There’s nothing particularly special about my garden up Plymouth Hill, but as a bird ringer I have the advantage of being able to put up a mist net, and as a result, many of the birds that flit, quickly, through my garden, which I probably wouldn’t have seen, will end up in my net for me to see, study, ring and release, instead. As I write, I’ve managed to trap and ring almost 3,500 different birds of 43 species, in six years in my garden. That’s quite a lot, isn’t it? Now, admittedly, a lot of them are common garden birds, for example, Chaffinches, House Sparrows and Greenfinch, but, I’ve also caught much less common birds, such as Treecreepers, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Nuthatches and Bullfinches. It doesn’t end there, as I’ve been lucky enough to catch quite rare birds, such as Grasshopper Warbler, Whitethroat, Garden Warblers, Sedge Warblers, Blackcap and my favourite bird, the Firecrest, one of which you can see below. Now, I’m no expert, but I do know a bit about British birds and am still learning about Dartmoor’s birdlife. If you see any bird you can’t identify, an unusual one, or you have any questions, then do, please get in touch. like to let you know about where ‘ my birds’ have gone to, or come from, and to give you some idea of how long birds live, amongst other things. The moral of the story, however, is that if you keep your eyes on your garden as much as you can, even whilst you’re doing the washing up… you just never know!

Warning signals, red flags by day and red lamps by night, indicate that live firing is taking place within the range boundaries, which are marked by red and white poles. When warning signals are displayed do not cross the range boundary. If the warning signals are not hoisted by 0900 (Apr-Sep) no live firing will take place that day and any bangs you hear will be blank cartridges or fireworks. DAY firing is between sunrise and sunset. NIGHT firing is between sunset and sunrise. Flags are lowered as soon as live firing ceases. PRINCETOWN RETIREMENT FELLOWSHIP

The Princetown Group of the Retirement Fellowship is open to retired men and women who live or have worked in Princetown, on Dartmoor and the surrounding areas. The Group is affiliated to the national organisation of the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship through it’s membership of the Cornwall and West Devon

Branch. Thus, it abides by that organisation’s constitution and aims. However, it is autonomous in all matters relating to the day to day running of the Group. The main aims of the C. S. Retirement Fellowship are to help relieve any problems, through friendship, which may be encountered in retirement. Our motto being “Caring, Sharing and Supporting”. We try to either visit or write to all Princetown Group members and beneficiaries each month to keep everyone up to date on our activities and encourage an active social programme. All of the activities arranged are in accordance with wishes of the members, being discussed and agreed at our regular get-togethers. The Group meets on the first Thursday of each month throughout the year. During the winter months we also invite a Guest Speaker to address the meeting on a variety of interesting subjects, each usually complimented by a photographic slide-show. In December we also organise a Christmas Lunch and Party in the Prince of Wales Hotel, and in April we organise a St George’s Day Luncheon, in a different venue each year. Between May and October, usually on the third Thursday of the month, we arrange day trips to places of interest, sometimes including dinner in a recommended hostelry on the way home. Since 2007 we have organised a weeks Spring-time holiday every year, this year twelve of us went to Killarney in Ireland.

News from Princetown Community Primary School

What a great start to the summer term. We really look forward to this time of year in the school calendar and enjoy getting outside as part of our learning. We teach the curriculum through a range of exciting themed topics and enrich the children’s experiences with trips, visitors, out of school activities and hopefully special memorable moments. This term: Tawny Owls are learning about Where Things Come From Kestrels are going to discover what it was like to live in Roman times Buzzards are exploring the New World with Sir Francis Drake in Tudor times.

Tavistock Area Children's Centre

We are part of the Sure Start Government initiative and we have been involved in Princetown since October 2007 and provide 2 FREE sessions a week.

Our aim is to support families with children aged 0-5 years old. As well as play we can offer training courses and specialised sessions to our members, including Baby Massage & Signing, Young Parents groups, Baby Clinics, Special Needs support and much more. Some families need more specialised help and we can usually offer that as well. We also run subsidised coach trips once a year. Other agencies, such as Citizens Advice Bureau, Health Visitors etc, regularly visit our sessions to give advice and guidance to parents and carers. We work closely with the local Pre-Schools & Baby & Toddler groups. Every Monday Princetown Library, Bounce & Rhyme, 11.15-12.00 A session with a storytime & singing, puppets & musical instruments.

DARTMOOR FOREST PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL NEWSLETTER COVERING APRIL 2010 TO MARCH 2011

CHAIR’S REPORT

The last 12 months have been a difficult time for most councils, whatever their size, and our experience has been typical of the problems facing all of us. On the negative side, the decision taken by West Devon Borough Council to cut funding for Princetown‟s public toilets presented us with a dilemma which we hope to have solved by raising the precept by a substantial amount. This decision was not taken lightly and did not receive universal approval. It remains to be seen whether the decision was right or wrong. A problem was also created by HMCA ceasing to trade. Fortunately, the Duchy of Cornwall‟s offer to fill the void temporarily was a big help in ensuring that the Community Centre continued to function until a new body could be formed. Hopefully this process is now happening and, with help from all involved, could see a solution to ensuring the success of the Centre. On the positive side, due to the initiative of the Clerk and other council members, the children‟s playground has received financial help to replace some of the ageing equipment. This should make the playground a much more enjoyable experience for the younger Princetown residents. I would also, for this my last newsletter, like to thank all my fellow Councillors, both past and present, for their dedication and help over the years; especially the three Parish clerks, who have done so much to make all of our tasks easier to understand and to carry out.

A grant for £35,000 was secured for new equipment in the Princetown play area

Tree works were carried out at Postbridge cemetery to prevent further damage to one of the boundary walls

Princetown Community Centre signage was erected and the Centre‟s access road was painted to warn drivers of children crossing

The telephone kiosk opposite the village green in Princetown was painted

A fourth dog litter bin was installed on the footpath behind the school in Princetown and dog litter signage was erected around the village

Parish Plan – a new plan will be drawn up to reflect the current priorities in the Parish

Princetown Play Area – more funding will be sought to purchase new swings and more equipment for the toddler area

Parish noticeboards – an additional notice board will be erected in Hexworthy. The position is subject to approval by the Park Authority. The noticeboard in Tavistock Road, Princetown will be re-instated

News from Princetown Scout Group. First of all I would like to thank everybody concerned with getting this publication off the ground. It gives groups such as Princetown Scouts the opportunity to shout about all of the exciting activities we get involved in, especially at this busy time of year. The last year has been a tremendous success for the Group with four camping weekends and the completion by our older scouts of the world famous ‘Malvern Challenge’ which took place last summer in Gloucestershire. Princetown was very lucky to be given an invitation to the event which involved an expedition in the stunning Malvern Hills countryside, taking on such activities as climbing, abseiling and problem solving. The weekend culminated in a gathering of over 3,000 scouts with live music and other entertainment. This is just an example of the kind of opportunities that scouting has to offer. The younger members of our group have also been busy with Cubs and Beaver Scouts taking part in a number of Camps, Sleepovers and sport activities. Princetown was well represented at the District Swimming Gala held at Tavistock, whilst other activities include Cycling, Archery and Climbing. In the coming months the boys and girls will be out and about again, with the group setting off for a camping weekend at Foxcove, near Plymstock in June. This is a large camping site, owned by Plymouth Scout Association which is fast becoming a favourite destination for our group with its excellent facilities and idyllic woodland setting. Like all scout groups, funding continues to be a challenge and the young people will be actively involved in fundraising activities during the year so don’t be surprised to see them out and about around the village raising money for equipment and travelling costs. Princetown scout group is welcoming new members and young boys and girls are welcome to become Beaver Scouts from the age of six years. Two years later they move up to become Cub Scouts and finally Scouts from the age of Ten and a Half Years. Scouting is the world’s largest youth organisation and offers the chance to get involved in sports and outdoor activities as well as having a social and educational side. The organisation is inclusive and welcomes young people from all faiths and social backgrounds. Although behaviour and discipline are important to any scout group, the most important objective is to have fun with our friends and the members are always given the chance to have an input into the planning of activities. The group is very much what the members make it and new members are always welcome, as are adult helpers who can be either full or part time. The only qualification is enthusiasm for working with young people and enjoying the outdoor activities that scouting has to offer. PRINCETOWN HISTORY CLUB by Roger Paul

We meet in the evenings on the First Tuesday of each month throughout the year at the Community Centre during the winter months and during the summer at the various outdoor venues.

Winter times are 7-30pm however in the summer we usually meet at 7pm, depending upon the venue.

Membership is £5 per year, collected at the December Social meeting usually held in either the Plume of Feathers or Prince of Wales pub, where we have a Quiz, together with a Buffet Meal.

We are a very casual society, with about 50 members. We have a wide variety of speakers who bring with them either slides or film to support the topics of the evening. Typical of these are some of the current year 2011 topics:

Tuesday 7th June Visit Wistmans Wood meet, 7pm at Two Bridges led by Simon Dell. Tuesday 5th July Visit Foggintor Quarries, meet 7pm at Yellowmead Track, this is being led by Ivan Mead who was brought up at Foggintor and went to Fourwinds School. Tuesday 2nd August Walk around Chagford, meet 7pm in the Square to discover the the history of this moorland village.

So you will see that try to we cater for all individuals and when we put together the following year’s programme we rely on our members put forward suggestions. Our yearly programmes are on display at The High Dartmoor Centre, The Old Wesleyan Chapel and Princetown Library.
