Since I will be out of the country and not returning until October 10, I decided to get a newsletter out early for October since it will be too late to get it out after I return. Since I have never missed an issue in the 8 years I have been doing the Newsletter, I don’t want to break my record! This one will be somewhat abbrevi- ated, though. The Albuquerque International Balloon Festival is just about here. In fact, it starts this Saturday morning, October 1st and runs through Sunday, October 9th. I hope our club has a very successful event. We will again, be located at the north side of Balloon Fiesta Park, near gate 3, next to the very large craft tent. Co- ordinator John Scott, KF5ROL, still has some openings. If you can make the time and sign up with John, you will be rewarded with a free parking pass and a free admission. Together, these passes are worth $20 a day. The work is easy. Meet and greet the public, play ham radio, talk up our great hobby and club, than go play at the Festival! Such a deal!! If you can spare a little time, Please give John a call at his home, 839- 7035, or his cell, 228-0023. Please consider contributing a couple hours of your time during this important Ham Radio community event. Since I was sick for our September meeting, the program I was to present on IRLP was postponed until this months meeting. So, If you could not make the last meeting, you have another chance to learn a little about IRLP. It certainly helps when one can talk during a presentation. I was hoping my bout with laryngitis would ease up so I could present my program. But, alas, it did not. I regret not being here to help out with Balloon Fiesta this year, but Cher and I will be celebrating our 50th anniversary, which is actually on the 9th. It will be our last day of our trip and we will be flying back home from Amsterdam on the 10th. Looking forward to seeing you all at the October meeting. Now that summer is officially over, I look to see some good attendance at our upcoming meetings! Best 73! Jerry K6LIE

President’s Corner - Jerry Aceto K6LIE

Greetings!

Since I will be out of the country and not returning until October 10, I decided to get a newsletter out early for October since it will be too late to get it out after I return. Since I have never missed an issue in the 8 years I have been doing the Newsletter, I don’t want to break my record! This one will be somewhat abbrevi-ated, though.

OCTOBER PROGRAM Jerry Aceto K6LIE

I will be presenting a program on IRLP (Internet Ra dio Link-ing Project). What it is and how it works. Also, a little history on how it all got started. The IRLP system is somewhat unique, in that it does not need a computer for you to access the system. Every thing is done within the repeater or simplex station. All yo u need is a radio with a touch tone pad. No other external equi pment is needed by you, the user. I hope to demonstrate the IRLP system to show how s imple it is to access and operate. That way, you will be abl e to see just how simple it is to use.

CLUB DUES

Just a reminder to please maintain your yearly club dues. Remember, our club’s only source of income is through our members main-taining club dues. Some folks seem to think this is a one time, lifetime payment when in reality, it is a yearly payment. I know it can easily be overlooked. If you desire to maintain your club mem-bership, please make a note of when you joined, as that will always be your renewal date. If you can’t remember when your dues are due, simply contact a club officer or the treasurer. We all have a current copy of the roster and can tell you when you are due.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

We would like to extend a GREAT BIG HDARC WELCOME to our newest members:

Alan Deme W5APF Chris Petroff W5CBP Maria Tkach KE5DEI Mark Medrud KG5IFR

We hope you will have fun learning and experi-encing all that our great hobby of Amateur Ra-dio has to offer.

PAYING YOUR CLUB DUES IS NOW EASIER THAN EVER!

We have streamlined our club dues paying procedures. It now can be all done on line. Of course, if you wish to still pay by mail, that option is still open to you. Here is the new procedure: - Bring up our website at www.nm5hd.com. - set your cursor on Member Services. A drop down menu will appear. The first selec-tion will be Membership Information . Select membership information. - On this page, you will find the current annual dues schedule. Look down the page to the two red selections, one to submit your membership application electronically and one that allows you to bring up an application if you chose to pay your dues by check and want to mail in your application and payment. In either case, a form will appear which can be filled out on line. We would prefer that you pay your dues electronically. That way, after filling out the form, simply hit the Submit button at the bottom of the form. Also, a link to the clubs PayPal account also appears on the Membership Infor-mation page. Sending your dues electronically and paying via PayPal is very easy and we have your information instantly when the Submit button is used. If you chose to pay by mail, fill in the form provided for non-electronic submission on line, print it and send it along with your check to the address at the bottom of the form. We require a new form be filled out, regardless if someone is joining as a new member, or you are renewing your membership. The process MUST be accompanied with a membership application form either electronically submitted or sent by postal mail. A big THANK YOU goes out to our webmaster, Bill Firth, KE5TOB, for working on this project. Several weeks of discussion, planning and testing went into this website modifi-cation. Bill did a great job. Thanks also to Bill Kent, N5UJC, Terry Zikes, W4RCN and John Scott, KF5ROL for their input and suggestions.

SOCIAL COMMITTEE

Since this newsletter is early, Marcie and the committee have not had a chance to plan our next breakfast or dinner. We will notify everyone when our October activities are set.

OCTOBER 9, 2016 – Cystic Fibrosis Ride for Life. This is a 100 mile bike ride that goes around the Volcano Vista area in/near Albuquer-que. It starts and stops at the Hispanic Cultural Center on 4th and Bridge. Looking for all positions, station operators and SAG drivers. Please include availability and any preference (no promises, but an effort will be made to accommodate preferred assignments). This event is being coordinated by Ron Guerrero KF5MTU: 505-358-8809 or [email protected]. October 16, 2016 – Duke City Marathon. Albuquerque area ama-teurs have supported this event for more than 20 years. As in recent past years, the marathon will follow an out-and-back course from downtown Albuquerque north along the bosque bike path to Paseo del Norte and east to a turnaround point near Edith Blvd. A half marathon and 10K and 5K runs are included in the event, as well as several walks of varying distances. We will need a substantial num-ber of volunteers to cover rest stops along the course, to provide medical communications, and to shadow race officials as well as a few bicycle mobile stations and sag vehicles.

VETERANS DAY TAILGATE

Just a note to remind everyone of our upcoming annual Chuck Palmer Veterans Day Tailgate, sponsored by our club. Terry Zipes, W4RCN has been working on it. The location will again be in the In-tel parking lot. Terry has taken care of securing the location, insur-ance issues, burrito wagon, etc. I believe the date will be November 12. Time to start talking it up on the local nets. I will let you all know the exact details as soon as the event plans are finalized.

THE 220 MHZ BAND NEEDS YOUR HELP!

The little used 1 1/4 meter band is wide open. It is the perfect place for rag chewing, data work, linking, etc, yet no one makes an effort to even acknowl-edge this band. I have been an advo-cate for 220 for 30 years, having a re-peater on 220 for the past 30 years. We really should make some effort to use this band, otherwise, we risk losing it. You can purchase some very nice equipment for as little as $160, and I don’t mean a handheld. The TYT TH-9000 is a 50 watt base/mobile rig in this price range. Jet Stream and Alinco also make 220 base/mobiles. Don’t forget the Chinese, who are coming out with $130 tribanders. Questions? Let me know. The club affiliate 224.48 repeater is up and waiting!

When we think back, we sometimes wonder what made us change certain things in our lives, why we did certain things, what made us go down a par-ticular path, what began the “chain re-action”. Well, for my “amateur radio chain reaction”, I will have to say it was “ your guys in the white tent ” that
