During inspection tour of AyeyawadyDivision, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace andDevelopment Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief(Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye gaveinstructions on systematic construction of roadsand bridges and preparedness measures to betaken against natural disasters after lookinginto construction and regional developmenttasks in the division.

On arrival at the Yazudaing Bridge No. 1construction project in MawlamyinegyunTownship, Vice-Senior General Maung Ayeurged officials to place emphasis on durabilityof roads and bridges, practise thrifty andminimize loss and wastage of constructionmaterials. He stressed the need to makenecessary preparations for taking preventiveand disaster preparedness measures.

Many rivers and creeks were naturalbarriers to the transport of AyeyawadyDivision in the past. Nowadays, the governmenthas built many roads and bridges in the region.More bridges and inter-township roads areunder construction to gain easy access to otherregions.

At present, a total of 10 roads are underconstruction so as to implement the Delta RegionRoad Network Development Project. Early thisyear, Yazudaing Bridge No. 2 was inauguratedon Maubin-Yaylegale-Shwetaunghmaw-Kyaikpi-Mawlamyinegyun Road. YazudaingBridge No. 1 is under construction. So far, theconstruction of the bridge has completed by 83per cent.

The southern region of Myanmar is blessedwith fertile land. As the region is located next tothe sea, plenty of food items such as meat, fish, salt and fishery products in addition to paddycan be produced. Not only food sufficiency butalso surplus of Myanmar contributes much tothe food sufficiency of the regional countries. Itis sure that due to emergence of new roads andbridges, Ayeyawady Division will be mostdeveloped region in the economic sector in thenear future.

A ‘face-book’ to measure pain in micePARIS, 10 May—

Scientists have for the firsttime created a sliding scaleof pain for mice based onfacial expressions, according to studypublished Sunday.

The so-called “mousegrimace scale” will speedup the development of

new analgesics forhumans, and could helpreduce unnecessarysuffering of mice andother animals inbiomedical research, theresearchers said. “Thereare also seriousimplications for theimprovement of

veterinary care,” saidJeffrey Mogil, a professorat McGill University inMontreal and the mainarchitect of the study.

Research on pain andhow to relieve it dependsheavily on the use ofrodents as stand-ins forhumans, so accuratemeasurement of painintensity in lab mice iscrucial.

Up to now, however,it was not known whetherdegrees of discomfort andsuffering in micecorrespond to spontaneousfacial responses, as is thecase for people.—Internet

Sugar plantation, native Hawaiiansin water battle

HAIKU, 10 May—LynScott’s family has fished inHonopou stream forcenturies and tapped itswater to farm the Hawaiianstaple taro on stone-linedterraces built by herancestors. Up the road,Leonard Pagan helps runirrigation systems atHawaii’s last sugarplantation. He’s the fourthgeneration of his family towork at HawaiianCommercial & Sugar Co,going back to his great-grandfather who emigratedfrom Puerto Rico.

Taro, fish and sugar areall central to Hawaii’s richhistory and identity. Tothrive in this corner of Maui, however, they must all benourished by the samesupply of water. This hastriggered an emotionalstruggle pitting one ofMaui’s biggest employers— the last representative

of Hawaii’s once-mighty“King Sugar” — againstNative Hawaiians fightingto hang on to neglectedancient traditions.

“They’re fighting fortheir way of life and we’refighting for ours,” saidWesley Bissen, a 30-yearveteran machinist at theplantation, HawaiianCommercial & Sugar Co.

The battle is now in it’sninth year, dating to 2001when the Native HawaiianLegal Corporation filed a

petition asking the state toreturn water to East Mauistreams. In 2008, the statewater commission orderedthe sugar plantation torestore water to 8 streams— including Honopou. ButScott says her family’s stillnot getting enough water tofish and farm taro like herancestors. They’re waitingfor the water commissionto respond to a complaintfiled by her lawyers.
