    5 minutes with...Sealey Brandt

    All thingsblack and white

Join The Finderas we take a sneak peek into the world of SEALEY BRANDT, a woman who has devotedmost of her life to capturing and creating images everything from vast landscapes to the innocence ofa growing child all on film.

Aussie photographer, wife andmother, Sealey Brandt has livedin Singapore, on and off, for 20 yearsnow. She is well-known amongst theexpatriate community having capturedaward winning images of children intheir developing years. She is a giftedand passionate photographer who often

exhibits, both locally and on the worldstage, and has devoted a substantialopus of her work to perfecting the art ofblack and white still photography, whichshe continues to capture on film to thisday. She is a purist when it comes tocreating resonating images and aims tocapture the essence of each subject sheencounters be it a vast landscape ora portrait (in her somewhat distinctive

style) of children, families and esteemedindividuals.

Photography is in my blood. Mydarling dad was the king of advertisingphotography and had a hugely successfulstudio in Melbourne Australia. I g rew upsurrounded by incredibly talented people:photographers, assistants, set designers,make-up artists, models, stylists, musiccomposers, you name it. Brian Brandt andAssociates and CPL, based in MelbourneAustralia, employed over 100 peoplewhen dad was at the helm. I grew up inthis wonderful ly creative environmentof constant stimulation. I even hadaccess to a darkroom at home at theage of 10, and thinking back now,

I started taking pictures at aroundthree years of age. I have neverstopped taking pictures, andexpect I never wil l.

Sealey arrived in Singaporein 1994 to join Batey AdsinAnn Siang Hill as an artbuyer. Her responsibilitywas to get the advertisingcampaign shot on time andin budget a dream job,and ideally suited to Sealey, having worked in Australiain the same capacity. Thenin 1997 Sealey was offereda freelance photography job,too good to refuse, which

took her to 13 countriesthroughout Asia shootingportraits for a Hong KongBank. She has never lookedback. But the true turningpoint in her career camewhen Sealey came acrossan incredible set of 10large portraits that herfather Brian had taken ofher when she was three.I decided to leave theworld of advertisingand solely photographchildren and familiesin the hope of havingthe opportunity to

dad gave me beautiful spontaneousimages. Ive now photographed over 1000families th roughout Singapore, HongKong, Shanghai, NYC and Australia andproduced a coffee table book currentlyavailable in Kinokuniya Book Store.

My love for photography has takenme all over the world living in far awayand interesting places including Paris,Lyon, USA, London and Venezuela.

I recently spent a month horsebackriding across Mongolia which was themost incredible experience of my life.We rode eight hours a day, living offthe land in tents, cooking on camp fi reswhile being inspired by a l ife of 5,000years ago following the path of GenghisKhan. I have always loved the outdoorsand the unknown. I live for uniqueexperiences and visual st imulation, and Im always up for a challenge.Nepal and Cambodia are other favouritecountries I have explored and capturedon film, both full of surprises andwonderful people.

This month Sealey has been invitedto exhibit her photographic work at

the Milan Photo Fair in Milan, Italy May22-25. She will curate her very own showamongst 150 other invited photographersfrom across Europe while being the onlyphotographer from Asia to exhibit at thisprestigious event. I will be showing myMongolia series and also my childrenswork, Cambodia and Nepal images. Thisis a great honour for me and somethingthat has come at a time in my life, andcareer, where things really couldnt getany better. My work to date has been shoton film and printed by hand.

So what is it that makes Sealey feelshes the luckiest girl in the world? To find my passion, make it happen, livein this interesting diverse country and to

top it off, to live in a colonial black andwhite house, my studio near my homeis also in a black and white at Wessex, and until today I only shoot in blackand white. My son Cooper is at Tangl inTrust School and my wonderful husbandDillon, whom I met here in 1996, is myrock and teacher and has a lot of patience.Remy our wonderful helper has been apart of our family for 11 years and holdsit all together. She is soul to the earth anda huge support, whom without my workcould not exist. And as a par ting thoughtin the words of Sealey Brandt herself,Life moves fast so capture it on film andprint them beautifully so they last.
