By the time you are reading this 2018 is just around the corner. Over the last ten years the cost of new equipment has risen substantially and disproportion- ate to the modest rise in rates for the regions taxi’s cranes. Nevertheless, many of our customers have updated for one of a multitude of reasons including sheltering the taxable income from a busy year, costly down time with older units, and in many cases the negative unplanned cash flow effects of repairs as their units get older. New tires alone for an 8x4 HTC could run you close to $10,000. If you were to get your unit professional painted you might be out $30,000 plus two months without use while waiting for the job to be completed. This says nothing about updating an LMI or repacking a tele- scope cylinder. So what are you to do if the payment on new is out of reach and you don’t want to buy someone else’s problem? OSHA Issues Proposed Rule to Extend Compliance Deadline for Crane Operator Certification RequirementsThe Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on August 31st to extend the employer’s responsibility to ensure crane operator competency and enforcement for crane operator certifica-tion to November 10, 2018. OSHA issued a final rule in September 2014, extending the deadline by three years for crane operator certification re-quirements in the Cranes and Derricks in Construction standard. The final rule also extended by three years the employ-er’s responsibility to ensure that crane operators are competent to operate a crane safely. The agency is now proposing an extension of the enforcement date to address stakeholder concerns over the operator certification requirements in the Cranes and Derricks in Construction standard.

National Crane Spotlight

Compact 33 Ton on KenworthComing to CRWWith certain customer demand in the tree service indus-try calling for tighter wheelbase, better turn radius, and shorter overall lengths, Wood’s CRW is excited to an-nounce the addition of the Kenworth T-800 to our Boom Truck inventory. Due to arrive in the first few weeks of November, they will be mounted under the 33-Ton Na-tional Crane 14127A and sporting an impressive wheel-base of only 254” with overall length of 38’ 5”. And the stronger front and rear axles totaling 68,000 lbs GVWR will make for a sturdier ride.

No Clutch, No ProblemArriving in October, the National Crane 30-ton NBT30/ Freightliner 114SD will be in stock with your choice of Allison 4500 RDS Fully Automatic Transmission or Eaton Fuller RTO 8LL Standard Transmission. Customer con-cerns regarding the potential expense for new clutches prompted CRW to create a solution for the problem of multiple drivers / operators wearing out clutches on rental and purchased boom trucks. Both units will offer the same Detroit DD13 450HP Engine.

CRW Technicians Receive Link-Belt Boom Inspection TrainingWood’s CRW Corp is continually striving to provide top notch, highly trained technicians to perform service and repair on our customer units. Recently, CRW hosted Link-Belt to our North Oxford, MA facility to provide boom inspection training to mul-tiple technicians from all branches. Prior to this training, Link-Belt provided a list of required equipment to effectively perform inspections on multiple types of booms. This equipment was purchased and provided to our technical staff.

The training class was held in June of this year and covered proper in-spection processes on a multitude of different style booms. The training also covered what information is required for the factory to determine if a boom can be repaired or needs to be replaced. This type

of inspection training also assists our staff in performing thorough OSHA inspections and accident investigations. A total of seven CRW technicians attended the class and all received completion certificates at the end of the very successful training session.

Based in Reading, Pennsylvania, I.B. Dickinson & Sons, Inc. has been offering crane rental service since 1948. They have three locations, including Reading, Allentown and Harrisburg, to serve their customers in central and eastern PA and New Jersey. Their fleet consists of hydraulic truck and all terrain cranes, con-ventional crawler cranes and rough terrain cranes – all with qualified and certified operators.

The most recent addition to their fleet was the pur-chase of a Link-Belt HTC86110 from CRW. Jeremy Dickinson, Vice President and son of the owner, Donald Dickinson, said “We like the long boom the HTC86110 provides. It works great for tower work.” Their Link-Belt fleet also consists of a 218HSL, three RTC8050IIs, an RTC8075XLI, an ATC3200 and an ATC3250.

I.B. Dickinson, Inc. offers lift planning services, ware-housing and hauling services. They can be reached at 610-376-6367.

Customer Partner ProfilesWinkler Crane Adds New 150 Ton Rough Terrain to FleetWinkler Crane, Inc. of Truro, Massachusetts, recently added the largest rough terrain in New England to its fleet of mobile cranes. With 195’ of main boom and 55’ of hydraulic offset fly, the three axle unit offers a total tip height with inserts of 311’.

Company President, Mike Winkler, is very excited about the flexibility of his new crane. “We have had great success with our three axle 100-ton unit. The carrier on the new 150 is virtually identical so we know it’s easy to move, easy to set up and simple to operate. This will allow us to

compete with the AT’s of similar capacity but with the ability to fit into a smaller foot print. We can mobilize with three loads and have boom in the air in less than an hour and we can move with full counterweight once on site. It will also be a more affordable option for my customers vs. an AT.” For more information on the RTC80150II, contact Mike Winkler at 508-737-4696.

CRW Employee Profiles

Link-Belt 10,000th Boom

Jeffery “Jeff” Duchesne comes to us from Stevenson Equipment, where he was a field mechanic for nine years. Jeff has experience working on cranes, excavators, pavers and other construction equipment. When he’s not pulling wrenches at our Penn-sylvania service facility, he enjoys riding his Harley with his fiancé, Mary-Ellen, and going for morning drives with his chocolate lab, Dutch. He gets his greatest joy from spending time with his family. Jeff is a father of three girls -- Ashley, Rebecca and Kimberly.

Nearly nine years after beginning the journey of producing its own formed boom, Link-Belt Cranes produced its 10,000th boom in May that was installed on a 140-ton TCC-1400 telescopic crawler crane. After purchasing formed boom sections from an overseas supplier for several years, Link-Belt made the decision to fabricate its own boom sections for economic and delivery reasons. A small team of engineers and technicians developed all the processes required to cut materials, precision form the plates, weld the shell pieces together, inspect, and complete the weldment to the highest quality. The team specified and/or designed the cutting, bending, welding, inspection, and material handling production equipment.

The majority of the fabrication of this production equipment was done in-house by truly talented fabricators and weld-ers. Automated controls and computer programs were also developed in-house to sup-port the flow of the fabrication process, to ensure repeatabil-ity and quality, and to aid the operators of the equipment.

In 2014, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Link-Belt Cranes’ parent-company, named Link-Belt the Gold Prize Winner of its President’s Award in the area of quality and innovation for the equipment designed and built in house that pro-

duce high quality boom sections. This project took years of research, design, and fabrication with a cross functional team dedicated to produce a high quality manufacturing process second to none in the crane business.
