Morgan Center Holds Drug Awareness Event LCCC’s Northern Tier Sociology Club coordinated a drug awareness event on March 7 at the Morgan Center that

featured Tamaqua native Lisa Scheller who shared her journey with drug addiction in a presentation entitled “It Can Happen to Anyone.” Scheller, founder and benefactor of Hope & Coffee in Tamaqua, is president and CEO of Silberline Manufacturing Co. The evening also included the showing of the film “Beautiful Boy.”

LCCC Hosts Redistricting Town Hall The college served as a viewing location for Pennsylvania’s first-ever Redistricting Town Hall on Feb. 21 on the

Schnecksville campus. The town hall originated from Muhlenberg College and initiated a community conversation about the effects of redistricting at the local and state level. Expert panelists discussed Pennsylvania’s recent redistricting and the actions that preceded the most recent legal battles.

Panelists included representatives from Fair Districts PA, county commissioners, the Pennsylvania League of Women Voters, state and U.S. legislators and political science faculty. The broadcast at LCCC was coordinated by the Political Science department. Mary Erdman, member of the Lehigh Valley League for Women Voters and Fair Districts PA, addressed the LCCC audience.

Decades of partisan efforts led to Pennsylvania’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading offenders of biased districting practices, or gerrymandering. The state’s legislative districts have been in the national spotlight regarding this issue for the past several years. Recently, Republican-drawn districts were the basis for a lawsuit that eventually reached the United States Supreme Court.

Women’s Softball Season Opens LCCC’s 2019 softball team will open up its season where it finished

it in 2018. The NJCAA preseason rankings put the Cougars at sixth in the country. Two players, Mackenzie Guzy and Shannon Gallagher, were also named preseason All American by Fast Pitch News.

The Cougars will open their season at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., on March 10.

LCCC Food Pantry Adds Hours of Operation The Cougar Cabinet food pantry is offering additional hours of operation for spring 2019. The pantry will be open for

students to receive food items every Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m. In addition, it will be open for morning hours from 10 a.m. to noon on the following Wednesdays: March 27 and April 24. These dates/times are the same for both the Allentown and Schnecksville locations.

Business Enterprise Center Changes its Name LCCC’s Business Enterprise Center is pleased to announce its name change to the Center for Entrepreneurship &

Innovation. The program serves Allentown, Jim Thorpe, Schnecksville and Tamaqua. The CEI’s interdisciplinary focus will support expanding offerings to students, as well as position the center as a regional leader in training entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs. The CEI instills the characteristics of employability through entrepreneurial programming, and provides exposure to the necessary soft skills that provide a competitive advantage in the workforce. For more information, visit the center’s webpage at www.lccc.edu/cei.

Mark Your Calendar for the Student ePortfolio Showcase LCCC students will present their ePortfolios during a Showcase and

Awards event on Friday, March 22, at 1 p.m. in the Community Services Center.

The ePortfolios give students the opportunity to share their achievements and goals in a digital format. The website-like ePortfolio features examples of students’ work, their resume, and a list of their personal and career goals. During the showcase, a panel of judges will select the top ePortfolios and invite those students to give a short presentation of their work. The winners are then selected from that presentation.

Last year’s winners, pictured at left, were Dane Santa, first place; Alicia Durst, second place; and Cathryn Seibert, third place.
