PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents and Guardians, As many of you know, I have returned to Sunway International School after a short leave of absence. In the 1 year since I was last here, we have introduced Grades 7 and 8 and there are 10 new faculty members. What a difference a year makes! The total student enrolment at SIS has grown to 250 students, and our little house is bursting at the seams. Plans are going well with the new building, and if construction progresses at the present rate, the building will be completed and fully occupied by July 2012. An area which never ceases to fascinate me about SIS is the students and the staff. At my first SIS Assembly, in July of 2009, I was supremely impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of the student body displayed in recognising and acknowledging the academic accomplishments of their peers. At the recent July 2011 Assembly,I was equally amazed at the outpouring of respect and admiration for this year’s award winners ‐ 2 different assemblies but the same reaction in both. Even though there were different students and a somewhat different staff, the enthusiasm of the student body is alive and well at SIS. The academic, social and cultural growth that has been a trademark of SIS since its inception is alive and well today. I am sure it will last forever. I would be remiss if I did not mention the staff. The bulk of the staff is new, but as with the students, the initial indications are that the present SIS teachers will be as hard working and dedicated as those in the past. I have had the opportunity to meet them all as a group, and several as individuals and I am very confident that your students will be in good hands with these new teachers. I do believe that every Principal has the same message to all parents when he/she asks for parental support. In order for a school to function well, all the constituent parts must work as a team ‐ parents, teachers, students and administrators. To this end, I encourage all of you to participate with us; to join our activities; to contact us as needed; and to be there for us. Finally, I would like to mention the efforts of 2 people who are on the front line every day and try to provide yeoman service to all – students, teachers and parents. Certainly our Deputy Principal, Ms. Annie Lim works very diligently to improve all facets of school life at SIS and our Coordinator ‐ Academic, Mr. Manny Avila, who ably assists Ms Lim and is always there to offer help when and if needed. Personally, I recognise their efforts and thank them very much. Again, I am very pleased to be back and I look forward to the future with SIS. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Parents and Guardians, As many of you know, I have returned to Sunway International School after a short leave of absence.
At the recent July 2011 Assembly, I was equally amazed at the outpouring of respect and admiration for this year’s award winners ‐ 2 different assemblies but the same reaction in both. On 29th July, SIS held its first Theme Day of the semester. In conjunction with
Canada Day, the theme was Red and White; staff and students shed their
uniforms and formal attire to sport their best red and white outfits to echo
Canada’s official colours.
The fully Canadian SIS teachers had a lot of fun
showing their Canadian pride, and enrolling others
to join in too. When asked: “Why are you dressing
up today?” some students responded that they
wanted to show support for their Canadian teachers or
family that they have living in Canada. Others indicated
that they really want to go to Canada to
further their studies and one student simply said “I love Canada!”
This Red and White theme day not only gave the students an
opportunity to show their respect for Canada, but also encouraged
them to demonstrate their own patriotism for their myriad countries of

We are pleased to announce the formation of a brand new student council at SIS! The administration and staff felt that the time was right for the students to take on leadership roles and develop their skills, interest and talents in civic service and promoting school spirit.
From 21st July to 1st August, hopeful candidates campaigned for the key positions of President, Vice President and Junior Vice President (Grades 7 and 8). After rounds of fantastic speeches, careful selection and intense voting, the results of the school‐wide elections were unanimous. The
winners admitted to feeling the pressure: “Sure, we feel the weight of responsibility but at the same time, we’re also really inspired to give back to the school!”
The council is made up of approximately 15 responsible students brimming with wonderful ideas to make SIS even better. The first official meeting was held on 1st August, where the counsellors discussed the agenda which included organising school activities, fostering school spirit, cooperation with the Administration
Office, as well as volunteering and fundraising initiatives. Meetings are held on a bi‐weekly basis and the Student Council welcomes interested students to attend and share their input. In the words of one of our members, "Don't wait for change to happen; Make it happen!"

HAPPENINGS @ SIS HOUSE
Pure Magic! The July 2011 semester started with a delightful surprise for SIS House boarders; they were treated to the highly acclaimed Magical Musicals theatre as the guests of Ms. Elizabeth Lee, Sunway Education Group Executive Director. On 15th July, a total of 43 students and invited parents arrived at The Amphitheatre, Sunway Lagoon for a 90 minute musical extravaganza. The West End talents, spectacular sets, finely executed choreography and popular show tunes from great Broadway classics such as Saturday Night Fever, Mamma Mia!, We Will Rock You, Grease, Dreamgirls and many more, captivated the hearts of our audience throughout the show. Our boarders raved that the rhythms kept their feet tapping all night long, and for some that have never seen such a performance before, the dancers in their attractive and colourful costumes made it a night to cherish. The SIS boarders would like to thank Ms. Elizabeth Lee for her kindness in hosting their magical musical experience, that will count as one of their fondest memories of SIS House!
On 4th August, representatives of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University came to SIS to acquaint interested students with the university and the city of Melbourne as a potential post‐secondary career choice. Presenters Mr. Glenn Westmore and Ms. Patricia Newstead, from the School of Life and Physical Sciences, RMIT University were greeted warmly by students from the Career Studies course and Study Hall who were keen to learn more of their options after SIS
Mr. Westmore and Ms. Newstead provided a presentation that included a video summary of the university’s background, the many intensive and rewarding foundation year courses available, and the vibrant student life both inside and outside of the classroom. Students also viewed a slideshow of the activities, committees, and events students partake in or near the RMIT campus. The presentation ended with a Q&A session, and students thanked the presenters for taking time to present them the opportunity and left with
From 4th to 5th August, SIS’ Grade 9 and 10 Healthy Active Living Education students went on a mission to drive home a very important message – that SIS has zero tolerance for bullies.
One of the ways to raise awareness of bullying and prevent any occurrences of the problem is to actively stand up and speak out against bullying. To this end, the Healthy Active Living Education students were set out to create public service announcements, serving to provide the student body with information on bullying, and to raise awareness of the seriousness of the issue.
The ultimate aim was to provide students with information and tools they could use to report and eradicate any risk of bullying. Ms. Carroll, the Healthy Active Living Education educator states, “I believe that school is a place where students should feel safe; safe to ask questions, safe to explore and safe to take risks. If there is even the slightest chance of students fearing to come to school due to issues surrounding bullying, their personal and academic growth will be negatively affected. Through this campaign we aimed to provide students with the means to advocate for
themselves and for each other, and eliminate bullying from ever occurring at SIS.”
As a member of the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, and in keeping with the spirit of giving back to society through education, SIS is proud to announce the SIS Music & Sports Scholarship.
The Music and Sports Scholarship are awarded by the School Scholarship Committee to deserving full time Malaysian students of Sunway International School.
Recipients of the scholarship will receive a 25 per cent tuition fee waiver each semester. The scholarship is subject to yearly review for renewal.
Applicants should be able to demonstrate substantial experience in their respective fields (music or sports), at both the local and international levels. Applicants are required to furnish supporting documents and reference materials for their achievements.
Interested applicants can obtain the scholarship application form from the SIS Administration Office, or email to [email protected]. All applications for the January 2012 semester must be received by 1st December 2011. Applications for the July 2012 semester must be received by 1st June 2012.

HIGHLIGHTS
Our SIS family welcomes 10 new teachers this semester; each one expert, experienced and enthusiastic! Their official profiles are on the SIS website, but here are some little known facts about them.
Brendan Narancsik has visited 16 countries to date, and in each one, he patiently explains the correct pronunciation and origins of his Hungarian surname.
Olivia Frei has had experience learning French, German, Latin and now that she’s in Asia, she’s looking forward to learning Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin.
When Mark Milberg volunteered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2006, he refused Anna Paquin, the second youngest Academy Award winner ever, entry into a film screening.
Melissa LeRoy grew up on a dairy farm in tiny Vankleek Hill, Ontario and was taught by Mr. Vaillancourt twice. 10 years and 15,000km later, she finds herself teaching next to her former teacher.
We’re in good hands with Emily Carroll ‐ she has been a lifeguard since she was 16 years old, and is certified to teach and perform First Aid and CPR!
Christopher Prior is an avid long distance cyclist; in just 2010 alone he logged 4,000km, out of which 2,000km was across 4 provinces in Canada ‐ Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
Serge Vaillancourt used to act in Dinner Theatre Murder Mysteries. He was paid to perform above the din of cutlery to 250 diners.
Marie‐Josee Talbot‐Provost has climbed 3 mountains higher than Malaysia’s Mt. Kinabalu (4,095m) ‐ Mt. Vallunaraju (5,686m) in Peru, Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,895m) in Tanzania, and Mt. Everest ‐ Second Base Camp (6,200m) on the Nepal ‐ Tibet borders.

Terrence Reich loves running so much, he has completed 5 full marathons, totalling 210km. Next year, Terrence plans to finish his first Ironman Triathlon in South Korea.
The secret to Subatra Muthusamy’s calm around her students is Indian classical music. Subatra loves it, listens to it and plays it ‐ on the veenai, an ancient stringed instrument from India.
