Pension & Financial Concerns

Each year when I attend the April meeting of Provincial Pen-sion and Retirement Concerns Committee for RTO, our agenda in-cludes going to the Ontario Teacher’s Pension Plan annual meeting. This year on April 6, in the pouring rain, we walked down to the Car-lu to attend the meeting. Once inside we received a warm welcome to the highly organized event as most large organizations do for their AGM’s. I believe the at-tendance at the meeting was slightly lower this year. The usual, tightly scripted presentations from senior staff at OTPP were finished in good time followed by questions from the floor. If there was a theme for the questions from the floor it was about divesting from fossil fuel investments because of environmental con-cerns. After about an hour the event wraps up and we stay for their great re-ception serving lots of food and drink. Fast Facts from the OTPP Annual Report

$175.6 billion in assets in the plan $5.7 billion payroll (pensions) paid in 2016 136,000 teachers enjoying their pension 318,000 both active and retired connected to the plan 1100 employees at OTPP take care of our pension for us 4.2% return on investments in 2016 1.3:1 ratio of active to retired teachers in 2016 71 is the average of a pensioner 12 pensioners have been drawing a pension for more that 50 years – from

Fay Farmer’s Travels

Now that fall is here perhaps it is time to plan a winter holiday, away from the cold and snow. Longstay vacations are good value for the money and Merit Travel is offering several, intriguing hosted getaways this winter in Eu-rope, Asia, USA, Central America, the Caribbean and the South Pacific, some with cruise add-ons. In the past, I have been lucky enough to visit most of these places. Our RTO member, Bryan Marjoram, is hosting an exciting longstay in Greece which includes excursions and a cruise to some of my favourite places there. I also really like Arizona with its fabulous scenery, dry air, sunshine and numerous places of interest and Torremolinos, Spain, which has picturesque ac-commodations on the beach promenade with stores, restaurants, entertainment, an award-winning marina, local buses and easy access to local places of interest. Kendra Tainsh will provide more information about Merit's Longstays and have brochures available at our fall luncheon. The no-fly Caribbean Cruise Kendra is hosting in March is proving very popular, filling fast. Senior Discovery Tours also offer longstay holidays. I went with them to exot-ic Bali two years ago. Two of our Executive members have had amazing, challenging experienc-es. Heather Griffin, covering about 50k daily, cycled along the Danube River from Passau, Germany to Vienna, Austria, and through some of Slovakia to Buda-pest, Hungary. She booked this spectacular, popular tour through BikeTours.com. Morris Tait hiked the James Way section of the El Camino Santiago trail from St. Jean-Pied-de-Port on the French border through northern Spain to Santiago be-fore spending a few days in beautiful Barcelona with its impressive Gaudi archi-tecture, including the Sagrada Familia church. Morris booked his adventure through Senior Tours in Toronto. This past April I had an enjoyable whirlwind, ten-day hosted longstay tour in Paris which included excursions to the Louvre, Norte Dame Cathedral, the medieval Marais district, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower at sunset, Montmartre, Moulin Rouge, Vimy Ridge, the palace of Versailles, a Seine River cruise, Giverney, where Monet lived and painted and Reims, home of the legend-ary monk, Dom Perignon, who accidentally invented champagne. Senior Discov-ery Tours offers this trip spring and fall and hires an excellent, informative lo-cal guide. If you would like to share your favourite destination, tour or travel company, please Email me.

Happy, safe travels!

From the Editor

Hello again, RTO Dist. 30 members. I hope you enjoy Issue #47 of your newsletter, The Applepress. We have tried to include a number of items of interest to you, and possibly to your children or grandchildren, having to do with medical insurance, the RTO/ERO Foundation, travel, your pension, as well as information about the upcoming Fall, 2017, AGM and Luncheon Meeting. I would also like to mention two of our new initiatives to keep you informed: our new E-Blast which is an in-formational update emailed midway between Applepress issues to those of you whose email address we have on file and our Facebook page. I will post items on our page that I hope will be of interest to you as soon as I can. Work is continuing on our new RTO sponsored web page by Philip Palmer, our new Webmaster. I am sure that it will be fully operational before long. That is why both our web sites are listed on page one. Your executive is planning a number of special activities to celebrate RTO/ERO’s 50th Anniversary. Among them are several “Hava Java on us” get togethers. They will be lo-cated in four community locations - Brighton Tim Hortons, Campbellford Tim Hortons, Port Hope Tim Hortons, on Hwy 28, and Bowmanville McDonald’s, Clarington Centre Dates are in the calendar box on page 2 and all will begin at 10:00AM. Pick any date or come to all four. There will also be a special Spring, 2018 Luncheon about which there will be more information later.

Report of the District Health & Insurance Representative

As of this writing the heat of the summer seems over. Hopefully we will not endure the rain we had back in the spring-so many battered beaches, and standing water to encourage the proliferation of bac-teria and bugs. We must protect ourselves from not only from the bugs but also from the sun (skin cancer.) Some information from the District Health Representatives Meeting in June is listed below:

The Open Enrolment Plan from January 1 to April 30 brought 219 new mem-bers who transferred from individual health plans.

The news letters "Updated 2017"and "Going Places 2016-17" are sent to mem-bers participating in the Extended Health Care Plan.

The deadline for participants to submit their claims is the end of the calendar year following the year in which the expenses were incurred.

In health wise 2016 , the interesting fact that is that of the top 20 drugs paid for under RTO/EHC plan, 12 are not currently covered by the Ontario Drug Plan. We need the EHC Plan to cover the cost of drugs not covered by the ODP. Remember RTO/ERO EHC covers Vision Care -$400.00 for glasses, also aids and appliances, access to Best Doctors, Eldercare, and Venngo. This is taken from my insurance plans manual section 1-5. In part it says “Johnson Inc. established a Complex Claims Unit in 2014." The purpose of this unit is "to handle claims that require more time , are sensi-tive in nature or require a dedicated individual .who will spend whatever time is necessary, from the onset of the claim all the way through to resolution." A topic I have been asked about is, "Can my spouse / dependent children tele-phone Johnson Inc. Plan Benefits Claims for my specific claim information?" If you would like Johnson Inc. to communicate with spouse/children you must send the request in writing. Privacy legislation requires this. As far as I know the dental claims are reimbursed based on the 2014 Guide for General Practioners. I am asking that, if possible, you seriously consider donating to our Foundation, for training of our health care professionals in geriatrics, gerontology, and geri-atric research. There is only one geriatrician for every 15,495 older Canadians.

Minutes of the Spring 2017 Luncheon Meeting of RTO/ERO District 30, Northumberland

President Heather Griffin called the meeting to order and welcomed the 75 members attending. Sharon Staples led the group in singing O Canada. In Memoriam - Heather read the list of those who had passed away, followed by a moment of silence in their honour. Guest Speaker - Jim Grieve, RTO/ERO executive director brought words of welcome from the Provincial Office. RTO has 48 districts, including 2 in B.C. totalling 76, 000 members. His topic was Strategic Planning ----- Vision Into Action. The three key strategies are:

Improve the Lives of the Members and Seniors Be a Trusted Voice for the Educational Community Broaden the Membership Base

Jim then gave examples of how to achieve these goals - Improve Lives - newsletters, E-Blast, luncheons, Goodwill, ask members

what to improve their lives etc. Trust - meet local politicians, be a resource for community volunteers,

serve on municipal senior coalitions, publicize local grants etc. Membership - marketing RTO/ERO, use “31 Benefits of Membership” and a

Challenges he faced were that he couldn’t type, finding resource people, and the fact that he’s in his mid eighties. The cost of the book was $10, 000. Heather introduced the current District 30 executive and asked each person if they wished to say a few words.

President - Heather Griffin Privacy/Photography - Don Colby explained that we use the Provincial data

base for both regular and electronic mail. Members must let them know if they have changed either of their addresses. If your name is included with a picture, you must sign a release. If the name is not published, there is no problem.

News about the RTO/ERO Foundation The Foundation has been very busy this year with the further development of the granting program. Following the Board's decision last fall to increase building the capacity of the Foundation, it is now supporting eleven projects, including the ongoing work of Dr. Paula Rochon, RTO/ERO Chair in Geriatric Medicine, and has now awarded grants of nearly $250 000 in just the last few months. Recipients of the recent four community-based projects that aim to address so-cial isolation in vulnerable seniors include London, Guelph, Ottawa and Prince Edward. County. Funding of these projects is made possible with the support of RTO/ERO mem-bers and friends who provide the Foundation with the sustainable funding that enables it to focus on granting and sharing its impact. "Age-related research and the training of healthcare professionals in geriatrics and gerontology is more critical than ever and the RTO/ERO Foundation is one of the few Canadian foundations providing funding in this area. It is only through the collective impact of the retired and retiring educational community that the Foundation is able to address this funding gap. As a member of RTO/ ERO you are providing the kind of leadership needed to en-courage others to contribute to this important work and... you are contributing to a healthier and more active aging experience for older adults. Thank you to all Foundation donors!” (Joanne Murphy, Chair of the Board of Di-rectors) You can visit the Foundation website at: www.embrace-aging.ca.

How Your Donation Helps… Your tax-deductible gift will support projects like these:

Help identify vulnerable, isolated seniors and remove the barriers that prevent them from actively engaging in their community

Train future orthopedic surgeons on how to interact more effectively with their senior patients

Create an evidence-based tool to be used by volunteers and family members to improve the cognitive abilities of de-mentia sufferers

Mentor medical students to encourage them to specialize in geriatrics

And so much more...

Each Year, the Provincial RTO awards up to $4000.00 to Districts for com-munity organizations. Aims and objectives of Project Service to Others are:

To provide financial assistance (to a maximum of $4,000.00) to education-related and/or other community projects.

To contribute to a variety of projects and thereby raise the profile of RTO/ERO by demonstrating to active teachers, other educators, and to the public that RTO/ERO and its members care about and serve their communities and about public education, and are willing to help others who need assistance.

To promote District/Unit participation in local, provincial and overseas ed-ucational/community projects.

To demonstrate to potential RTO/ERO members that RTO/ERO is a dy-namic organization to which they should consider belonging when they retire from active teaching.

If you are involved in an organization and would like to apply, go to www.rto-ero.org and download the new 2018 Application, when it is posted in the fall of 2017. Submit the application to Charlotte Majic at [email protected]. The District executive will select one application to be forwarded to the Provin-cial Office which will make the final selection for an award.

A note about our last year’s Service to Others Project

Can you imagine walking into a church hall and being met by 15 tutors (some retired teachers) and about 15 families from countries like Syria, Thailand, Cuba, China, Ecuador, Poland, Venezuela, India, Columbia and Sri-Lanka? Well, I attended the volunteer recognition potluck The Help Centre’s ESL Program was hosting at Trinity United Church in Cobourg. This gathering was to acknowledge the efforts, kindness and dedication of the volunteer tu-tors to this program. The RTO Project Service to Others (PSTO) awarded $4000 to The Help Centre last year, which allowed the ESL program to purchase manuals and a laptop to help Learners develop their English Language skills and to in-teract and support each other in their goals to become Canadian.
