This policy is developed to provide guidelines and outline circumstances where payments made to the school can be refunded to parents/guardians.
Purpose
To ensure camps and excursions are organised at no cost to the school and if avoidable parents do not incur a loss.
Refunds are all subject to the discretion of the Principal on a case by case basis, and usually follow the guidelines below.
Essential Student Learning Items
Fully refundable if paid in the preceding year and student does not commence school.
Pro-rata – based on the exit date per term.
Nil refund after commencement of Term 4.
Refunds are not available for payments made for Essential Student Learning Items that are retained

Camps, Sport and Excursions
Students withdrawing from an activity will not automatically be entitled to a refund.
Where the school is charged for the provision of a program or service as a bulk cost and not a ‘per
head’ cost, no refund will be given.
Where a ‘per head’ fee is charged, refunds may be given.
Where there is a combination of a bulk charge and a ‘per head’ charge in an excursion (e.g. a visit to
the zoo where the bus charge is bulk cost and the entry fee is a ‘per head’ cost) only the ‘per head’
component can be refunded.
Refunds may be considered under special circumstances and at the principal’s discretion.
Deposits paid for school camps and swimming will be non-refundable unless cancelled either by the
school or at the Principal’s discretion.
The ‘Camps and Excursion Refund Request’ form must be completed for all reimbursements within
14 days of the event. Form is available from the office.
Refunds will be processed once all outstanding costs are met.
Specific Procedures
If a refund is approved, a family credit note will be issued against the activity. The value of the credit may be applied to an outstanding invoice of the parents’ choice or left for the following year to be credited off an outstanding invoice of the parents’ choice. If there are no outstanding, invoices and the family are leaving the school the parent will be requested to provide their bank account details and the amount will be reimbursed through direct credit. Chelsea Heights Primary School is not permitted to reimburse cash to the student or parent.
Garden Club The vegetable gardens are looking incredible with
weekly garden club taking place on Thursday
lunchtimes. Mandy Munroe has been of huge help
in the garden as well as selling some of the produce
after school! All proceeds go back into purchasing
seedlings and materials for the garden so thank you
for all of your generous donations. The children love
to get involved in the gardens. It's a great place to
learn about caring for the environment, building
social relationships, science and to just have fun!
We look forward to many more fun-filled lunchtimes
in the garden and harvests to come!

Here is some food for thought about these 3 values.
Our Yarn Art 2017
Self-published Australian author Jim Poulter
celebrates our wonderful country in his books. He has
a long affiliation with the indigenous community. The
Secret of Dreaming is a wonderful introduction to
the story of creation, holding the land sacred.
Students have created native wildlife using yarn in a
style influenced by traditional Indigenous Australian
paintings and inspired by Jim’s illustrations.
Thank you to Claire and her team of volunteers for
this year’s Yarn Art Project!
RECENT EVENTS
Last month PFA had lots of fun hosting the Trivia Night.
We were very happy to see so many families attending
this night and everyone seemed to have a great time.
Thanks to all those whose came along, participated in
the games and dressed up in the diamond and denim
theme. Hope you had as much fun as we did. PFA
would also like to thank all the businesses that
donated items to our silent auctions and raffle.
The following week many students showed off their
dancing moves at our student disco. Much fun was
had dancing, singing and participating in games.
Students made a great effort dressing up in the rock
and bling clothes. Thank you to the parents who
helped out on the night.

RECIPE BOOKS

currently going through the final stages of editing.
We are hopeful these will be printed and available
by the Christmas market, if not very soon after. As
soon as we can we will have these available for pre
ordering.
Japanese 日本語
Year 1 students have started learning the words for
shapes, square, triangle, circle and rectangle, - do
ask your child to repeat these at home—we have
Square, triangle, circle and rectangle
しかく、さんかく、まる、ながしかく
shikaku, sankaku, maru and
nagashikaku
Years 2 and 3 students are starting on adjectives—adding colours to animals, and
getting to make complete sentences and questions:
なに を みます か nani o mimasu ka is the question “what do you see?”
ちゃいろ の くま を みますchairo no kuma o mimasu is “I see a brown bear”
We use shuwa sign language wherever we can as it provides prompts and
encouragement, so do ask your child for a demonstration as it is real fun, and
helps you memorise whole sentences.
The photo here shows students matching up hiragana
animal names with the pictures. みなさん、がんばってね!

Konnichi wa, everyone!
The month of November 十一月 juuichigatsu, in Japan it is
autumn, あき, aki, with leaves falling off the trees.
Foundation students are using the Japanese animal names
with more confidence- bear, bird, horse, cat and dog or
くま,とり,うま,ねこ,いぬ or
kuma, tori, uma, neko and inu
We are using shuwa Japanese sign language gestures to help
us learn and remember words and sentences. So if you see
your child flapping their hands above their heads, he or she is
probably signing and saying いぬ or inu for dog, with the
gesture that of floppy dog ears!
The Library staff and volunteers would like to thank the
families who have donated to our library fund this
year—without your support our library would not be
able to provide the students and staff with up-to-date
resources to support our student learning. Here is just
a sneak peek into what your donation does for our
library:
So from all of us in the library and
the staff and students of CHPS,
Library Update
To our CHPS Families,
Our library staff are always extremely grateful when parents come in and help, whether it be
helping with borrowing or simply sorting the shelves. We also are extremely grateful when we
have books donated to our library that students no longer want kept at home. To everyone who
helps us in any way we thank you.
We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge one family in particular, the Ingram/
Fennel family. Some of you may remember Leigh Fennel. Leigh was Cody, Jules and Alyx Ingram’s
grandmother who always walked her grandchildren every day to and from school no matter what
the weather was like. Leigh donated many posters and books to our library and every year she
would kindly purchase books for each of her grandchildren’s classes. Sadly Leigh is no longer with
us, her husband Tery Fennel has kept up with his wife’s tradition in her memory and this year the
Fennel family have again donated brand new books to three lucky classrooms.
Cody, Jules and Alyx each got to select what their class gets to read and from what we have heard
they chose well! So we would like to publicly acknowledge the ongoing kindness that this family
has always shown our school, to Tery Fennel and the Ingram Family, thank you most sincerely.
CHPS Library Staff.

Physical Education
Recent article from the Leader Newspaper:
ACTIVE kids from Chelsea Heights Primary are ditching the car and opting to ride, walk, skate or scoot to school.
Bicycle Network is helping by pointing out safe and direct routes with footpath stickers.
The school joined the Ride2School’s Active Paths program, which launched on October 24, to encourage more littlies and their parents to adopt healthy habits.
Physical education teacher Travis Stevenson said he was keen to see it happen.
On Thursday 19th of October Riley Gibbons competed at the SSV Southern Metropolitan Regional Track and Field Championships at Cranbourne Athletics Track Casey Fields in the 200m sprint. He finished in 1st place with a personal best (PB) time of 28.50 seconds which qualified him to compete at the State Championships.
On Monday 30th of October, Riley competed at the SSV State Track and Field Championships at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. Riley was in the second heat of the 11 Yr. Boys 200m and finished 4th in his heat with a time of 29.48 seconds. Unfortunately, Riley just missed out on reaching the final by two places but he did extremely well and should be very proud of what he has accomplished. He finished 10th overall in the State of Victoria for 11 Yr. 200m which is an amazing achievement. The whole Chelsea Heights PS community is proud of Riley and just want to once again congratulate him on a brilliant effort. Way to go Riley!!
Well done Riley Gibbons!
Walk to School Month Class 5/6 Freeman won the Class of the Month for Walk to School Month with a total of 603 active travel trip to and from school by walking, scooting or riding. Well done!
Performing Arts
What an amazing year it has been for the Performing Arts department and all of the children
involved in the productions. We have achieved great success with the quality of the production
and the performances by the children that we have already started planning 2019!
Thank you to all of the Junior School parents who took the time to respond to our survey monkey.
The results were extremely positive and re-assured us again that we are doing a great job and
the kids are learning and having fun at the same time!
This term students have been exploring the two key elements of music, beat and rhythm. It has
been fun structuring lessons to appeal to the interests of the vast ages of the children. I have
managed to squeeze in some music appreciation and history in there, showing clips from Elvis
Presley, The Beatles, Ella Fitzgerald and Guns and Roses. There has definitely been a lot of loud
singalongs and lots of laughs at the ‘old fashioned’ songs and ‘weird dancing styles’.
Speaking of laughter it’s almost time to start rehearsals for the annual Christmas Concert! That’s
right and the teachers have already started preparing for their number, it may be hard to top the
‘Men in Black’ show stopper from last year though, but we will try!! Can you believe that it is
almost Christmas, it must be the warm weather that’s tricking us! I hope all of the parents are
ready for the influx of the Christmas songs that will be coming home soon, ones that are going to
be played over and over and over again ( sorry).
Your child will shortly begin rehearsing for the concert which is held on the grass outside the
Green Zone. This year we are having a ‘Pot Luck’ theme, so there will be a real mixture of
Christmas and Celebration songs, where anything goes!
When: 5pm—7pm WEDNESDAY 13th DECEMBER
More information will arrive home at a later date.

Visual Arts
Welcome to the final term in the Art Studio for 2017!
Foundation students have been exploring the
element of texture and discussing why we use it
in art. They enjoyed doing rubbings outside
looking for different textures on trees, paths,
concrete and buildings. Foundation are now
making colour choices to paint their clay fish
which they decorated with a variety of lines and
patterns.
Students in Level 1/2 have completed painting
their clay birds, making strong choices with
colour and design. They have explored how to
use line and pattern to create a variety of
different textures such as soft, fluffy, hard,
rough and spiky.
Levels 3/4 have been working on
completing an artwork consisting of three
pieces, they have created a superhero, a
background scene for their superhero and
a clay relief sculpture with their heroes
catchphrase. These three pieces will be
placed together to show a story.
Visual Arts cont...
Students in Level 5 have been challenged to use their
problem solving skills to design and make a 3D card
guitar that uses no glue or tape to join it together. They
have done an amazing job looking at ways to create the
guitars and have included some very interesting design
choices.
Level 6 have begun working on
submitting designs for their
graduation mural piece which at
this stage is top secret. I can share
that their work has demonstrated a
very strong understanding on how
to use the elements of line, shape,
pattern and colour and their final
pieces will look amazing!
