PRETERITE TENSE VERBSUse the preterite tense when you

are talking about actions or events that were completed in the past. Form the preterite tense of a regular –AR verb by removing –AR from the infinitive and attaching the appropriate ending.

-CAR, - GAR, -ZAR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE TENSE PG. 16

These verbs require a spelling change in the yo form of the preterite in order to maintain the original sound of the infinitive.

-CAR: buscar, explicar, sacar, tocar -GAR: apagar, colgar, jugar, llegar -ZAR: empezar

-IR STEM CHANGING VERBS PG. 17Stem changes that occur in the present tense for

–AR and –ER verbs do not occur in the preterite tense. However, -IR verbs that have stem changes in the present tense require a different stem change in the preterite tense. These changes occurs in the él, ella, Ud. form and the ellos, ellas, Uds. form.This stem change is shown in parentheses after infinitives in the book.

MORE SPELLING CHANGES

The verbs creer, leer, and oír have an i between two vowels which changes to a y.

i y These verbs also require additional accent marks to separate vowel sounds and to indicate how these words are pronounced.

This spelling change occurs in the Ud., él, ella, Uds., ellos, ellas forms.
