Crafting Your Curls Exclusive withNaptural 85: Part 1! By Essence Gant

How long have you been natural, andwhat prompted your decision? I’ve been natural for four and a half yearsnow! It wasn’t until about my last year incollege that I really started owning who Iwas, and really started accepting what mademe unique! I was an art student, and I thinkbeing able to express myself in that support-ive environment really helped me figure outwho I was. I also enjoyed experimentingwith my appearance, which led me to getbored with my limp, straight hair, and wantto really amp up the volume and edge.

I started wearing my hair in its curlystate for the majority of the time and begandreading my next relaxer. My then boyfriend(now husband) was like “Why don’t you juststop relaxing your hair?” And I’d alwaysrespond with, “I can’t stop relaxing it, youdon’t understand!” But after a while I start-ed questioning my own mindset and beganwondering why exactly I couldn’t stop relax-ing! So one day, I just decided that I was nolonger going to relax my hair! I decided togive the natural route a try, and I haven’tlooked back since!

What prompted you to start vlogging?

Before I took the final plunge into being nat-ural, I wanted to know what the heck I wasgetting myself into; I did a lot of research inbooks and online about natural hair. What itlooks like, how to care for it, what productsto use, etc. Well, in my search for informa-tion, I came across YouTube! At that time, there were a handful of natural girls postinghair care tips, and I just fell in love! I lovedall of the different textures and stories; theyreally helped me see what I was in for. Sowhen I finally went natural, in about myninth month, I decided to take all of my hairprogress photos that I’d collected over themonths and create a “Natural Hair Journey”snapshot video. I had been so inspired bythese women, that it was my way of thank-ing them and showing them that their videoshad helped someone out there take theplunge.

How would you describe your curl pattern? My hair type is considered a 4a pattern witha little 4b pattern in the crown. So in its nat-urally curly state, meaning not stretched ormanipulated, my hair looks like really tight, small coils about the width of a pencil. But

my hair is also super thick, so there’s lots ofvolume, and because my curls are so tight, lots of shrinkage!

What are some hair health tips for thewarmer seasons?Extreme heat and direct sunlight can dry outthe hair, so invest in some cute, silky sum-mer scarves and hats—especially if you planto be outside all day! You’ll also find that it’sextremely humid and hot, making you wantto pull the hair off of your face to keep cool.Just try not to pull the hair back too tightly,or too often! The constant pulling of thestrands can cause stress to your roots, espe-cially at your edges, and can actually dam-age your hair, making it harder to growback.

It’s much better to loosely twist the hairback at your hairline and secure it withbobby pins into a low, loose bun or ponytail, rather than just brushing the hair back intoa tight pony or high bun. That’s a one-wayticket to no-edgesville!

How often do you shI cleanse once a mon

clay wash, which is ging. On the off weeks

What do you use to co-wash?What I use depends on how I’m, or my hair, is feeling. So if mor feels matted, I’ll use my homemade mayo conditioner. It’sand also contains a bit of protein for a quick pick-me-up! If mweakening, or feels like it’s getting tangles easily, I’ll opt for myogurt conditioner. It’s packed with lots of protein to strengthit detangles the hair really quickly. It also leaves the hair suping lazy, a new product in my regimen is my Trader Joe’s TeaConditioner. It’s pretty natural, and is an all-around go-to fordetangling quickly.

What three products do you use the most? The three products I use the most are the Terressentials Clayit’s really gentle, natural, and detangles my hair super-fast—

butter cream and water. I do 95% of my styling just using myI don’t really play in too many products. I also make a lot of from home. I have the recipes to all of them on my YouTube
