Emma Munro Emma joins QCC as a Learning Support Assistant. She has lived in Picton for the past two and a half years and comes from Pleasant Valley in Geraldine. She loves sea kayaking and is a potter with her own studio. Welcome Emma.

SIR PETER BLAKE TRUST YOUTH ENVIROLEADERS (YELF)

Congratulations to Jack Clerke who was selected from almost 400 applicants to attend the Sir Peter Blake Trust Youth EnviroLeaders

Forum held in New Plymouth in April. Below is an article written by Jack on his experience.

During the last school holidays, I was lucky enough to be chosen out of 350 applicants to represent QCC in the YELF programme. YELF (Youth EnviroLeaders Forum) is a collaboration between the Sir Peter Blake Trust and The Ministry for the Environment and has been held annually for over a decade all across the country. My application landed me in a week-long, fully funded leadership camp, with a

Page 5: PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT - qcc.school.nzqcc.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/11-May.pdf · From Monday 7th May, QCC is using an automated system to send text messages to alert parents

particular emphasis on the issue of Climate Change. Along with 55 other students in Years 11-13, I spent an amazing and eye-opening week in New Plymouth, learning all about what the issue of Climate Change means to our country and how we as youth are the driving force for environmental change. Over my week away I had the opportunity to visit dairy farms, power production plants and meet with representatives in these industries. I learnt that everyone has a different opinion and change has to involve everyone and all their viewpoints. This was also illustrated in our two hour mock parliamentary debate, in which we were sorted into different groups where we had to sell our side of the story. It was amazing to meet with experts from a variety of fields. We had award winning videographers and journalists come in and run workshops where they shared their expertise on how media can educate the public on what climate change is and how they can make a difference. We also had a workshop on Urban Planning with experts in this field, where we mapped out areas that will be affected by Climate Change in the near future and how communities will need to adapt to this. I was fascinated by professors from both Auckland and Waikato Universities, who lectured in Marine Biology and Ecology. We went out by boat into the New Plymouth Harbour and took samples of plankton. Later on, Marine Biologists explained to us how 40% of our carbon dioxide emissions are actually being absorbed by the ocean. In the lab, we looked at these tiny marine animals under a microscope and were taught how our actions are acidifying the ocean which could have a massive impact on marine life. Meeting with the mayor of New Plymouth and ministers from parliament was also very humbling and we all had way more questions than time allowed! Overall, I came back from YELF inspired. Over the week, I learnt way more about how our environment is really being affected by Climate Change and that “the world getting hotter” is only one part of the issue. I am really looking forward to making some changes in both my own life and at QCC that will have positive effects on our environment. I’m excited to put the leadership skills I developed up north to the test and hopefully get some other students involved too, because as the saying goes; “individually we are a drop, together we are an ocean.” By Jack Clerke

SAILING

Below is the final report from the 2018 Toyota optimist Nationals held in Picton last term.

Saturday March 31: First day of the main regatta – 2018 Toyota Optimist Nationals With a light Northerly already present in the morning, the D flag was put up on time and the Open Fleet headed out the Harbour. With not much wind expected the next morning the sailing instructions were already changed to make it possible to sail four races on the day. Conditions were tricky, occasional shifty and patchy conditions fooled several sailors. Overall it was a great day. The four races for the Yellow, Blue and Red Fleets were sailed without much difficulty. George Lee Rush from Wakatere and Lucas Day of Murrays Bay Yacht Club, ended on equal points with one drop after Day 1.

Page 6: PRINCIPAL’S COMMENT - qcc.school.nzqcc.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/11-May.pdf · From Monday 7th May, QCC is using an automated system to send text messages to alert parents

Sunday April 1: Easter and Second Day of the Qualifiers Unfortunately, the wind was lacking in the morning after the quick southerly that went through the night before. Everyone spent the Easter morning ashore in the sunshine with great coffee and food. Eventually the Green and Rainbow Fleets sailed a race in the inner Harbour in front of the club with hundreds of supporters cheering them on. After the Green Fleet race, D Flag was raised for the Open Fleet and the Optimists got towed out to the racing area. Tricky to get a course in with the light conditions but Race 1 got underway. The wind was not favourable to get another race in. The results got mixed up a bit due to Sunday’s race. Wakatere sailors took up first, second and third with all on six points after one drop (Harrison Loretz, Joshua Hyde, George Lee Rush). Hot on their heels were Mason Mulcahy from Murrays Bay and several Aussies. The Green Fleet got another race in in the inner Harbour. April 2- Optimist Nationals Finals – Day 1 On Monday the Open Fleet was divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze for the first day of the finals. Forecast was for a good NW breeze. Bring it on! D Flag was raised in time and Open Fleet headed out in a rush. The course was put in the same as the last two days. Races got underway with approximately 8 knots. Four races were sailed in quick succession with the Gold, Silver and Bronze Fleets. Fletcher Walters from Australia sailed into first place, followed closely by Joshua Hyde and George Lee Rush from Wakatere, Auckland. The Green and Rainbow Fleets had a scavenger hunt and an adventure sail on the schedule and were rewarded with drinks and Easter eggs. Again an awesome day on the water in the Marlborough Sounds hosted by the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club. April 3- Optimist Nationals Finals – Day 2 - The Decider The forecast was for some wind. The Fleet headed out to the racing area around 10 am. The wind was everywhere: Cook Strait 30 knots, Stephens Island plenty and wind in Kenepuru Sound. It just didn’t want to settle where we hoped to sail another two races to close off the regatta. Some waiting around by the sailors and everyone out there paid off and the Orange Flag was raised, and Gold Fleet started. But with the wind still not steady the race was blown up. Course reset, and Gold Fleet started again at 12:32 pm. Two races were sailed in the Gold, Silver and Bronze Fleet. Bronze had a general recall and had to start with Black Flag on their second race. The final placings for first and second were taken by sailors from Australia; Fletcher Walters with a good lead on Daniel Links. Third Place was George Lee Rush, only one point behind. Fourth and fifth were Joshua Hyde from Wakatere and Amelia Angus from Kohi. Amelia also scored best girl. The local QCYC sailors in Open Fleet not performing as expected after the qualifiers, not getting some of the sailors into Gold. Louie Poletti finished 28th in Silver Fleet. Brothers Hopkins, River and Moss ended 11th and 13th in Bronze Fleet. River managed a first in his last race and Moss third in his age group overall. The Green Fleet was won by Blake McKinnon from Kohimarama and the Rainbow Fleet by Zeudi Pearse from QCYC. The enthusiasm of the up and coming sailors was a joy to watch. The regatta was AWESOME! QCYC, Picton and Marlborough community are definitely winners! They have helped to create some great memories for hundreds of people sailing and exploring Marlborough. QCYC would like to thank all the people who made it all happen. Report by Christel Hopkins
