Alumni Hit a Home Run with Farm Show Breakfasts

Recently, two significant events took place that greatly assist Ag Leadership in capturing its vision of “being a catalyst for a vibrant agricultural community.” The first happened on Feb. 7 in the north state where the Colusa Farm Show Breakfast committee once again did a fantastic job of bringing in more than 450 people for the benefit of California State University, Chico and the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation. Through the guidance of a committee, which included a wide array of alumni such as Lewis Bair (33), Terry Bressler (30), Bill Carriere (27), Jack Coots (27), Holly Dawley (38), John Weiler (22), Les Heringer (13), Sarah DeForest (39), Mark Kimmelshue (28), Sam Nevis (32) along with industry and CALF representatives Christie Capik, Colleen Cecil, Tom Martin, Sharowynn Wilson, Justin Nunes, Dr. Charlie Crabb and Emily Lazzerini, this breakfast continues to be an overwhelming success for the 16th consecutive year. Not only were the meal, program and fellowship top notch, the crowd was treated to an excellent and captivating talk from Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea, on leadership as it related to the Oroville Dam spillway disaster last year.

Then on Feb. 15, the World Ag Expo Breakfast presented its 24th edition in Tulare where approximately 900 individuals gathered at dawn for the benefit of Ag Leadership. This year

more than 40 committee members, led by chairman John Schaap (39), demonstrated their leadership skills in securing a well-known and respected replacement for the keynote speaker who had to cancel a day prior to the event due to a family emergency. Dr. Victor Davis Hansen stepped in to provide a thought provoking review of current events, both in-state and nationally. Ag Leadership alumnus Shannon Douglass (46) performed a marvelous job as the master of ceremonies. In addition, thanks to the coordination orchestrated by Buckman-Mitchell Insurance and the thirteen insurance company benefactors led by platinum sponsor The Zenith, the foundation was presented with a check for $115,000—the highest total ever from this event.

These occasions once again happened due to the efforts and leadership exhibited by Ag Leadership alumni. We at the foundation are very appreciative of all of their hard work and the hours they spent in putting together these exceptional experiences. They truly show that this program unquestionably does “grow leaders who make a difference!” Thank you!

RSVP to Emily Lazzerini: [email protected] or 831-585-1030.

Volunteers Needed This reception is a success because of our wonderful alumni volunteers! Here are a couple of ways you can help:

Transport commodities from farther away regions so that we accurately represent all California's commodities.

Setup the commodities/products prior to the event and/or load-out all of the commodities to the River City Food Bank truck after the event.

Donations Needed We rely on commodity donations to showcase the diversity of goods produced in California. Food products are donated to the River City Food Bank for families in need. Plant products are donated to local high school agriculture programs to use on their school farms. Here's what we're looking for:

One bushel of commodity/product (each commodity is presented in 12” x 18” display crates)

Plant materials for decoration Beer donations (bottle only)

If you are unable to attend the event but would like to donate items, we can accept shipped products of both perishable and non-perishable items. Please contact the CALF office for more information.

Invite Guests Help with recruitment for future classes by inviting individuals who you think would make great candidates for the program.
