‘Follow-the-leader’ asteroid discovered

PASADENA, 28 July—Astronomersstudying data from an orbiting NASAobservatory say they’ve discovered thefirst known “Trojan” asteroid orbitingthe sun in the Earth’s orbit. Trojans areasteroids that share an orbit with aplanet near stable points in front of orbehind the planet, but can never collidewith it as they maintain their leading orfollowing position, a NASA release said.

Neptune, Mars and Jupiter and twoof Saturn’s moons share their orbits inour solar system with Trojans. Scientistshad long predicted Earth should have

Trojans, but they have proven difficult tofind because they are relatively smalland would appear near the sun fromEarth’s point of view.

“These asteroids dwell mostly in thedaylight, making them very hard to see,”said Martin Connors of AthabascaUniversity in Canada, lead author of anew paper on the discovery using datafrom NASA’s Wide-field InfraredSurvey Explorer. “But we finally foundone, because the object has an unusualorbit that takes it farther away from thesun than what is typical for Trojans.WISE was a game-changer, giving us apoint of view difficult to have at Earth’ssurface.” The researchers’ hunt throughthe WISE data resulted in two Trojancandidates, and one known as 2010 TK7was confirmed as an Earth Trojan afterfollow-up observations with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on MaunaKea in Hawaii. The asteroid is about1,000 feet in diameter and is about 50million miles from Earth.

“It’s as though Earth is playing followthe leader,” said Amy Mainzer ofNASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory inPasadena, Calif. “Earth always is chasingthis asteroid around.”—Internet

Space station to plunge into oceanat end in 2020

MOSCOW, 28 July—A Russian spaceofficial said Wednesday that once themammoth International Space Stationis no longer needed it will be sent intothe Pacific Ocean.

It’s a plan that’s long been in theworks and is a step to avoid the stationbecoming dangerous space junk. It wassupposed to plunge into the ocean asearly as 2015.

The US recently extended its lifeuntil at least 2020, and there’s been talkof keeping it going even longer.

Vitaly Davydov, deputy head of theRussian space agency, said the orbitingoutpost will be destroyed in a controlled

descent to Earth “so that there is nospace junk left behind.”

Russia sank its Mir space station inthe Pacific in 2001 after 15 years inoperation. Skylab, America’s first spacestation, fell from orbit in 1979 after sixyears in space.

The International Space Station isthe biggest orbiting outpost ever built andcan sometimes be seen from the Earthwith the naked eye. It’s now big enoughfor six residents.

It now consists of more than a dozenmodules built by the US, Russia, Canada,Japan and the European Space Agency.

The first cases in the salmonellaagona outbreak arose in January andhave continued to be reported throughmid-July, the CDC said.

Twenty-five of the 99 illnesseshave been in Texas, the worst hit USstate. In Mexico, the AgricultureMinistry said Tuesday that it was toosoon to know if the Mexican papayasin question were the source of theillness.

US and Mexican authorities “arecarrying out an investigation in bothcountries to determine the source ofthe outbreak of salmonella” so it is nottime for any conclusive comment oncause, said Enrique Sanchez, whoheads up Mexico’s food safety agency.

“For now, Mexican papayascannot be named as the source of theillness,” Sanchez said. Salmonellapoisoning usually causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains within 12 to72 hours of eating, and symptoms canlast up to a week.

Most people recover withouttreatment, but people with weakimmune systems, the elderly and thevery young could be at risk if theinfection spreads to the bloodstream.

Human brains wired to empathize, study finds

A new study reveals

that richer countries

suffer more from

depression than lower-

income countries.

INTERNET

NEW YORK, 28 July—A person’sbrain works hard to empathize orunderstand what it’s like to walk inother people’s shoes, no matter howdifferent they may be, a new studyindicates. Researchers from theUniversity of Southern California foundpeople automatically attempt toempathize — even with those who arephysically very different. To do that, however, people must use two separateregions of their brain.

In a paper, published online byCerebral Cortex, USC researchers foundthat empathy between two people whocan relate to each other more directlyrelies primarily on the intuitive, sensory-motor parts of the brain. A person whoempathizes with someone who is verydifferent or with whom they cannotdirectly relate, however, depends moreon the rationalizing part of the brain.

In conducting the study, USCresearchers showed videos of hands,

feet and a mouth doing “tasks” to awoman who was born without arms orlegs, as well as 13 typically developedwomen. The participants were alsoshown videos of injections being givenon certain parts of the body. As theywatched the videos, the women’s brainswere scanned. Researchers comparedthose scans to pinpoint sources ofempathy.

The researchers found that whenthe woman without limbs watchedvideos of tasks being performed usingbody parts that she did not have, thesensory-motor areas of her brain werestill strongly engaged. The researchersnoted, however, even without limbs, the woman was able to perform some ofthese tasks herself by improvising withthe body parts she did have. If theaction was impossible for her however, another set of brain regions involved indeductive reasoning were also activated, the study pointed out.—Internet
