I am already missing Garrison Keillor. He seemed to be one of the only commentators on everyday American life who still saw religion as a force to be reckoned with. He also had an almost medieval way of marking the calendar. Many of his Lake Woebegone monologues use a scripture reading from the shared lectionary as a starting point, be it Good Shepherd Sunday, All Hallows Eve (i.e. Halloween), Reformation Day, or even today’s reading of the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin and the Prodigal Son. Growing up Catholic before Vatican II was really a time dominated and marked by feast days. Of course, there was the negative implication that if you missed a holy day, off to hell you would go, but at the same time there were teaching moments within the celebrations. Before the slasher movies of the 60’s and 70’s, every Catholic school child knew the exquisite tortures of Sts. Agatha, Agnes Barbara, Decla, Sebastian and even St. Lawrence’s famous quip - “turn me over I’m done”, all done for the faith. We knew that Mary - (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) was given the gift of being born without original sin so that when God asked her to be the mother of Jesus she could give an unequivocal yes on behalf of all humanity. We knew her ascension into heaven (the feast of the Assumption) was a prototype of our own resurrection. All Hallows Eve and All Saints were celebrations of that Resurrection possibility, even as All Souls reminded us of our connection with the dead and our continued need for forgiveness. I know its almost expected as Catholic clergy to apologize for a Catholic’s biblical illiteracy, especially in pre-Vatican times, but since then that is due more to our laziness than church practice. But even without a stress on reading the Bible, we hear it each Sunday at mass, and I still have my Bible history text from 5th grade that pretty much covers all the biblical stories that are not too ‘hot’ to repeat in decent company - Bathsheba et al. I am not pleading for a return to the 50’s, 40’s or 30’s, but I do sometimes find it amusing how we are calling people back to a more simple life; how we admire native peoples who live close to the earth when we do not even attempt to rehabilitate our own celebrations connected to the seasons. I sometimes think that what our ultra-conservative confreres are attempting to recapture with all their rules, is that sense of the holiness of all things, of a mystical year. Sadly they mainly scare people. The question is, “How do we make the world seem it’s an inch away from God?” (By the way, the readings are telling us to forgive radically from the heart, and God thinks we are valuable.) Presider: Fr. Jim DeBruycker "We Welcome You Wherever You Are On Your Journey!...There's no place like home!" Enter, rejoice and come in to this place we call home. After the long, hot summer we are all together again and will be welcomed with a special pre-mass presentation by some of our SJA staff members and musicians. The Sunday Morning Registration and Information Office is located in the Parish Center. In the office you may register to become a SJA parishioner, get program information, sign up for a program, and register to volunteer. The office is open after both of our Sunday morning liturgies.
