COMMUNICATION AND PHYSICAL SOLUTIONS TO HOAS - PASILA

CHALLENGE

CURRENT SITUATION Junailijankuja 5  

Based on:  

• Observations during the visits to the building  • Interviews we had among the tenants  

Two main problems were identified:

• Communication between HOAS and the tenants

• Physical conditions of the building itself

CHALLENGE

•  Enhance the commitment of the residents. (Participation, ownership)

•  Create a pleasant and functional environment

•  Design the proper tools for the communication between HOAS, third parties and the residents

•  Design social solutions that could guarantee a sustainable change.

SOLUTIONS

Process:

1. The chain of thought during the whole project has been not assuming anything but spotting actual problems by interviews and observations during the visits as mentioned before.  

2. Then brainstorming around the problem searching for feasible and sustainable solutions.

COMMUNICATION

4. Perception of a different treatment between exchange students and Finnish students.

VIRTUAL COMMUNICATION CHANNEL FACEBOOK as a "Virtual building" start-up • HOAS/PASILA Group for exchange students to communicate together and with/to HOAS  • Q&A and discussion areas  o HOAS takes an active role, commenting and posting frequently • Apartment repairs, happenings and other notifications  • Sub-page for recycling and/or selling furniture, dishes, blankets, bikes, appliances, books, clothes etc.  • Practicalities and out-of-nowhere requests  o "I need to lend a football", "I need someone to help me" etc • HOAS can add their applicants, or upcoming residents to the group and people can even use the page to search for suitable roommates and buy or ask for the things they need in the flat • This Facebook page will update it self to information boards on building entrances as well.

EXAMPLE

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS 1.  Apartments •  No heating during the winter  •  Reduced spaces, poor maintenance  

2. Common Rooms •  Lack of common and free-access to the room  •  Poor condition of the space

3. Laundry Room •  Too little washing machines, or no good service system around it  •  Creates stress and frustration to the tenants.  •  No drying room  

4. Garbage system •  Lack of information on recycling and waste disposal  •  Signs only in FinnishCreates a bad image for the whole building

Over all impersonal feeling.

PHYSICAL RENOVATIONS Four spaces to be renovated  

• HOAS and Demos Helsinki organized a design competition for the halls. The goal is to give a unique personality for each of the building´s sixteen living floors.

2. Common kitchen • Interior design and construction of a Finnish style kitchen-hangout space. (Wooden floors and panelling, finnish design furniture) • Terrace renovation

• Laundry room • Interior design of a chill-out space. Drying room.

3. Common room downstairs Multifunctional room: sports, social gatherings etc.
