Are you a Weed? There are certain misdeeds in the news headlines that leave us outraged and determined that justice should be done. How can we eradicate evil in the world in which we live? What should good people do about bad things? This is the question that lies behind today’s parable of the wheat and the weeds ….but Jesus’ answer to it might not be what we’d imagine. The parable tells of a master who sows good seed in his field, but in the night an enemy sows weeds in the same field so that the weeds and wheat are forced to grow alongside each other. The servants volunteer to pull up the weeds but the master advised them to let the weeds be, he will deal with them himself at harvest time. It seems that God’s response is not to immediately uproot evil but to leave it a while and for a very good reason. It was a typical Palestinian problem; the darnel weed looked very like wheat in its early stages, making it hard for the workers to eradicate. Similarly, just as it’s hard to tell the difference between darnel and wheat so it is not always as easy as we might think to tell the difference between good and evil. Have you ever known the person who shows a good and loving face to the world, but is a tyrant and a bully behind closed doors? Have you ever known the person who is always in church seemingly full of good deeds, but once off the church premises is a gossip or a bigot? Are we really able to recognise a good person? Have you ever written someone off as a liar or a thief only to hear years later that they have turned their life around? Perhaps telling good from evil is best left to God. The master in today’s parable does not fear that the weeds will ultimately damage the wheat. God’s solution is to give everyone a fair chance and make the final decision on Judgment Day. We might look in sadness at our world and shake our heads at the evil we see there, but Jesus’ answer is not to tear out the evil, but to offer the perpetrators a life line. Jesus is telling us that we must give others the same second chances we ourselves would like to be given…after all, what makes us so sure that we are the wheat? What if we were to look in the mirror and see nothing but weeds! 10TH JULY 2011 - SIXTEENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY Parish Church: Monday - Friday: 7:30am & 10:00am. Saturday: 10:00am. Are you a Weed?
There are certain misdeeds in the news headlines that leave us
outraged and determined that justice should be done. How can we
eradicate evil in the world in which we live? What should good
people do about bad things? This is the question that lies behind
today’s parable of the wheat and the weeds ….but Jesus’ answer
to it might not be what we’d imagine. The parable tells of a master who sows good seed in his field, but
in the night an enemy sows weeds in the same field so that the
weeds and wheat are forced to grow alongside each other. The
servants volunteer to pull up the weeds but the master advised
them to let the weeds be, he will deal with them himself at harvest
time. It seems that God’s response is not to immediately uproot
evil but to leave it a while and for a very good reason. It was a typical Palestinian problem; the darnel weed looked very
like wheat in its early stages, making it hard for the workers to
eradicate. Similarly, just as it’s hard to tell the difference between
darnel and wheat so it is not always as easy as we might think to
tell the difference between good and evil. Have you ever known
the person who shows a good and loving face to the world, but is a
tyrant and a bully behind closed doors? Have you ever known the
person who is always in church seemingly full of good deeds, but
once off the church premises is a gossip or a bigot? Are we really
able to recognise a good person? Have you ever written someone
off as a liar or a thief only to hear years later that they have turned
their life around? Perhaps telling good from evil is best left to God. The master in today’s parable does not fear that the weeds will
ultimately damage the wheat. God’s solution is to give everyone a
fair chance and make the final decision on Judgment Day. We
might look in sadness at our world and shake our heads at the evil
we see there, but Jesus’ answer is not to tear out the evil, but to
offer the perpetrators a life line. Jesus is telling us that we must
give others the same second chances we ourselves would like to
be given…after all, what makes us so sure that we are the wheat?

OUR PARI SH HAS OPENED A NEW SEW I NG PROGRAMME FOR THE ASYLUM SEEKERS, I N EMO
For some weeks now our parishioners have been
cont r ibut ing their old but funct ional sewing
machines for a worthy charitable exercise. The
aim is to help the ladies in the Asylum cent re
Emo, to gain some useful skills in sewing. Now, with 10 machines donated and updated so
far, the chaplain of the cent re, Fr Peter together
with some parishioners (one of whom has also
volunteered to be an inst ructor) has inaugurated
an ambit ious, well organised sewing programme
in the cent re. This took off the last two weeks
with a total number of 25 registered candidates.
Lessons are current ly held for 2 hours (10am-12nooon) every Wednesday and will cont inue in the near
future, the first batch of t heir students will organise a charit y exhibit ion wherein they will show everyone
what they have learnt by showcasing the dresses and other materials they have made. Meanwhile, anyone interested in volunteering to inst ruct them on Knit t ing is highly welcome. Likewise, as
the numbers of our students cont inue to increase, we solicit for more donat ions from anyone who st ill has
old-but - funct ional sewing machines or related mater ials (contact parish cent re 057-8621142 or Fr Peter
0877850862) . The beneficiar ies, some of whom are represented in the picture above, are very appreciat ive
for such a wonderful gesture from our parish. They cont inue to offer prayers for the generous donors. Thank
you everyone and let us cont inue to make the difference.

SAFEGUARDING IN KILDARE & LEIGHLIN DIOCESE
I n the wake of the Cloyne Report , it is important to reassure
people of how our diocese stands in regard to the safeguarding
of children.
Before shar ing that informat ion, I would like to acknowledge
once again that our Church has been scandalised and shamed
by what has been revealed this week. As always, we pray for all who have suffered and we
salute those who have so bravely uncovered the t ruth. I n regard to report ing allegat ions, Kildare & Leighlin Diocese has co-operated fully with the
statutory agencies - the HSE and the Gardai. We have also co-operated fully with the
independent monitor ing agency set up by the Church run by I an Elliot called the Nat ional Board
for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church (NBSCCC or ‘Nat ional Board’) . The HSE conducted an audit of our diocesan records in 2010. We have already publicised the
figures we subm it ted in that audit - that two K&L pr iests are out of m inist ry and that we had
received allegat ions against five deceased K&L pr iests. Since that t ime, we have received
allegat ions against three other deceased K&L pr iests. Like all dioceses, the ‘Nat ional Board’ will also audit us in due course. Again we will co-operate
fully. I n 2009, our diocese published a revised ‘policy and procedures’ document in regard to
safeguarding children in line with the nat ional ‘standards’ published by the ‘Nat ional Board’. Keeping to those standards, our diocese has recruited and t rained at least one designated person
in each of our 56 par ishes who is responsible for promot ing best pract ice and for dealing with
child protect ion concerns. The t raining is run in collaborat ion with the HSE. As well as the lay people t rained to serve as par ish designated persons, all our pr iests have
completed the same t raining course. Our diocese requires all diocesan and par ish staff, including
all pr iests and sem inarians, to apply for Garda vet t ing. We are commit ted to remaining vigilant and revising our policies and procedures as required.
I would like to conclude by thanking all those who are part of our safeguarding st ructures either
at diocesan or par ish level. from Monsignor Brendan Byrne – Diocesan Administrator 13 July 2011
