• CO is a UK government agency. Amongst its goals is delivery of projects to time, quality and cost, realising benefits.• CO standards include PRINCE2, MSP, P3O, M_o_R, ITIL etc.• CO’s project management standard – PRINCE2 (PRojects In Controlled Environments

version 2), originally developed for public administration, has become increasingly popular also in the commercial sphere and is now the de facto standard for project management in the UK. Its use has spread beyond the UK to more than 50 other countries.

• Current version of PRINCE2 standard is the “PRINCE2 Manual - Managing Successful projects with PRINCE2, 2009 edition”, released on 16.6.2009.

• The certification body for PRINCE2 is the APM Group (APMG).• Accreditation is governed by the passing of two exams – the Foundation &

Practitioner.• A number of accredited training organisations – ATOs offer courses, most of which

also include exam entry in the fee.• All certified ones gain one year free access to the knowledge pool of the PRINCE2

A project management method. A broad collection of ‘good practices’ for project management.

Prescriptive. Non-prescriptive.

An integrated set of processes and themes (they are not isolated silos that can be selectively applied).

Each topic area can be referred to in isolation of others.

Covers all project management roles. Targeted at Project Managers.

• The differences between PRINCE2 (a method) and a BoK make them highly complementary.

• PRINCE2 provides a framework of what needs to be done, by who and when.

• The BoK provides a range of techniques of how those things can be done.

• Tailoring PRINCE2 if the organization is aligned to any particular BoK (e.g. the Project Management Institute – PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide – PMBOK and its superstructure standards) should include:

• Agreeing a single set of terms to apply. For example, in the Project Management Institute’s Body of Knowledge the Project Sponsor is equivalent to PRINCE2’s Executive

• Aligning PRINCE2’s management products with any management products recommended by the BoK. For example, the Project Charter in PMBOK is equivalent to PRINCE2’s Project Brief.
