PRESIDENT’SLETTERA Message from Our Chairman and President
Over the past year, we continued to expand our services to homeless and low income individuals and families in Berks County and beyond. In September 2014, the Veteran’s Administration approved our Supportive Services for Veteran Families grant renewal request to provide homeless prevention and rapid rehousing services in Berks, Schuylkill and Lancaster counties. This grant provides intensive case management, counseling, and temporary financial assistance to Veterans and their families who struggle to remain in their homes. In the cases where financial remediation is not enough they are placed in the emergency shelter with the goal of stabilizing their situation.
In December 2014, over 400 people joined us for our 30th Anniversary Celebration at the Crowne Plaza. It was a wonderful evening filled with remembrances from the past as well as outlining our plans for the future.
Our relationship with the St. Vincent De Paul Society (SVDP) of Lane County, Oregon continued throughout the year as they helped us prepare for the opening of our retail store, OppShop, in July 2015. With our online retail business on eBay, Amazon and Half.com selling clothing, books, and household items to buyers from around the country, we are filled with optimism for continued growth that will support our agency and the community.
In June 2015 we celebrated our 18th Annual Golf Tournament at the Berkshire Country Club and in April 2015 we celebrated our 13th Annual Souper Bowl at the Crown Plaza. Both events raised needed funds for Opportunity House.
Of course, none of this would be possible without your support. Thank you to all of our volunteers, who take time out of their busy lives to lend a hand to help those less fortunate. As we completed our 30th year of sheltering the homeless, a special thanks to our cooking groups, who continue to provide meals every day to the men, women, and children living in the shelter.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission to improve the quality of life for families and adults who face various obstacles to independence, and support their efforts to maintain and achieve self sufficiency. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to thank all of Opportunity House’s employees, donors, supporters, and volunteers. Thanks to you, we are making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
Best regards,
Ginny Hand Modesto FiumeChair, Board of Directors President
