Message from theHead of Pr imary

Last week 93 pupils from Year 5 to Year 7 entered their LAMDA examination. The LAMDA programme has been running now for three years and this year it was extended to Secondary. Pupils were entered for Verse and Prose and Devised Performance, working both independently and some as part of a group. The visiting examiner was very impressed that so many second language learners were involved in the programme and praised the school for making this opportunity available. We await our results which should arrive in 4-6 weeks!

My final assembly of the term with Year 5 and 6 was a celebration of this terms work, including the magnificent Chocolate Factories designed and made by the Year 6 pupils. A winner and runner up was chosen from each Year 6 class and it was almost an impossible task to choose as the standard was so high. The pupils were presented with a certificate and, of course, a bar of chocolate!

Further assembly work this term can be seen displayed outside the music room. Year 6 have followed a theme dealing with human rights and year 6G presented their

work on Martin Luther King in assembly. Their “dreams” and aspirations for their future world are displayed for all to read. Year 5 have looked closely at themselves and asked “What type of learner am I?” 5S and 5R have displayed their work as leaves as part of their rainforest topic and 5M have displayed their work as stepping stones.

Assemblies from Year 1 to Year 3 have focused on keeping safe at school. All the children know not to open outside doors to anybody, not to ask strangers to get balls and toys that go over the fence and all the other school rules linked to safety. If parents are visiting the school or arrive late in the mornings, please remember not to ask a child to open the door for you.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a happy Easter and hope you enjoy reading your child´s end of term report, which will be available on line from April 3rd for Year 1 to Year 6.

MARCH 2012

The Reception children had a great morning out in Torrellano. They all had a trip on a miniature steam train and visited the train museum. They saw lots of old train artifacts including the rail road, flags, clocks, toy trains and even a model of the station master. We also saw a program about Thomas the Tank Engine. We all learnt a lot and had a fantastic trip.

The Bear Hunt and Nursery Picnic

The Nursery children have really enjoyed their topic of Teddy Bears. All the children brought their teddy bear to school for a special teddy bears picnic, where they ate lots of teddy bear cakes and biscuits and sang lots of songs.

The children have also been reading the story The Bear Hunt and had lots of fun acting out the story in the siesta hall. The teaching assistants worked really hard preparing it and there was even a real bear, or was it really one of the teaching assistants? ! We would like to thank them all for their great efforts.

In Key Stage 1, as part of our PSHE curriculum, we have been focussing on our playground rules and learning new playground games. As part of circle time each week, we talk about a rule, why we have it and how it can help us on the ‘patio’. We have really enjoyed learning the new games with our class and we are now playing many of the games during our ‘patio’ time. Two of our favourite games are ‘Sharks’ and ‘Action’. You can see us playing them in the photos.

World BookDay

World Book Day is a celebration! It’s a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it’s a celebration of reading. In fact, it’s the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.

This term Year 6 had an amazing homework project which was to make their own chocolate factories. The children were encouraged to use recycled materials and think about the chocolate making process that they have learnt about. Additionally the children needed to be imaginative and creative with their work. On March 16th, seventy two chocolate factories arrived in school and they are now exhibited in a number of areas including the school office/reception area, the library and also near the exit to the Key Stage 1 patio.

“It was incredible seeing the amount of creativity and imagination used by the children,” Mrs Thomas, Head of Primary, commented, “I can see that the children have spent a lot of time and effort producing some amazing Chocolate factories... Well done Year 6!”In addition to this being a homework project, it was a competition with two factories being picked from each class as winners and runners-up. The winners and runners up are:

“I HAVE A DREAM”

Personal, Social, and Health Education

This term Year 6 has been looking at what their goals are and in particular they looked at Martin Luther King´s speech “I Have a Dream”. The Children listened to the Speech that King gave in 1963 and were inspired by his messages and the fact that he believed in a non violent approach to achieving his goals. They then went on to express their dreams, ambitions and goals for the future by writing a speech or a poem. Here are a few examples of the children´s thoughts about the future. Examples from members of 6G: Selene, Jorge, Uma and Paula.

COBIS POEMCOMPETITION

The global COBIS Student Poetry Competition - The judging panel looks forward to reading poems submitted from students in full-time education at COBIS schools worldwide.

This year’s competition is to ‘bring an animal alive’ through poetry

For example poems could feature:

Out of 24 poems written by year 6 children the two that have been selected to enter this year´s competition, representing BSA are from Paula D´Amore de Oliveria (6G) whose poem is entitled “Bring and Animal Alive” and Santiago Fernandez De Jaen (6G), whose poem is “Bring a Tiger Alive”.

BRING A TIGER ALIVE

Orange stripes brightening the jungle, eyes gleaming with the moonlight.

Silver claws waiting for its prey, Bent to spring on it he is.

Running as fast as light he runs, observing he is, looking for you.

Now running he is nobody can see him now he leaps two meters high.

But he isn’t finished yet, looking carefully for something to eat.

A movement catches his eye, what is it a deer family!

Now the feast is about to begin, eyes sparkling, his claws ready His teeth as sharp as daggers,

he is dreaming of the feast.Suddenly he hears something,

he sees orange but it doesn’t growl. Something he has heard but what is it?

What could it be? He isn’t scared he is concentrating on his prey,

he doesn’t see what is behind him. Suddenly BANG!!!!! He jumps but it doesn’t work,

the shot has hit him and then he is not there!
