We believe a person’s well-being is impacted by the relationships and experiences in that person’s life. In particular, exposure to traumatic events as a child can tremendously influence quality of life and increase the chances of experiencing serious mental and physical health conditions.

In this report, you will read about the resilience of those we helped as they overcome traumatic experiences and create brighter futures. You’ll also hear from some of our donors and their commitment to the youth, young adults and families we serve. In addition, we have highlighted a few of our outcomes showing the impact we have made supporting nearly 7,000 youth, young adults, and families across Los Angeles County.

At Hathaway-Sycamores, we strive to provide high quality care by being responsive to the needs of our communities and using evidence-based practices. Together, we can continue to preserve the dignity of the youth, young adults, and families we serve so that they can live healthier, happier lives. This, we hope, will lead to safer and stronger communities. We ask for your ongoing support and partnership as we carry out this vital work.

I remember feeling incred-ibly lonely even when around people. I experienced flashbacks to the trauma I suffered as a child and found myself losing interest in things I was once passionate about. My parents had very little understanding of mental illness or how to help me, so I sought out services myself from Hathaway-Sycamores. My depression did not get better immediately; it persisted and things actually got worse before they got better. I was on a path of self-destructiveness, which led to a hospitalization for a suicide attempt.

However, with the help of my Hathaway-Sycamores team, I gradually learned to trust people again and I eventually found new interests and passions. Today, I run an animal rescue organization and I’m proud to say I have saved over 300 animals. I am also completing my college degree with a major in psychology. I know that I want to be of service to others – I wouldn’t be where I am today without all the people who helped me along the way.

After 20 years of being in a physically abusive relationship, I made the difficult decision to leave my husband. Soon after, I lost my job which led to us being homeless for two years. My son, George*, was deeply affected by this experience. He was failing in high school and was hospitalized multiple times. I felt alone and struggled to help him.

Thankfully, we finally got help from Hathaway-Sycamores. It took a team effort to help George and with their support, he learned how to cope with his feelings and manage his moods. George and I have also learned healthy ways to communicate with the help of our therapist. He is now on track to graduate early from high school and has already completed almost a year of college courses.

Let perseverance be your engine

and hope be your fuel.

Before I got help, I was using drugs, struggling with anxiety, and had dropped out of school. Then, I was in a hit-and-run accident that left me with a traumatic brain injury. I felt like I had gone off the deep end. I was so angry that I became aggressive towards my family and had to be hospitalized. I was doing nothing productive; I felt depressed and hopeless about where my life was going.

I needed a lot of help to adapt to my brain injury and recover from my addiction. I was referred to Hathaway-Sycamores, where I was finally able to process my anger and learn about my anxiety and depression. I also finished high school, and am now a college student. Through my struggles, I learned that I am capable of doing a lot of things and that you can’t expect things to change for you - you have to make them happen.

For over fifty years, the Los Altos Auxiliary has been dedicated to helping children in need. Since 1993, this inspiring group of women have specifically devoted their efforts to improving the lives of the boys at Hathaway-Sycamores’ El Nido residential campus. Their fundraising efforts have provided many upgrades to the campus over the years. Last

year, Los Altos funded a Career Development/Job Training Program and cottage bathroom makeovers. All of their projects have enhanced life at the El Nido campus, but the group does so much more. Equally important to the projects they have funded is the human connection and caring that the members of Los

Altos bring to the boys on campus. They mark birthdays and holidays with gifts and special treats for the boys. Each year the boys enjoy a Halloween Carnival, complete with game booths, treats, pumpkin decorating and prizes hosted by Los Altos. Members deliver homemade goodies and fulfill the boys’ holiday wish lists. Thanks to Los Altos, boys who don’t go home for the holiday

are treated to a special Christmas Day trip to Disneyland. The members recognize the important healing power of small acts of kindness. They know how significant it is for the boys and teens to know that someone cares. The generosity of Los Altos does make a difference!

“Trying to better, in our small way, the l ives of the boys of El Nido, is the passion

of the Los Altos women. We are motivated by the smile on a grateful boy’s face,

when we know that he has not had a lot to smile about in his young l ife.”

There are many reasons Michael Galper is inspired to be a part of Hathaway-Sycamores including the focus on helping the under-served and often forgotten members of our community. Michael is also impressed by how the programs are executed. “I am always struck by the dedication, commitment and passion of the leadership and the tremendous staff. I am also extremely impressed with the innovative methods used to not only focus on the child but on the entire family.” He is deeply moved by hearing personal stories from the children and adults whose lives have been touched by Hathaway-Sycamores. Michael remembers Miguel and Macrina Gutierrez, the childless

couple that became a family of five literally overnight. The pair opened their home and their hearts to three siblings in desperate need of love and stability. “I will never forget meeting with them and seeing the joy those kids have brought to Miguel and Macrina and the impact they have had on the kids.” He also recalls the many success stories that have come out of the Learning Lab over the years, including scholarships to Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Brown, UCLA, Berkeley and USC. “Meeting with all of those kids and recognizing what Hathaway-Sycamores has done for them brings home to me the impact the agency has and makes me so proud to be a part of it.”

We must each consider

what our legacy is going to be.

-Annsley Strong

Page 19: preserving dignity 2 0 1 5 - 2 0 1 6 impactreport

Annsley Strong is the Chair and a Charter Member of Hathaway-Sycamores Legacy Society because of her commitment to caring about the quality of all family lives. “Planning a gift for me is an extension of that commitment: I choose to try to inspire and support others so they remember that it was a fundamental tenet of my life. If you believe, as I do, that the family unit is the foundational aspect of our communities, then its success is critical to the development of strong leaders,” she said.

Annsley’s roots with Hathaway-Sycamores run deep. She was first introduced to our agency as a member of the Los Altos Auxiliary. She has served on our Board of Directors for 15 years and held the position of Board Chair from 2006 to 2008. “I was well aware that our own children thrived in an intact, supportive family unit. I wanted them to understand how lucky they were and to realize that using their resources to help those who aren’t as fortunate improves lives both individually and as components of an over-arching world.” When Annsley joined Hathaway-Sycamores’ Board, one of the first things she did was bring her brood to our El Nido campus, where she and her kids spent much of the summer sharing their soccer expertise with the boys in residential care. At the Legacy Society kickoff event held earlier this year Annsley stated,

“We are providing a foundation today on which to build the next generation and those beyond. Our vision says it all: stronger families, stronger communities.”

HATHAWAY-SYCAMORES LEGACY SOCIETY

ENSURING A BETTER FUTURE FOR CHILDREN, YOUNG ADULTS AND FAMILIES

At Hathaway-Sycamores we create opportunities

for a brighter future for the young adults and fam-

ilies-in-need that we serve. We invite you to our

conversation on planning your legacy, on how best

to give future generations positive opportunities for

a better life by including Hathaway-Sycamores in

your planned giving.

WHAT IS PLANNED GIVING?Planned giving is the transfer of assets to a

designated non-profit organization during a lifetime

or as part of an estate plan. This win-win approach

to philanthropic donations enables you to support

Hathaway-Sycamores and can provide you a tax

benefit now or in the future. This forward-thinking

approach to giving is “planned” because often these

assets are not liquid, have tax consequences and

are generally transferred via a will or other written

means. Planned giving is a powerful choice: it allows

you to give a gift that makes a statement uniquely

yours, one that is reflected not only in its benefits to

those to whom it is given, but also as a component

of how you wish to be remembered.

ident Development at (626) 395-7100 ext. 2519 or
