With the Nevada Day holiday at the end of the month on October 31 st , we want to show the community that we appreciate our great state and all it has to offer us. Dear Parents/ Guardians, As you are aware, parent teacher con- ferences are sched- uled for the end of this month. Our goal is to meet with 100% of our parents to discuss your child, share data, and work with you to set personalized goals for the 2014- 2015 school year. If you have not al- ready done so, please contact your child’s teacher to schedule a time to meet during the Oct. 24 th through Oct. 30 th conference week. The fundraising efforts of our PTO were successful yet again. We are so blessed to have such a hard working group of parents and students who raise money that goes directly back to our school. Just one of the many things they fund is our PE teach- er. Promoting a healthy and active lifestyle will benefit our students here at Westergard and far beyond. Thank you to everyone who contributes and gives back to our school during our PTO fundraising events. With the end of our 1 st quarter rapidly approaching on October 15 th , I want to remind parents of the importance of using the Infinite Campus parent portal to check your child’s grades and monitor their progress throughout the year. Thank you for your continued parent support and encourage you to make a point of saying hi whenever you are at the school. Sincerely, Tiffany McMaster IN THIS ISSUE

T his year's Run For Education will be Sunday, October 26 at Legends by the Sparks Mari-na. There will be three races
students and adults can choose to enter, a 10k Run, 5k Run/Walk, and the 1/2 Mile Kid's Fun Run. Everyone receives a Run For Education T-shirt and medals are awarded. Westergard earns money for our P.E. Program through the Kids In-Motion Grant for entering the Race.
Last year's Westergard students who par-ticipated brought our school over $1,200
which went into our P.E. Program to buy new equipment.
Your child's teacher sent home an Entry Form to register for the Race. More forms are in the front office if you need one.
There is an entry fee and checks are made payable to Westergard Elementary. The first race begins at 8 a.m. and this year there will be many fun activities before and after the race for students and fami-lies such as a bounce house, rock climbing wall, basketball and soccer. Drinks and energy snacks are also provided.
For more information you can vis-it: washoerunforeducation.org or see our team of teachers: Mr. Good, P.E., Mrs. Johnson, 1st grade, or me. See you at the event!
COUNSELOR’S CORNER BY MRS. VELASQUEZ
A s I write this article, the weather is beginning to change… a little chillier in the morning although the
days are still warm and clear. We are moving into autumn already and we are solidly into a wonderful new school year!
One of my priorities this year is encour-aging excellent attendance! Many educa-tors believe that consistent school attend-ance is THE most important factor contributing to school success.
It is clear that regular school attendance is critical to academic success which pre-pares our students for adult ca-reers. Aside from the academic part, regular school attendance provides chil-dren the opportunity to experience the culture of our community and the world
in which we live. In our classrooms, our students are able to test their perceptions and ideas, and understand their own iden-tity in relation to their peers. There are daily opportunities to learn and test social
skills, and learn how to make personal adjustments that con-tribute to overall success.
Let us all help our students to learn the importance of being on time and at-tending school regularly. Just a remind-er: the morning bell rings at 8:55 and students are in their seats ready to learn by 9:00am! Thank you.
Our year has started off to an amazing start! Our fall fund-raiser, Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough sales, has once again been a huge success. We sold a total of $54,113 in
cookie dough and Clubs Choice merchandise. This translates to $21,645 in profit for Westergard! This fundraiser continues to be a success year after year, mainly due to our committed students & families who go out and tirelessly sell to family and friends. Congratulations to all of you for your hard work and dedication and for helping us achieve our goal.
Thank you to all the students, parents, teachers, staff and volunteers who work so hard on this fundraiser. We could not do this without you! Please mark your calendars for cookie dough delivery day, Friday, October 17th.
Our next event is the Halloween Spooktacular on Tuesday, Octo-ber 28th. There will be food, games, a bake sale, bingo, a surprise game and an amazing haunted house too! We will need a lot of volun-teers for this event to be successful, so please email [email protected] if you are interested. Thanks!
Our next PTO meeting will be September 30th at 5:30 pm.
Our 501c3 status is underway! Progress has been made and we should have results soon.
If you have any questions about membership please contact Nicole Chewjlearn at [email protected]. Member-ship is free and there is a PTO form in the office.
