Primary Geography Alive Diversity Across Asia (Lesson 7) Lesson 7: What is the quality of life like in Asia? Content focus: In this lesson students investigate the ‘quality of life’ experienced by those living in selected Asian countries. In doing so they are introduced to a range of data presented in a graphic form. They also have an opportunity to communicate their knowledge and understanding in a written form. Resources: Resource: Gapminder http://www.gapminder.org/world/ Resource: National Geographic Map Maker https://mapmaker.nationalgeographic.org Worksheet 1: Comparison table Worksheet 2: Comparison paragraph scaffold Key inquiry questions: What is it like to live in Asia? Outcomes: A student: identifies quality of life indicators reads and interprets graphs compares the quality of life in TWO countries Lesson sequence: What is it like to live in Asia? Step 1: Teacher introduces topic by asking students to brainstorm what is meant by the term quality of life. Student responses are written on board under the heading ‘Indicators of Quality of Life’ for example: income, housing, education, number of doctors and internet connection. Step 2: Students are introduced to Gapminder. The teacher displays the main indicators for Australia. Students undertake free exploration of Gapminder (play) to generate interest in life in Asian countries using indicators, tracking one country over time and comparing countries. Alternative software: https://mapmaker.nationalgeographic.org using economic layers. Step 3: Students select two countries in Asia and record the indicators for that country including income, housing, literacy , number of doctors and internet connection on Worksheet 1. Step 4: Follow-up with a visible thinking activity: What do you see? What do you think? What do you wonder? Step 5: Literacy activity: Teacher provides scaffold for a comparison paragraph (Worksheet 2). Teacher models a comparison between two Asian countries using indicators. Students write a paragraph comparing the indicators in two Asian countries. Extension Activity: Students compare the indicators for the two selected countries with the same indicators for Australia. Use Gapminder statistics to compare indicators for two Asian countries with those of Australia. Alternative activities: 1.Introduce students to variations in employment, education and health in Asian countries using images or books. 2. Working in pairs or small groups, students prepare a brief Fact Sheet on two Asian countries including government, employment, education and health. © Geography Teachers Association NSW
