Our little Kindergarteners have grown and developed so much over the Winter break! We would like to extend our thanks to parents for helping students finish their review homework over the break. Literacy: Students will continue to learn alphabet sounds, link sounds to create words and start journaling using sight words. Just a reminder that students are expected to read 20 minutes daily. Math: Students will continue to learn about sound and action patterns, 2-D shapes and sorting objects based on single attrib-utes. Science: Students will continue to explore living and non-living, learn about winter seasonal changes and how some animals, such as polar bears and birds, adapt to seasonal changes. Social Studies: Students will continue to learn about themselves with a focus on how they look like (similarities and differences with others). 7 Habits: We will be concentrating on Habit 4; “Think Win- Win.” Students will learn how they can practice this habit in their lives by making deposits into other’s emotional bank accounts and by problem solving when issues arise. We try to think about what other people want and not just what we want! Sincerely, Ms. Chidleyand Ms. Kaur

Grade 1
Wow! Our little grade 1’s have grown and developed so much over the break! We encourage parents to con-tinue to read with their children for 20 minutes per night on a daily basis.
Literacy: Students have been learning short vowels over the past couple of months and will now move onto long vowels. Students will be focusing on practicing Primer and Grade One Sight words. They will learn the difference between a noun and verb. Also, they will be exploring the difference between an asking sentence and a telling sentence.
Math: Students will learn the correct steps to solving word problems. They continue to work on addi-tion and subtraction from 1-18.
Science: In January, we started a new science unit: The Senses! Students are also learning about Penguins and we look forward to the Grade 1 Field Trip to the Zoo in February .
Social: What are some of the differences between rural and urban communities? Students are going to find out through books, videos and class discussions!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Raeewal and Mrs. Baninoor Kaur

For Literacy, we are continuing our Expository unit. Expository texts tell the reader how and why things are the way they are, or how things
work. Students will learn how to research on a topic of choice by using different forms to collect information such as books, internet, videos,
etc. Our goal is to generate details, by extending on a simple idea. We will do this by using text organizers such as the “5 W’s” (Who, What,
Where, When and Why).
In math we are focusing on our addition and subtraction strategies unit. In this unit students will be able to develop number sense and represent
algebraic expressions in multiple ways. Students will demonstrate an understanding of addition (limited to 1- and 2 digit numerals) with answers
to 100* and the corresponding subtraction by using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support of manipula-
tives.
For science, we are currently looking at our “Hot and Cold temperature” unit. In this unit our goal is to have students recognize the effects of
heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating and cooling. Our next unit will be Exploring Liquids. In this unit, students will learn how to
compare water with one or more other liquids, such as cooking oil, glycerine or water mixed with liquid detergent. Students will recognize
different liquids based on characteristics, such as color, ease of flow, tendency of drops to form a ball shape (bead), interactions with other
liquids and interactions with solid materials.
Our concentration for social studies has been on looking at various communities within Canada. Students were to demonstrate an understand-
ing of cultures in Meteghan, Saskatoon and Iqaluit. In class, we focused on how these communities have evolved over time. We are looking at
our second unit which is based on looking at people. Students will learn to appreciate the diversity and vastness of Canada’s land and people.

In Language Arts, Students continue to learn to write using a variety of formats. We have finished Narrative writing and Procedural Writing. Mrs. Parhar’s Class is thankful to all the parents for sending the delicious treats that we got to taste as a part of our Procedural Writing Unit. We will be working on Persuasive Writing next. Persuasive
writing helps students formulate specific reasons for their opinions, and provides an opportunity to re-
search facts related to their opinions. We will continue working on weekly spelling words as well as vocabulary words.
In math, we are focusing on our “Addition and Subtraction Strategies” unit. In this unit students will further devel-op their number sense and represent algebraic expressions in multiple ways. Students will demonstrate an under-standing by using personal strategies for adding and subtracting with and without the support of manipulatives.
In Social Studies, we just landed in the country of Tunisia. We will keep discovering the similarities and difference between language, culture, traditions, celebrations and geographical features of Tunisia and Canada.
The “Testing Materials and Designs” unit in Science will engage students in a process of inquiry to study the mate-rials and designs used in construction task. They will test the strength of different construction materials, methods of joining and structure designs. They will learn that many things are considered when materials and designs are selected and that different tasks may require different materials and designs.

A Special Reminder
Here is a special reminder from Student Services….
TALK with your child. This helps expand their vocabulary.
TELL: Use the word "tell." "Tell me about your day." "Tell me about your drawing." "Tell me what you liked about this book." Let them find their own words to describe a book to you.
READ with your child, whenever you can. Story books, fact books, the ingredients in a cook-book, on a menu, or in an item at a grocery store. Everything counts. Ideally, have a special time to read stories every day. If you can't make 15 minutes happen, strive for 5 minutes. Eve-rything makes a difference, and will help your child grow as a reader.
And...reading with your child helps strengthen your connection with them too.
