AUGUST 2 – 8, 2013 Travel B2 The mesmorizing Gangwon Province has no shortage of either tourist attractions or beautiful sceneries, so no matter whether you prefer a vacation full of activities, or would rather simply enjoy the tranquil beauty of nature, it is a suitable place to go for all. The Nami Island of Winter Sonata Fame Nami Island, also known as Namiseom, turned into a star tourist attrac- tion after the Korean drama Winter Sonata filmed many of its romance scenes on the island. But apart from the glamour of the show, the island itself is a natural beauty worth a visit. A walk along the island’s many foot paths is often accompanied by the gentle shadows of the swaying groves of trees that line them. Riding a bicycle along these foot paths, stopping by to take photos with ostriches, or simply relaxing on the grass fields and watching squirrels skittle around, are all equally relaxing ways of easing your mind and letting yourself sink into nature’s embrace. Located 63km east of Seoul, Nami Island is a small island that lies in the middle of the Han River, one of South Korea’s major rivers. The island is named after General Nami of the Joseon Dynasty, who was killed after being falsely accused of treason and supposedly buried there. The island is covered with over 20,000 trees, most of which line the many foot paths that crisscross the island. These include groves of pine and ginkgo, as well as the Metasequoia trees of Winter Sonata fame. Tired of walking? You can ride the UNICEF miniature train or rent a tandem bicycle with a partner to get around the island. There are also many well-planned theme parks and exhibitions scattered throughout the island, and are definitely not to be missed. One of these is the children’s library–a collection of over 20,000 chil- dren’s picture books from countries all over the world. The library has a 5.5m high “Picture Book Wall”, which comprises of a large grid of over 500 cubbyholes, with a book placed in each one. The wall is a beautiful sight to behold when seen from a distance, and is the result of the librar- ians’ efforts to let the children immerse themselves in a sea of colourful picture books. Apart from the library, there are also various stalls that sell handicrafts made from trash left behind by past visitors to the island. These are made by artists hoping to raise environmental awareness among visitors. Gangwondo Alpensia, Venue of the 2018 Winter Olympics If you are a fan of skiing, a visit to the Alpensia ski resort is a must. Just a 2-hour drive away from Seoul, its ideal location means that it is also just 30 minutes away from the beautiful Eastern Sea, and an hour’s drive away from two of Korea’s most famous mountains, Seoraksan and Odaesan. Alpensia is situated along the mountain pass of Daegwallyeong, and is 700m above sea level. This is the altitude at which the high and low pres- sures meet, creating a phenomenon that is said to cause the human body to produce hormones that promote blood circulation and cure fatigue. The reporters of this article arrived at the resort fatigued from their prior long journeys, but felt completely refreshed and energised after just one night’s rest at the ski resort. Alpensia will host some of the events of the 2018 winter Olympics, including the ski jumping, bobsleigh, luge, and cross-country skiing events. Alpensia’s towering international-standard ski jumping stadium is a must-see as well, and with some luck, you may be able to spot Korean Olympic ski jumpers practicing there for the 2018 games. As the main venue of the winter Olympics, the resort is well equipped with sports and entertainment facilities, including a five-star hotel, a musical hall, a casino, and a skiing slope, where the whole family can enjoy themselves together. The snowy slopes are not only great for skiing, but also offer beautiful views of the towering mountain pass. The resort also boasts a large water theme park, the Ocean 700, with a maximum capacity of 2500 people. The water park’s indoor facilities include a wave pool, a lazy river, a children’s pool, and spa and massage services. Its outdoor facilities include more pools and several megaslides. Shopping fanatics can also find branded goods from all over the world along the Alpensia’s shopping street, and enjoy festival celebrations that change with the seasons.
