Year 7 had a fun and productive day at Canterbury Girls HS last Friday. The aim of the day was to work on leadership and social skills while talking about social inclusion. This is the first of a range of joint wellbeing and curriculum projects that we will be doing with Canterbury Girls this year in each of the year groups. The program was so successful last year that both schools wanted to expand the cooperation in 2017. Cycling Champion Congratulations to Lawrence Santos of Year 9 who won a 70km race in the Hunter region last weekend. Lawrence competes at the national level and will be competing in Bathurst this week.

YEAR 8 DISCOVER AREA
As part of the unit 8P measured the classroom G5 collaboratively and worked out the area of the walls and floor space. They then calculated how much it would cost to paint the classroom and put in new carpets.

The Preliminary Chemistry students were busy observing displacement reactions of metals this
week. The photo below is taken through a dissecting microscope and reveals the end of an iron
nail coated with copper that has been displaced from a solution of copper sulphate. Simply
placing the iron nail in the copper sulphate will cause this reaction to occur. Although this
process is rarely used to coat objects with copper, it is similar to the process that is used to coat
objects with tin.

YEAR 7 CANTERBURY GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL EXCURSION
On 22nd March 2017, our Year 7 group visited Canterbury Girls High School. When we arrived at
Canterbury Girls High School our Year 7 boys were assigned a group for the day. In the group
there was a mixture of both boys and girls. In our groups we participated in different activities.
One of the activities I enjoyed the most was the treasure hunt. The reason being we got to
explore the Canterbury Girls High School environment. After we finished our activities the
Canterbury Girls staff produced a beautiful lunch for the boys to enjoy. At the conclusion of the
day we boarded the bus and headed home.

7 HOLLOWS – SEPARATING MIXTURES IN SCIENCE
In Science, 7 Hollows has been exploring mixtures. In particular, students have been investigating what components make up the mixtures found in their everyday lives and how to separate these. Some of the separation techniques the students have learnt about are filtration and evaporation. As shown in the images, the students have performed experiments to investigate how these techniques can be used to separate a mixture of sand and copper sulfate.

NSW SCHOOLS VACCINATION PROGRAM-ROUND 1 FRIDAY 7TH APRIL 2017
A reminder to parents regarding the Vaccinations Program
Year 7 students will be having the first vaccination on Friday 7th April 2017 during Periods 1 and 3.
Representatives from the NSW School Vaccination Program will attend Ashfield Boys High School from 8.30-11am. I have included a link (see below) to the NSW Department of Health, which provides information regarding the school vaccination program in 26 languages and may be of assistance.
Our best football team has played two competitive games back to back. On Tuesday, we played against Davidson HS in Sydney North knockout competition at Melwood Oval, Forestville. Nervousness was our biggest enemy for the first 10 to 15 minutes. Desire to score a goal led to uncharacteristic mistakes. Once our midfield players "stepped on the ball", started to play wide and into the open space, multiple opportunities to score were created. Bowen Foreman (twice), Caleb Anheluk (once) and Youjin Shrestha scored goals. Our commanding goal keeper Alessio Serdoz ensured our net stayed untouched at the conclusion of the first half. Despite having no substitute players, we started the second half playing attacking style of football. Then the best goal of the game was scored; Eren Durust demonstrated not just sheer power but also accuracy scoring a 25 metres stunner, clearing the web-net from the top left hand side corner. Then the unexpected happened, Youjin Shrestha experienced muscle cramps and despite the medical treatment from his coach was unable to continue. With one player down we still created multiple chances to score. With two minutes to go, after missing yet another chance to score, the punishment
arrived and we conceded a goal. Our goalkeeper, Alessio Serdoz tried to prevent Davidson's striker from overrunning him. He bravely dived for the ball and unfortunately jarred his finger. Once the game was finished and he took his gloves off he realised his little finger was dislocated. The unfortunate end to such a great team performance. We all wish Alessio speedy recovery. Only 24 hours later the same players played in our Zone's Round 1 match against North Sydney. The hot and sunny day prevented our players from reproducing the same high quality performance. Despite being obviously fatigued half way through the second half, a desire to score and play attacking football was evident. Caelan Hinckson (twice) and Eray Damar (once) ensured the winning momentum is carried into the next round. Before this game was played, our Third grade team also left the field as the winning side, coming from behind and beating the same opponent 3 goals to 2. The stand out player was John Rivera Bayer who scored two goals.
