TheAlbertaParty:Background

TheAlbertaPartyhasexistedinoneformoranothersince1985.In2010,it

undertookamajorrebuildingefforttofirmlyestablishitselfasamoderateand

inclusivepartyatthecentreofthepoliticalspectrum.Throughtheseeffortsthe

partyhasbeenattractingAlbertansfromacrossallpoliticallines.Insteadofbuildingpolicyattheboardlevel,thepartyrolledouttheBigListentoengageAlbertansinits

policydevelopment.BetweenJanuaryandNovember2010theAlbertaParty

engagedoverathousandAlbertansatsmallmeetingsinlivingrooms,coffeeshops

andcommunityhallsacrosstheprovince.

InNovember2010therenewedAlbertaPartyhelditsfirstpolicyconventioninRedDeerwhereitadopteditsfirstpolicyplatformdevelopedoutoftheBigListen.Atthe

convention,thepartyfocusedonfivekeypolicyareas:Economy,HealthCare,

Education,Environment,andDemocraticRenewal.TheAlbertaParty'spolicy

developmentisongoing.Currentlyover100volunteersareworkingtorefinethe

party’splatform,anddeveloppolicyinotherkeyareas(e.g.MunicipalAffairs)

throughcontinuedBigListenengagement.

TheAlbertaPartywillhostitsLeadershipConventioninEdmontononMay28th,

2011.

LiberalCaucustositasanIndependentMLAintheLegislature.HislastpositionswiththeOfficialOppositionwereascriticfortheDepartmentsofEnergy,Housing&

UrbanAffairsandMunicipalAffairs.Dave’sworkontheOpposition’sHousing&UrbanAffairspolicyof2007ledthegovernmenttoimplementseveralprogramsin

accordancewithhisplan,anddrasticallychangedthewaytheprovinceviews

homelessness.HeiscurrentlyamemberoftheStandingPolicyCommitteeontheEconomy,theStandingPolicyCommitteeonCommunityServices,andtheStanding

PolicyCommitteeforPrivilegesandElections,StandingOrdersandPrinting.

Dave’sinvolvementinCalgary’sUrbanParksProjectRiverValleysMasterPlanand

positionasthefoundingchairoftheSouthlandNaturalParkSocietyresultedintheprotectionofthenaturalareafromdevelopment.Hehasbeenalongtime

stewardshipvolunteerattheInglewoodBirdSanctuary-oneofhisfavouritespots

inthecity.Daveisanavidbirderandgardener,andenjoysspendingtimewithhis

REMARKS–DAVETAYLOR

Ninemonthsago,IannouncedmydecisiontositastheIndependentMLAfor

Calgary-Currie.Isaidatthetimethatmyconstituentshadelectedmetovigorouslyrepresentthem,tobeastrongvoiceandacredibleadvocate.AndIhadcometothe

conclusionthatIcoulddoamoreeffectivejobofthatasanIndependentratherthan

remainingwhereIhadbeen.

IwasutterlyastoundedatthesupportIreceivedfrommyconstituents.Itwas

overwhelming.

IsaidwhenIwentIndependentthatIbelievethemajorityofAlbertanswant

sensible,moderate,pragmaticsolutionsthatarefiscallyresponsible,socially

progressive,andthatputAlbertansfirst.AndI’vetriedtostaytruetothat.

Ihaveconsultedwidelyinthelastninemonths,andhere’swhatelseI’velearned:

WeAlbertansarealsohungryforsomethingmore.Somethingmorethanabudget

tobalance,ahospitalwaittimetoshorten,aquotatofilloradepartmentto

reorganize.Sure,itwouldbeniceifwehadagovernmentthatcouldmanagetodoeventhatmuch.Butweyearnforagoaltoshootfor,adreamtoshare–becausewe

areAlbertans,andwehavetheconfidencetoknowthatwecoulddothatifwewant.

Sohere’swhyI’mjoiningtheAlbertaPartytoday–becauseunlikealltheother

parties,it’saplaceofhopeandpossibility,justlikethecityandtheprovinceIchosetocallhome.Thethreeexistingoppositionpartiesarepreoccupiedwithpointing

outwhat’swrong,criticizing,andtearingdown.ThepeopleoftheAlbertaPartyare

farmoreexcitedaboutwhatwecouldbuildtogether.

TheAlbertaPartyisnew--barelyontheradar.Wehavenowheretogobutup.But

ratherthangripingaboutwhatis,orisnot,theAlbertaPartyisfocusedonwhat

couldbe.That’stheteamIwanttoworkwith.

IamdelightedtoannounceandwelcomeourfirstAlbertaPartyMLA,DaveTaylor.

Theprocessleadinguptothishistoricannouncementhasbeenextensiveandverythoughtful,withtheultimatedecisionlyinginthehandsofthelocalboardofthe

Calgary-Currieconstituency.Forseveralmonths,theAlbertaPartyhasbeenin

conversationwithDavetoseewhetherwesharedvaluesandaspirationsforthis

greatprovince.Itisveryclearthatwedo.

Weshareabeliefthatgovernmentneedstobemorethansimply“bythepeople,for

thepeople,ofthepeople”,itmustalsobeWITHthepeople.DaveisanMLAwho

believesinservinghisconstituentsfirstandforemost,aheadofanyparty,andwe

applaudthis.Almostexactlyoneyearago,hecreatedawaveofexcitementinthe

energyindustryandamongAlbertanswhenhereleasedhisbreakthroughoiland

gaspolicy,offeringwin-winsolutionsforboththeindustryandthepeopleofAlberta.LikeDave,theAlbertaPartyknowsthateconomicprosperityand

responsibleresourcedevelopmentmustgohandinhandwithenvironmentalstewardship.Webothfavourabalancedfiscalapproach.Webothsupport

investmentstoimprovethequalityoflifeforallAlbertans.Weshareacommitment

tostrongdemocraticprocesses,transparency,resistingexcessivecentralizationofauthorityintheCabinetandworkingacrosspartylinestofindbettersolutions.

Aboveall,webelievethatthevoiceofAlbertansmustberestoredtogovernment.

TheAlbertaPartywillnowtakeitsplaceINSIDEtheLegislature,withthismove,bringthevoicesofthousandsofAlbertanswithus.Ourfreshapproachtopolitics

hasbeenturningheadsandourpartyisgaininggreatmomentum.Weareattracting

peopleacrossallpoliticallines.Weareengagingthedisengaged.Weareforginga

newmoderate,inclusivewayforwardforourprovince.HavingDaveTaylorjoinus

isanimportantmomentfortheAlbertaParty.HeisourfirstMLA,buthecertainly

won’tbeourlast.
