I hope that all families have had a very happy Christmas break and thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful weather and time together. It has been wonderful hearing and sharing holiday stories with families and the children over the past week or so. It is also terrific to see the children returned happy, refreshed and ready for lots of learning! Our Foundation (Prep) students started last Thursday and certainly demonstrated a sense of bubbly enthusiasm and feelings of true excitement as they experienced the first few days of their primary education. I firmly believe the beginning of the school year is most exciting as the children return to or begin school with a cheerful zest, spring in their feet and with a look of anticipation in their eyes! I am very confident that 2014 will be another stellar year for all of those associated with our wonderful school. Welcome to our new students and their families We have had quite a number of new students enrol this year which is extremely pleasing with our overall student enrolments being approximately 600. I would like to welcome all of the new children and their families and congratulate them on selecting our great school as their very important educational setting. We do have a wonderful school and I am sure the new students will thoroughly enjoy being part of the Glen Waverley Primary School Community and Family.

"I like calling my baby sister mèi mei. I am the big sister so I am
called jiě jie". - Summer OLT
“I am proud of learning Chinese”
- Lewis OLG
In Term 3 last year, we introduced after-school Chinese Mandarin classes for students in Foundation (Prep) to Year 2. From the outset, there was a strong interest and support from students and families who were keen to enrol in the program which resulted in two very busy terms of classes! The students learnt: how to greet each other in Chinese; the name of colour, telling the time; the four different tones which are the key to proper Chinese pronunciation; and how to write Chinese characters. All of the classroom work was reinforced by weekly homework – which has meant Chinese has been brought into the home and even mums and dads are learning! We are very fortunate at Glen Waverley Primary school for our students to have the opportunity to further their learning of Chinese Mandarin, especially with its predicted importance for those living and working in the Asia-Pacific region. Studies have shown that the most beneficial age to acquire language(s) is during childhood, and in our rapidly evolving global environment, the opportunity to consolidate learning of a foreign language can only help stand our students in good stead for future study and employment. Ms Wang will be implementing the program this year with Year One and Two students, so please keep an eye out for the notice which will be distributed soon.

On behalf of the school I would like to
thank Amasha (5SR) who very kindly came
and donated some extra sports equipment to
the school on the very first day back.
Amasha used her own pocket money and
also got the help of her family to buy two
sparkly handled skipping ropes, a packet of
four tennis balls and one large novelty
tennis ball. This equipment has been added
to our impressive range of sports equipment
that is kept in our sports storeroom and
used during PE lessons, sports incursions
and clinics and special events like our
upcoming Twilight Sports Night. It’s great
to see students so enthusiastic about helping
and participating in our
physical education program.
