The Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend turned into an even longer weekend and has made for a short school week. Yesterday we spent some time looking through some of our school performance data for the past three years. The discussions were fruitful and what has become clear to all the staff is that there are many successes to celebrate. In addition to our academic successes, the data also shows our commitment to developing the whole child and one clear point of impact has been through our Social and Emotional Learning Program (SEL).

The research on school attendance highlights how important regular attendance is. Children

with positive attendance habits have consistently been found to have:

higher academic achievement including literacy and numeracy

longer school retention

increasing opportunities for students to learn and access educational resources, further supporting achievement

decreased absenteeism in higher year levels

Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of

the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. Fortunately, we have an incredible amount of students who will shortly be receiving certificates for having perfect attendance this semester (in fact too many for us to even call out at assembly!). This is great news for us as a school and a habit we are hoping will continue! Student Led Conference times are due to go home shortly. These are booked in for Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th June. To ensure you make the best use of your student led conference, before your appointment, discuss your child’s self evaluation and written report with him or her. Whilst conference time will provide a formal opportunity for you and the teacher to recognise your child’s achievements, the main focus is the future. The participants are you, your child and the teacher. To minimise distractions, we request that siblings wait outside the classroom. Teachers will have a tight schedule. Therefore, in the interests of everyone, please keep to your allocated time. If you are unable to keep your appointment, please ring your child’s teacher or the school. Judy is currently on leave and Meg has very dutifully stepped in as Acting Assistant Principal. I’m very grateful to Meg for taking on this role at short notice and getting her head around the specific skill of daily organisation – never an easy job! While on the subject of staffing, I wanted to let you all know that I did not apply for the principal position here at Brunswick South-West. Even though I know the whole process is still confidential and highly sensitive, I wanted to let the school community know. It’s been a tricky (and long) thought process in getting to this point and there is nothing else behind my decision, except the desire to finish some of the work I have already started back at Brunswick South. I will do whatever I can to support the transition of leadership and I hope that the principal selection process helps to find the absolute best candidate for the school. The principal at Brunswick North-West recently announced his resignation and in his message to the community he made the following comment: The momentum of the school culture

and the atmosphere are far greater than any one person. I know that the trajectory of warm community, respectful relationships and love of learning and life will continue to evolve over the time of change ahead. I know this will be the case here. The priorities of the school and the culture is embedded and exceptionally positive. I stole his words, because I couldn’t say it better myself! I’m very grateful for the support I’ve had this term, thank you to you all. Trevor Strolla Acting Principal

JUNIOR SCHOOL PERFORMANCES

Friday 23rd June 9:00 Bec/Lucy & Damien

Dear Families, Alison, Caroline/Kelly and Lizzy’s classes are working together on a water saving project and we would love any old pieces of plywood that you may be willing to donate. Also, if there are any parents who have the skill and tools to cut plywood, please come and see Caroline in Room 20, or send through an email. We hope to have our project complete by the last week of term, so if you can help out before then that’s be great! Caroline Wignell
