It somemes gets on my nerves as it endlessly goes on and on. First, it’s a cardinal, then a blue jay, a hawk, then other birds. It is pretending to be something it is not. I looked online about mockingbirds and found out that they can also mimic alarms, frogs, crickets, squirrels, and many other sounds. Recently, while I was outside listening to its numerous bird calls, I was struck by how we humans act the same way. Just like a mockingbird that pretends to be something it’s not, there are people in all churches who are Pretenders. Some are Pretend Chrisans, who are lost without Christ, but may be deacons, Sunday School teachers, sing in the choir, or hold leadership posions in the church. We may think that they’re Chrisans because they are nice and are regular church aenders (I was a Pretend Chrisan). Some are genuine Chrisans, who have accepted Christ at some point in their lives, but have strayed so far from Him that you’d never know by their acons that they’ve ever met Him. All churches have these Pretenders. They tell others about how much they love Jesus, but they fight for power, speak evil against their fellow church members, and are just plain mean spirited. The Bible is very clear about how Chrisans should act. One passage is Galaans 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, paence, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” As a minister’s wife, who has been a member of many churches, I’ve seen all kinds of Pretenders, and I’ve been one myself. I believe that for true believers, it is beer not to tell anyone that we are Chrisans if we can’t live up to what lost people perceive a Chrisan should be. People are watching us. What we say and do may influence someone for all eternity. Are our lives poinng others to Christ or away from Him? Let’s not be Pretenders, but let’s live in such a way that others can genuinely see Christ in us. Brenda Chase Grace Notes Volume 23 Tuesday, June 6, 2017 The Irritang Mockingbird
