PowerPoint Presentation

Presenting at the Undergraduate Research ConferenceVictoria OlsenExpository Writing ProgramNew York UniversityApril 2013I will present as if Im presenting at the URC. After I present this talk on presentations, Ill ask two students to share their preparation and experience at the URC (both poster and panel), then we will take questions from you.ALWAYS HAVE A TITLE SLIDE!1AgendaDelivering Your TalkPresenting Experimental ResearchPresenting a Humanities PaperPoster, with Daniela Cassataro, 13Psychology Talk, with Sharyu Hanmantgad, 12Questions

At the URC you will have 8 minutes and be talking on a panel with 4-5 other students. Your audience will be class-sized (12-20) and there will be 2-3 judges of each panel deciding which presentation was best. They judge by content and delivery. 2

I also hope to ease your (natural) anxieties about presenting your work to the public!

3Delivery

Control body languagePresent a professional appearanceMake eye contact

Speak clearlyPresent yourself professionally. Make eye contact with audience. Speak clearly, loudly, and at a comfortable pace. Use appropriate body language. Admit what you dont know (yet). Note that I am using short sentences! Your presentation should feel like an animated conversation.

4Cognitive Overload

Dont read your slides! Use at least a 30 pt font. Keep text to a minimum. Avoid fancy backgrounds or animation.Practice the talk and time yourself. Check on any equipment you will need In advance. Visualize yourself giving the talk, speaking confidently and answering questions.5Overview of Experimental TalkSource: http://www.ruf.rice.edu/~comcoach/intro.html

Introduce yourself, establish your authority, present an overview of what you will present: WHAT problem did you address? HOW did you address it? WHAT did you discover? WHY is it important?Define your terms. Provide visual aids for method and results. Restate your significant finding. Thank your audience and transition to Q and A session.NOTE formatting should be consistent throughout headers, capitalization etc.6Negative RealityMental ContrastingMental Contrasting (Model)Mental ContrastingPositive FutureExpectations are ActivatedStrong Goal CommitmentWeak Goal CommitmentOettingen (2000). Pie Charts. Used to show percentages within a whole. Vertical bar graphs compare quantitative data across time. Horizontal bar graphs are useful for comparing quantative data to other variables, like within a company. Line graphs show trends over time. Use contrasting colors for different variables and keep the variables to a maximum of 4-6 per chart.10Results: Tables

tables are good for side-by-side comparisons of quantitative data .Consider these two tables. If you want to show how your contributions are significantly higher than two other parties, for example, it would be best to show that in the form of a bar chart (below, right). If you're trying to downplay the fact that your contributions are lower than others, however, a table will display that information in a less dramatic or emotional way.11Overview of Humanities Paper

Montgomerys Emily books show us about the status of women writers across cultures and times?Visual analysis and literary quotations as evidence1-2 major points in conclusionTalks in the humanities can be read, but practice reading so you read with dynamics and without stumbling. Illustrate important points or evidence, if appropriate.12Discussion/ConclusionRestate your most important finding

Make it relevant to your audience: link it to real life
