As a designer, my inspiration stems from a deep appreciation for form. Recognizing and building complexity in seemingly simple relationships is central to the field of design. Although this discipline is about making things as visually interesting as possible, I take ideas conceptually beyond that goal. I work diligently to frame the problem to provide my client with a solution that is as visually inspiring as possible. After all, graphic design is perhaps the most rewarding problem solving process.

1.1Provocarteur Provocarteur is a monthly publication about art and activism. The concept for this project was inspired by the political graphics in Milton Glaser’s Design of Dissent. As playwright Tony Kushner mentioned in the book, “so sophisticated is our understanding of how little we understand and how vaguely we understand, that a toxic cynicism pervades our spirit, shutting down our capacity for faith, for hope, for imagining change— and consequently shutting down our passion and our imagination.” But the truth is, graphic design has an undeniable restorative power. As Kushner says, .“great designs, that employ shock, wit, and clarity borne of urgency, can move people to action, acts of courage and sacrifice, overcoming habit and fear.”

”When one pushes for change, (socially, politically, or environmentally), by utilizing their creative ability to communicate in ways of their artistic activity, that is known as Artivism.” —Frank Berganza

Provocarteur will feature articles covering issues ranging from equality, the media, the corporate world, to the government. With this in mind, public service announcements and various types of art will stand in place of the typical advertisements found in other publications

1.2Audi Annual Report

This annual report was produced for Audi, an automobile manufacturer based in Germany. Layouts from the book itself were designed in collaboration with my colleague Matthew Chu. As a team, we succeeded in displaying the contents of the annual report in a structured manner while maintaining visual interest through dynamic infographics. As an additional touch, we crafted a slipcase for the book using black suede and leather.

Women in the World Foundation The Women in the World Foundation is a powerful, new initiative dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges faced by women and girls all over the world. The group strives to address women’s issues in education, economic opportunity, and leadership, among others. The case features a die cut of their logo and each section begins with a vellum sheet featuring the same die cut. This promotional booklet was designed for the foundation’s upcoming launch to encourage people to take action on women’s issues by spreading the word, encouraging donations, and getting involved with the group’s affiliate organizations.

2.1Axel Premium Wines Viña La Playa is a world-renowned winery located in Chile’s Colchagua Valley. Since La Playa is the primary distributor of Chile’s signature grape, Carmenère, this project began with creating a new wine label for their signature product. The company’s primary goal for this project was to develop a new design scheme that would appeal to a younger market, more specifically the 21– 26 age bracket. However, as time progressed, this project has expanded to redesigning the labels for Axel, La Playa’s premium line. Manipulating the form of the letter “X” and doing a die cut creates a visually interesting element that works by complementing the clean and minimalistic design of the labels.

Phantogram is an American electronic rock duo from Saratoga Springs, New York, consisting of guitarist Josh Carter and keyboardist Sarah Barthel. Their music is often characterized by electronic loops and airy vocals. They draw inspiration from both their natural surroundings and metropolitan influences to create beat driven, dream-like songs. In order to mimic the melding of such various influences, I made use of layered transparencies in the designs for the band’s latest marketing collateral.

Swell is a French-Japanese Fusion Bistro located in downtown San Francisco. The menu’s minimalist typography and geometric patterns reflect the restaurant’s modern atmosphere. In order to come up with a sustainable design for the menu case, I used recycled Medium Density Fiber boards for its construction. The logo and pattern are both laser etched onto the board’s surface. The food containers were also laser etched to allow the paper’s natural fibers to show through, mirroring the same geometric pattern on the restaurant’s menu and coasters.

5.1Motion Interactive Game Motion is an interactive game that draws inspiration from both the traditional board game format and modern video game platforms. By making use of innovative technology while maintaining the element of “interaction” that traditional board games offer, my colleague, Nonette Llabres and I were able to come up with a fully functional prototype that sets our project apart from any other game in the market. The game board and tokens were created by laser cutting and layering sheets of colored acrylic.
