2014
In May 2014, Inclusive Employers will mark a significant milestone – we’ll be three years old. From a standing start we can celebrate a huge range of major achievements thanks to the commitment, innovation and creativity of our members.
Looking back, looking forward
We haven’t spent a huge amount of time so far showcasing our achievements, so this report details some key moments of the last year.
We have learnt how time flies and communicating initiatives and ideas early gives members time to plan so we have published our outline plan for the year ahead in this report.
Nationwide Coverage
A key focus of the year ahead is reaching across the country. We’ve been working in Manchester, Leeds, Bristol, Southampton, York and London this year but are really keen to work more with members in other towns and cities
and rural areas – where there are employees, there must be inclusive employers.
Three years old and here to stay - we’d like to express huge thanks to all our members and partners for their support in the last year and we look forward to working together more so in 2014/15 to continue our shared ambition of creating inclusive workplaces.
Thanks very much, Richard McKenna, Managing Director.

Membership
Our membership is now nearly 40 strong and working globally and locally across a range of sectors. Every organisation has faced different challenges and achieved some major culture changes. Over the past year we have welcomed new members including The Royal Navy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Telefonica, Mencap and Leicestershire Police. Our members share a desire to do things differently and a focused understanding that creating an inclusive culture will unlock the greatest commercial and organisational benefits.
We’ve identified that our members are building commercially appropriate and courageous strategies and are looking to do things differently. Our role is to work with members in developing these courageous strategies, generate new initiatives for organisations and the membership and reach out past the inclusion teams. This generates enthusiasm within organisations for a culture of thinking differently, doing things differently and making a difference.
Consult
We’ve been successful in tendering for some substantial pieces of work – for example the ongoing programme of work with Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the programme of work for the South Western Railway which has included policy review, focus group activities, internal communications strategies and implementation, launch of an inclusion steering group and work on the business cases for the different functions of the business.
Along with these projects there have been numerous pieces of consultancy with members ranging from developing their inclusion strategies, to advising on tendering, to reviewing and updating policies, to developing inclusive internal communications and inclusive brand strategies.
Training
Over the last twelve months we have delivered a broad range of learning interventions for numerous organisations.
Unconscious Bias training has been the main thrust with a range of interventions around it. Unconscious Bias for Recruiting Managers, An Introduction to Unconscious Bias, and the Bias, Behaviours and Barriers workshops have all been successfully run as bespoke programmes and as open courses.
This year we have also continued to deliver drama based inclusion training for a number of housing associations.
Our expertise in developing engaging drama based programmes clearly positions our commercial creative approach. As well as the drama based inclusion interventions for members, we’ve been commissioned to deliver inclusion focused team events for organisations including NHS Employers, Harrow School, Accenture, Hampshire Fire and Rescue and G4S.

Sustainable Inclusion Strategies
We’ve been working with some of our Foundation members on developing commercially appropriate Sustainable Inclusion Strategies – in simple terms, we identified that the economic climate was having an impact on focus and commitment to developing inclusive cultures but the more canny organisations were identifying that this was a massive opportunity to develop a sustainable inclusion approach that harnessed talent from across the organisation and empowered staff to take responsibility for the inclusion agenda.
We’ve looked at embedding inclusion into function strategies and are now seeing sustainable inclusion in action.
Building your Inclusive Brand
This is a major thrust of our work programme for 2014/15 as we see the inclusion impact on both our employer and consumer brands. What we recognise moving forward is that often the loudest voice can deliver the smallest outcome and the need to develop tactical and strategic brand and communications strategies – sometimes its about pulling people in to your inclusive brand rather than just being on loud broadcast mode.
Lunch and learn
Every year member organisations commission us to write and facilitate different inclusion workshops to get their staff enthused and engaged about inclusion. These sessions include topics such as: Introduction to Inclusion, Inclusive Leadership, Inclusive Communications, Inclusive Recruitment, Unconscious Bias, Sustainable Inclusion and a session on Group think called Consistency, Conformity and Creativity.
The workshops were so successful, we’ve made them available to all organisations in a lunch and learn format. These lunch and learn sessions last for around two hours, take place on your premises, and are for up to 20 delegates. We encourage delegates to come along, bring a snack and learn about inclusion in a fast paced workshop.

National Inclusion Week
In 2013, we launched National Inclusion Week and over 80 organisations demonstrated their commitment by taking part and hosting their own events, attending an event we hosted or by using the tools we developed for getting the inclusion dialogue going.
National Inclusion Week is an annual week of workplace activities and events that highlight the importance of inclusion across the UK. It is a unique opportunity to get connected to and engage with people who are passionate about inclusion in your workplace and beyond.
We were delighted that members shared their top tips for developing an inclusive culture on Youtube. In all 80 organisations took part and there was a real buzz about inclusion. You’ll find details of National Inclusion Week 2014 at:
www.nationalinclusionweek.co.uk
Learning Disabilities Work Experience Week
We worked in partnership with our member Mencap on Learning Disabilities Work Experience Week 2013. This was an opportunity for members to take part in a national programme which demonstrated to managers, teams and customers the benefits to be gained by opening up work opportunities to people with learning disabilities. It was a huge success and we plan to run the initiative again in 2014.
Members’ lounge
A new feature for 2014, this is an exclusive tool for staff in our member organisations. The live interactive hub is a place where members can debate, discuss, post invitations, videos and articles. If you see something interesting let us know, we love Tedtalks, staff network magazines and pictures from events. Sit back, relax and feel included in the members’ lounge.
