tWtaMu fieldhouse - “the box”The West Texas A&M University volleyball team is accustomed to excellence in the WTAMU Fieldhouse, better known in the Texas Panhandle as “The Box.”

The Box is a facility Buffalo athletes and fans love. In stark contrast, opponents fear step-ping into the home of the Lady Buffs.

Built in 1951, The Box is home to the WTAMU volleyball team and formerly the men’s and women’s basketball teams. It has been the scene of many exciting moments and has seen a role in winning streaks for all three athletic programs. Success stems partially from the fans who crowd The Box and fill it to its 2,557 seat capacity.

Until a hard-fought, five-game loss to Angelo State University on Nov. 6, 1993, the WTAMU volleyball team had a 49-match winning streak in the Box dating back to Sept. 23, 1989. Counting four contests at the Amarillo Civic Center and two at the Tascosa Ac-

tivity Center, WTAMU had won a then-record NCAA Division II record of 55 home matches in a row, which now ranks fourth-best in all collegiate volleyball levels. That streak was later bested by a 57-match winning streak, occuring from 1996 to 1999. WTAMU had a 40-match home streak snapped in 2003.

“The Box is a great place to play,” former WTAMU assistant coach and player Carrie Burke Slechta said, who participated in each contest of the 55-match winning streak. “The Box has a certain aura about it that pushes us to another level at home. Brad Stark (WTAMU’s public address announcer) gets us going with his pre-game introductions and our crowd support keeps us going throughout the match.”

“Our crowd speaks for itself,” Lisa Thomason said moments after the Lady Buffs won the 1997 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Volleyball Tournament.

t In nine seasons as the head coach of the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, Tony Graystone has become one of the top coaches in the nation, as well as the most successful coach in Lady Buff Volleyball history.

The winningest coach in Lady Buff history, Graystone’s career record of 281 wins, 56 defeats also ranks among the nation’s best in terms of winning percentage (83.4 percent).

Last season, Graystone once again guided the vol-leyball program to an undefeated Lone Star Conference season with an unblemished 12-0 record and a return trip to the NCAA Elite Eight as the team registered an overall record of 36-8. In recognition of this, Graystone earned a fifth LSC Coach of the Year honor, as well as being named AVCA Southwest Regional Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.

The Lady Buffs finished atop the LSC Standings for the 13th time in program history and advanced to the NCAA-II Elite Eight for the tenth time in school history.

In 2006, Graystone led the volleyball program to the top of the Lone Star conference and into the hunt for a National Championship, as the Lady Buffs posted a 34-4 overall record. Along the way, Graystone collected LSC South Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in his career and brought home AVCA Southwest Regional Coach of the Year honors for the third time.

In 2004, Graystone became WTAMU’s all-time win-ningest coach with his 160th career win, passing Debbie Hendricks, under whom Graystone began his collegiate coaching career.

During the 2001 season, Graystone became the fast-est coach to reach 100 wins in NCAA history, reaching the milestone in only 106 matches. The next closest coach to reach 100 wins is Gil Dobie, who coached Boston College football for 32 years, and reached the milestone in 108 games.

After being promoted from the Lady Buffs’ assistant coaching position in January of 1999, he went 28 matches before his initial loss as a first-year head coach, shattering the previous mark of 13-0. Graystone went on to lead the Lady Buffs to a 36-2 overall record and the Elite Eight semifinals in 1999, falling two points short of the champi-onship match.

He led the team to a nearly identical 35-2 record in 2000, and took the Lady Buffs to the Elite Eight quarterfinal round. The team tied its school record with 28-straight wins during the season, with the streak being broken by Augustana College in the Elite Eight quarterfinal round. Graystone and the Lady Buffs also chiseled away at the school record for consecutive home-court wins, and established a new mark at 57 matches before the streak ended.

In 2001, Graystone guided the Lady Buffs to their ninth LSC title, and a fifth-consecutive undefeated divisional season, but for the first time, Graystone’s squad missed out on hosting the NCAA Division II Southwest Regional Tournament.

The 2002 season saw Graystone and WTAMU roll through the season, highlighted by a school-record 29-match winning streak. The Lady Buffs claimed their sixth-straight LSC South title and fourth-straight LSC Tournament title.. Graystone earned LSC South Division Coach of the Year and AVCA/Tachikara Southwest Region Coach of the Year honors. WTAMU hosted the Elite Eight for the first time since 1991, and held the top seed, but were upset in the quarterfinals.

While 2003’s 29-8 season had a downside in that it was the first time under Graystone that WTAMU didn’t reach the 30-win plateau, it had far more upsides in the form of milestones and achievements to outweigh any thoughts of considering it a “disappointing season.”

Graystone reached two milestones individually: 150 career wins, and steamrolling on to win number 160, assuming the title of “Winningest Head Coach in WTAMU History.”

He also led the Lady Buffs to a team milestone, set-ting a new NCAA-II record for consecutive victories over conference opponents, as the streak reached 77-straight before being snapped by Angelo State.

During the off-season, Graystone directs the WTAMU volleyball camps, one of the top-rated youth volleyball clinics in Texas.

Graystone, who served as the full-time assistant coach at WTAMU from 1997-98, has several years of coaching experience at the high school and club level. He played an important part in WTAMU’s 1997 national championship season, which concluded with a 37-3 record and a five-game thrilling victory over Barry University (Fla.).

In addition to being WTAMU’s assistant and head volleyball coach, Graystone served as the Amarillo Junior Olympic Volleyball Association’s program director from 1998 to 2000. His duties included leading the coaching staff, running instructional camps/practices and assisting in overall club management.

Before accepting the WTAMU position, Graystone was the head volleyball coach at Ballard High School in Louisville, Ky. Now in her third season as an assistant coach is Sarah (Butler) Carthel, one of the most accomplished players to ever take the court for the Lady Buffs.

Carthel enjoyed one of the most outstanding careers in NCAA Division II volleyball history as a student-athlete for West Texas A&M from 1997-1999.

As a freshman, the Amarillo, Texas native earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors while at the University of Texas. She then returned to the Texas Panhandle to lead WTAMU to a NCAA Division II national title as a sophomore in 1997.

Carthel was a two-time NCAA Division II Player of the Year for the Lady Buffs, earning the honor as a sophomore in 1997 and as a senior in 1999. A three-time American

Volleyball Coaches’ Association all-American selection, Carthel was also a two-time academic all-American pick. She was a three-time all-Region selection and Honda Award finalist for the top NCAA Division II Female Athlete in both 1997 and 1999.

After graduating from WTAMU in 2000, Carthel was a graduate assistant at Metro-politan State University in Denver, Colo., while she played for the United States National team.

She played professionally for the St. Louis Quest in the United States Professional Volleyball League, as well as also playing three seasons in a professional league in Puerto Rico (during the off-season). She also served on the coaching staff at Abilene Christian University from 2002-05.

In August 2005, she was voted to the NCAA Division II All-Time Volleyball team, one of only six players to earn the honor. She was inducted into the WTAMU Hall of Champions in 2007 and in the summer of 2008 she was selected for induction into the Lone Star Conference’s Hall of Honor.

She is married to West Texas A&M football defensive coordinator Colby Carthel and the couple resides in Canyon.

Kendra (Morgan) Potts returns for her fourth season with the Lady Buffs’ coaching staff after a stellar four-year career in a WTAMU uniform. Potts, an Amarillo, Texas native, was a Lady Buff standout from 2000-2003, and served as WTAMU’s graduate assistant after she completed her four-year degree.

Potts was a four-time All-LSC honoree and received the Freshman of the Year award, in addition to being a three-time AVCA All-American, four-time All-Southwest Region honoree, Southwest Region Freshman of the Year, LSC South Offensive Player of the Year and the LSC Tournament MVP in 2002, leading the Lady Buffs to their fourth-straight LSC championship and NCAA Tournament trip in Kendra’s tenure, as well two trips to the Elite Eight in 1999 and in

2002, which was hosted by WTAMU. Potts rewrote the LSC and WTAMU record books with 6,087 career assists, becoming just the 12th person in NCAA-II history with 6,000 career assists. She climbed to 10th on the NCAA-II career list and is third in career aver-age (12.58 apg). Potts recorded six triple-doubles during her senior campaign. The Lady Buffs went 129-16 (.890) in Potts’s four years as a Lady Buff, winning four LSC titles and advancing to the Elite Eight twice.

Since 2003, Potts has served as a coach at the club level in the Amarillo, Texas, area. She has guided each of her club teams to the Junior Olympic National tournament in each of her five seasons while coaching at that level. Potts utilizes her Marketing degree by assisting in the WTAMU athletics marketing department during the off-season.

Potts resides in Amarillo with her husband, Jim.
