FORWARD Here it is! The second ever edition of A Commarts Collective, a zine made by communication arts students at VCU for, well, EVERYONE! We have a ton of talent this year and I can’t help but think that it is at least partially because of all the inspiration one could draw from the beautiful city of Richmond, Virginia. There are muses around every corner here from river rat to the finally finished VCU library to crust punks. The abundance of inspiration has made Richmond inhabitants particularly in touch with their hipster sensibilities. We are, after all, the new Portland (just don’t let anyone dare hear you say that out loud). We seriously could have a Portlandia spin off, I mean, the dream of the 90s is alive in Richmond! Don’t believe me? Just consider the fact that you are holding a zine right now… point made.

Nothing against Richmonders; the people here are passionate about their craft beers, GWAR, feminism, Bernie Sanders, local coffee, single gear bikes, #BLM, veganism, house shows, handmade patches on denim jackets, Steven Universe, and PBR. That’s great! This is zine that celebrates all you passionate people so leaf through and appreciate all the awesome art our gracious contributors submitted this year. Hope you enjoy, see you next year!

INDIA MAYES“To create artwork is a very cerebral experience for me, and yet I’ve found that it pays to let yourself not take it too seriously. Not all of the time. I enjoy weaving between beautiful and grotesque.” You can see more of India at: ai-em-maes.tumblr.com

NOT YOUR EVERYDAY HIPSTER TRASH

A Comm Arts Collective is an independent publication by Comm Arts Students at VCU for the world. From our headquarters at Franklin Terrace (or “Franky Terry”, our affectionate nickname) we commarts students work day and night to produce images that have something to say. I hope you’re ready to listen.

This zine is all about showcaseing the amazing, diverse range of work that Comm Arts students create. Inside, you will find sketches, studies, and experimental work, as well as more developed pieces, covering the ground of scientific illustration, imagery for children, editorial illustration, concept work and more. So go ahead and flip through!
