‘Share the Love’ Food Drive 2011
donations from pupils and sponsorship from corporate organisations. The Destination Imagination (DI) team put up a series of five-minute publicity performance (song, skit, news broadcast) every morning during the week of the food drive to encourage pupils to donate generously. The decoration committee members decorated the Food Drop area with banners, posters and lots of ‘heart’ cut-outs to create awareness of the event. We also roped in the help of other pupils, spending many hours sorting out and packing the food donations.
On the day of the Food Drop, we went from door to door to distribute the food packs. We had also managed to conduct a short interview with the residents to obtain some household demographic information as well as to gain a better understanding of their needs.
Through this project, we have learnt more of ourselves through the planning of this project and more so about the elderly and the situation of the less privileged residents in our community. We have also learnt to appreciate the good life that we enjoy today. It was indeed a great experience. On this note, we would like to thank the whole school once again for the generous donations and support that had made this project a success.

In September this year, pupils from the P5 TAG classes had launched a food donation drive – “Share the Love”. It gave the pupils the opportunity to contribute to
and be involved in our community.
The Food Drop was a collaboration between Nan Hua Primary School and South West CDC’s joint programme, “Adopt a Rented Block” (AARB). AARB is an initiative to engage the community and corporate stakeholders
in uplifting the lives of vulnerable elderly residing at the rental blocks in South West District. It is an effort to encourage the inter-mingling between the old and young, the rich and poor so that the stronger individuals in the community are able to help the less privileged members of the society. The Food Drop turned out to be a success with overwhelming donations from our generous pupils, parents and corporate sponsors.
It was indeed rewarding for us the P5 TAG pupils, who had put in much effort and many hours of hard work. The leaders of the committee worked out the logistics of the Food Drop. They drafted letters to canvass for food

The Community Involvement Programme (CIP) plays an important role in shaping the character and values of pupils in Nan Hua. This year, in conjunction with Racial Harmony Day, we collaborated with Yayasan Mendaki to organise three Mini-Math Festivals, which were held in classrooms of various mosques for groups of children aged 5 to 9.
Our aim was to provide a fun and interesting learning experience for the P4 TAG pupils. We hoped to help them apply mathematics skills outside the school environment and experience real-life mathematics around them. Through such interactive learning methods, we also hoped our pupils would help spread the love of Mathematics to other children.
I find it a rare opportunity to be able to organise such a fun activity for CIP. It was not only fun for the kids, but also fun for us. Through this experience, I have learnt four things.
Firstly, I have learnt to be more patient. Some children needed more time to understand the instructions given. We must tolerate them and give them a chance to try things out. Failure is often a stepping stone towards success. We must let the kids try and tell them what their mistakes are. They will then learn from their mistakes and try again.
Secondly, I have learnt to be considerate towards others. It was the month of Ramadhan and the Muslim people were fasting. During our break, we ate discreetly in a corner as a form of respect.
Thirdly, I have learnt that we must be gentle to the younger children. A big smile and a little wave can act as a big magnet at times and attract them to you. The children would become scared if you were as fierce as a lion. We must treat them the way we want to be treated and must not roar at them even if they have angered us or done something wrongly.
Finally, I have learnt to be adaptable to my surroundings. The games for the various stations had to be adjusted to the ability of the children who had participated. We had to make the games more challenging for the older children yet simple enough to encourage the younger ones to join in. I would like to thank Mendaki and all the teachers involved for helping us in completing this project. It was truly an enjoyable experience.

Thinking Week 2011Thinking Week 2011
On the first week of Term 3 2011, Nan Hua Primary School organised its second ever Thinking Week. Thinking Week is a week filled with fun activities to develop Nan Hua pupils’ thinking skills and a wide array of activities was covered to allow pupils to develop all aspects of their thinking. These activities are planned at the class level and at the school level.
Quizzes and Nano Thinking Lessons Thinking Games
One of the approaches used towards developing thinking in Nan Hua is through the use of games. A wide line-up of games designed to stimulate thinking was introduced to the pupils. The teacher in charge of the games programme, Mr Lim Teck Huat, explained that he believed the teaching and learning of thinking skills can be fun. He also noted that the use of thinking games is effective in teaching pupils important concepts of thinking as it incorporates the learning into an interactive activity. The games were very well-received by pupils and teachers alike. Mrs Shirley Wee, who was supervising her class during the thinking games, felt that pupils could learn new things from the games they played.
Special quizzes by subject teachers of various disciplines were held during the morning assembly and pupils took part enthusiastically in these events. In class, Nano lessons were used to promote a deep understanding of the concept of friendships and also to analyse pupils’ perceptions of others. Mrs Soh Pei Wen, a Nano mentor interviewed for this article, noted that during the lessons, the students were not only able to discuss their feelings, but also to rationalise why they were feeling that way. A pupil in the Nano group, Joshua Seah Wei Hao, agreed and stated that the lesson made him think deeper about the concept.

Language Games
In addition to the thinking games held in the school hall, Nan Hua pupils also had the chance to play some language games designed by pupils from the Primary 4 GEP programme. Besides showcasing their works at the school foyer, the creators of these games taught their fellow schoolmates how to play the games by explaining the game concepts.
Debate Showcase
After an intense debate, Hwa Chong Institution won and the best speaker was the Second Opposition Speaker from Hwa Chong. The chief judge for the event, Mr Immanuel Tan from the Debating Association of Singapore, stated that the quality of the debate was very high and that members of the audience also contributed excellent ideas. Emily Zhao of 6KTAG4, Nan Hua’s debate team captain, felt that the judges’ decision was fair because she observed that Hwa Chong’s key arguments were stronger. She added that the debate showcase was exciting for her as she had witnessed two excellent teams debate each other and had learnt the importance of teamwork in debating.
The highlight of the Thinking Week was the annual Debate Showcase held on Friday. The 2011 Secondary School Debating Champion, Raffles Institution, battled the 2010 Secondary School Debating Champion, Hwa Chong Institution, over a motion on a controversial issue that concerned them at a personal level – “This house will abolish singe-gender schools in Singapore.”
Thinking Week 2011 was indeed a rousing success and it had really entrenched itself as a key event in the school calendar. We can’t wait till Thinking Week 2012!
Student Journalists from the Higher English Language and Liberal Arts Society (HELLAS) of
Nan Hua Primary School
Before the debate between the powerhouses began, Mr Thomas Lim, the debate coach of Nan Hua Primary School, gave an informative lecture on the key elements of a debate while the student audience, pupils from the Primary 4 and 5, took down important notes to reflect on.
The debate format was a unique one in which not only did the two teams debate each other, at the end of every speech, there was a cross-examination during which members of the audience were also allowed to participate by giving their viewpoints. Debaters from each team as well as the chairman of the debate, Mr Lim, had to address each point raised by the members of the audience.

Future Problem Solving Programme (FPSP) International is an organisation committed to stimulating critical and creative thinking skills, encouraging students from around the world to develop a vision for the future, and preparing students for leadership roles.
The FPSP 2011 International Conference was held in Wisconsin, USA, from 9–12 June. Our student, Cerise Lim of 6KTAG4, attended the conference. She shares with us the enriching experience that this conference had given her.
“Attending the FPSP International Conference in Wisconsin was a memorable experience for me. It was something I enjoyed and I got to interact and compete
with students from other countries, who have a passion for it.
I also had the chance to engage in fun activities with other Singaporean Future Problem Solvers and Community Problem Solvers. I got to learn more about America,
experience walking around in forests and do many things that I could not have the opportunity to do back home.
Most importantly, this trip had definitely taught me to be more independent. I had to learn to take care of myself and exercise self-control (like resisting the temptation to eat ice-cream for breakfast). I now “appreciate” my parents’ nagging as they are ever-ready to remind me to do the right and wise things. This trip to the USA has indeed been a very enriching experience!

iPad@NHPSOne of the most exciting inventions in recent years is the iPad tablet computer designed by Apple. The school has seen the potential of the device in making learning more interactive, exciting and effective and a pilot programme was introduced in two classes, Primary 4TAG3 and 5TAG4, as well as in the Higher English Language and Liberal Arts Society (HELLAS).
Teachers from both classes used the iPad as a teaching tool and the pupils also worked on their learning activities via the iPads’ applications. Many used the web-browser to research on ideas for their assignments, created collaborative mind-maps on Popplet, drafted and edited their reports on the word processor, made notes during their lessons on a notebook application, and even created PowerPoint presentations using Keynote. Pupils also had the chance to play Scrabble and Sudoku with their friends on the devices during their free periods.
Besides the daily learning activities, the teachers also explored using the devices for assessment. The pupils used the applications to create artifacts for their continual assessment tasks like essays, compositions, reports and even class performances which were recorded using the built-in video camera and played back for class critique. One of the greatest features of the iPad is its mobility and its long battery life. Pupils from the P5 GEP programme took the iPads out of school for a Math Trail at IMM and used several interesting applications in order to complete their tasks for the Trail.
The iPads, on a whole, have been extremely well-received by the pupils in the pilot project. Pupils in Nan Hua can certainly look forward to opportunities to use the iPads in their classrooms in the coming year.

Extraordinary Books for Extraordinary Children Workshop
16 pupils from the Primary 4 and 5 Gifted Education Programme took part in the Extraordinary Books for Extraordinary Children workshop to learn more about developing reading skills and to help in the development of the reading programme for 2012. The 12-hour workshop, held over three sessions during the PSLE marking week, allowed the pupils to learn about the importance of developing a reading habit and to think about ways to develop a reading culture in Nan Hua Primary.
During the first two sessions held in the Nan Hua Library, the participants underwent a lecture by Mr Thomas Lim on Reading and proceeded to review the books on the Recommended Reading List. After reading and reviewing the books, the pupils went on to use the iPads to create interesting learning activities to stimulate the interest of pupils in these books. All in all, the participants created activities for more than 80 books.
Extraordinary Books for Extraordinary Children Workshop / iPad@NHPS
The highlight of the workshop was a “Book Grab” at the National Library at Victoria Street on 22 October. The pupils spent the session reading and reviewing books in the Central Library Children’s Collection and the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library to pick out books that are worth adding to the 2012 Recommended Reading List. The pupils used the iPads to note down their choices and compiled a list of close to 100 books that our Nan Hua Library
will stock in 2012.
The purpose of this reading development programme is to make reading more fun and entertaining, and to develop our schoolmates’ love for reading and learning. Personally, I feel that the workshop was a meaningful
experience and I believe the activities developed would help students to understand the books better and learn about ideas found in the book. After browsing through many books, the participants have picked out those with high quality content and I think our schoolmates can enjoy and appreciate these books. We certainly hope that all of our schoolmates will look forward to the new collections and read more!

P5 Adventure Camp
体
All Primary 5 pupils of Nan Hua Primary School attended a ‘3D2N’ adventure camp, which was held at the MOE Jalan Bahtera Adventure Centre (JBAC) from 4 – 6 July.
Organised by the school as part of the outdoor education programme, the P5 adventure camp aims to equip pupils with the necessary skills to be independent and responsible, and to step out of their comfort zones and move beyond their limits. It also seeks to help pupils to build life skills in communication and cooperation, develop a higher self-esteem and face challenges with greater confidence.
We celebrated Racial Harmony Day on 21 July by turning up in school in Singapore’s various ethnic costumes. This is an important day for us as it reminds us of the importance of maintaining racial harmony amongst the people living in Singapore. Below are some snapshots of that day’s events. The theme for this year is “HOME: Joint Hopes, Shared Memories”.

Special Tributes to Our Teachers
“I transferred to Nan Hua Primary School when I was in Primary 4. Actually, it was a decision that my parents made on my behalf. Looking back, I have to say how grateful I was for that decision, because I thoroughly enjoyed my three years in Nan Hua. Not only were there abounding opportunities which allowed me to develop my interests ranging from acting to sports to creative writing, I also found caring teachers who inspired and guided me even after I graduated.
Nan Hua is also unique because of its Chinese traditions and till now, I still fondly recall the school motto and assembly talks on Confucian virtues. These values have grounded me and even shaped my own values, even though I was largely unconscious of it then.
I won’t say that I had specific goals in Nan Hua. Like almost every other primary school kid, I just wanted to do well and go to a good secondary school. But now I realize how important those
formative years at Nan Hua were! I loved the sense of community, the conducive learning environment, and the lessons both inside and outside the classroom which taught me that there was more to my education than just getting good grades.
I pride myself on being a Nan Hua alumnus and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the school, the principals, teachers and my peers for all that that they have impressed on me. Somehow, I would not imagine how my life would turn out if I had not stepped into the portals of Nan Hua. Short of being a turning point, being part of the Nan Hua family has moulded me in ways I am just beginning to understand and I cannot thank my alma mater more for all its efforts in nurturing me. ”

“我非常感谢南华小学在六年里给我的栽培。在老师循循善诱的教导下,南华给我在学习上打好基础,同时也教我做人的原则。最重要的是,学校的校训“忠,孝,仁,爱,礼,义,廉,耻”让我铭记在心,作为我日后处事待人的指南。Although a scholarship in no way guarantees success, without the academic foundations laid by my teachers and the moral foundations laid by the school, I daresay I would never have achieved anything at all. I am honoured by the school’s concern for me even after so many years, and I am proud to call Nan Hua my alma mater.”

STAFF matters
This is my ninth year of service in Nan Hua. In the course of my career in this school, I have served as a teacher, a subject head and then a Head of department of the Gifted Education Programme. It is my privilege to be able to continue to serve in Nan Hua but now in a different capacity, as a vice-principal. In this new role, I hope to TOUCH the hearts and minds of both teachers and pupils in my interactions with them, IGNITE the passion in each individual and WALK ALONGSIDE them as they grow and discover.
Mrs Finella GohVice-Principal
With great delight and pleasure, we would like to welcome our new Vice-Principal, Mrs Finella Goh.
