-ney to a deceased human body andwatched it begin to work.

The Maryland transplant takes theirexperiment to the next level, said Dr.Robert Montgomery, who led that work atNYU Langone Health. This is a truly re-markable breakthrough," he said in astatement. "As a heart transplant recipi-ent, myself with a genetic heart disorder,I am thrilled by this news and the hope itgives to my family and other patients whowill eventually be saved by this break-through.

The surgery last Friday took sevenhours at the Baltimore hospital. Dr. Bart-ley Griffith, who performed the surgery, said the patient's condition heart failureand an irregular heartbeat made him inel-igible for a human heart transplant or aheart pump.

Griffith had transplanted pig heartsinto about 50 baboons over five years, be-fore offering the option to Bennett. We'relearning a lot every day with this gentle-man, Griffith said. And so far, we're hap-py with our decision to move forward. And he is as well: Big smile on his facetoday.

Pig heart valves also have been usedsuccessfully for decades in humans, andBennett's son said his father had receivedone about a decade ago. As for the hearttransplant, He realizes the magnitude ofwhat was done and he really realizes theimportance of it, David Bennett Jr. said.He could not live, or he could last a day,or he could last a couple of days. I mean,we're in the unknown at this point.

Study finds COVID-19 Omicron variantneutralized by booster dose

Parent's genes can influence achild's educational success

According to newresearch by theUniversity Col-

lege London, a child'seducational success de-pends on the genes ofhis parents that havebeen inherited as well asnot been inherited.

The study has beenpublished in 'The Amer-ican Journal of HumanGenetics'. Funded by theNuffield Foundation, the study confirmed thatgenes a person inheritsdirectly are most likelyto contribute to theirachievements in educa-tion. But parent genesthat aren't directly inher-ited, yet have stillshaped parents' own ed-ucation levels and sub-sequently influenced thelifestyle and family en-vironment they providefor their children, arealso important and canaffect how well a persondoes at school and be-yond. Children resemble

their parents because ofnature (the genes theyinherit) and nurture (theenvironment they growup in).

But nature and nur-ture effects are inter-twined. Mothers and fa-thers each pass on halfof their genes to theirchildren, and althoughthe other half of theirgenes are not passed on,they continue to influ-ence the parents' traitsand ultimately influencethe traits in their chil-dren. For example, par-

ents with a higher genet-ic propensity for learn-ing may have a greaterinterest in activities suchas reading that, in turn, nurture learning in theiroffspring.

This concept --when parents' genes in-fluence outcomes fortheir offspring by shap-ing the environment thatthey provide for them --is called genetic nurture. It describes how parents'genes indirectly theirchildren's characteris-tics.

On behalf of the Union,a memorandum was handed over to TehsildarRadaur Suresh Kumar in the name of thePresident and the Governor in which variousdemands of farmers were listed.

In the memorandum, the government wasurged to give the right price of crops. Farmersare not getting the right price for their pro-duce. Due to which they are becoming poorand indebted. The government is importing palm oil. Its import should bebanned. Because palm oil is not good forhealth. Oilseed farmers in the country are suf-fering huge losses.

On the other hand, 15-year old tractorsshould be excluded from the law in which 15-year old diesel vehicles are banned from ply-ing. This should be increased to 25 years. Be-cause in 15 years, the farmers are in only ableto free themselves from loan raised for thetractor.

He said that the state government has

been made aware many times regarding theproblem of manure, problem related to elec-tricity as well as other problems of the farm-ers of the state. But the government is not se-rious about it.

As a result, the situation of the farmer hasbecome worse. Farmers are not getting fairprice of crops, due to which the economiccondition of the farmers is getting weaker. Onthe other hand, there are local issues doggingthe farmers like shortage of urea, need to pro-tect the crop from wild animals. Demands forproviding new electricity connections as soonas possible and construction of underpasseson NH 344 etc. have also been made.

He lamented that the political partieshave used the farmers only as a vote bank. Nopolitical party has solved their problems.
