The first step in finding ways of reducing a building’s energy consumption is to analyse where that energy is currently being used. With modern chillers becoming ever more energy efficient, fans stand out as a huge consumer of energy and therefore a prime target of attention when seeking to improve a building’s energy efficiency. It is known that the power consumption of building services and refrigeration can account for over 50% of total power consumption with buildings. Fan power consumption in commercial office buildings is responsible for around 30% of this figure and for up to 60% in buildings such as supermarkets. This presentation will cover some background information on fan power consumption and then detail the technical content of the new AS/NZS ISO 12759: 2013 Fans – Efficiency classification for fans, and introduce a code of practice that can be applied to define efficiency levels in air movements systems. • The scope and definition of fan or air movement systems • An overview of current legislations and Minimum Energy Performance Standards • An introduction to the testing and application of driven fans and its implications for efficiency. • The definition and calculation of fan efficiency • Fan efficiency grades • The implications of using speed control • Which fan systems are affected: ventilation systems, air-conditioning and refrigeration. Date: Tuesday 22 April 2014 Presenter: Dr Simon Bradwell – Managing Director, ebm-papst A&NZ Place: John Connell Auditorium, Engineers Australia, 21 Bedford Street, North Melbourne (see link) Time: 5:30 pm for a 6:00 pm start.
