Great horse manure crisis of

1894 This was not just a British crisis: New York had a population of 100,000 horses

producing around 2.5m pounds of manure a day.

The Times newspaper predicted... “In 50 years, every street in London will be buried under nine feet of manure.”

In1898 London and New York got together to discuss how to solve the crisis. It was the world’s first international urban planning conference, but no solution could be found. It seemed urban civilisation was doomed.

What Adverted the crisis: The invention of the affordable motor car. Henry Ford came up with a process of building motor cars at affordable prices.

Electric trams and motor buses appeared on the streets, replacing the horse-drawn buses.

By 1912, this seemingly insurmountable problem had been resolved; in cities all around the globe, horses had been replaced and now motorised vehicles were the main source of transport and carriage

why is the crisis recurring

A 100 years later horses are now used in Polo, Dressage, Jumping, Racing & Western Rodeo for sport and pleasure

We see high density ~ high populous areas of horses and humans living around boarding stables, race tracks, and show grounds; creating thousands of tons of manure every month.

There are 30,000 horses in Lower mainland,

There are 100,000 horses in BC

There are 10,00,000 horses in North America

There are 59,000,000 horses in the world

When a horse is stabled it creates a ton of used bedding a month

Where do you put 59,000,000 tons of manure a month!!!!

equality

Manures are not created equal !

Manure nutrients are generally measured by Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium levels

Poultry– Cow – Horse – They all have very different characteristics, and further change, when the bedding source is mixed as an effective bi-product or fertilizer.

From a waste management perspective used bedding from horses can make up as much as 90% of the fecal manure creating huge volumes that cannot be easily disposed of.

We need to better define the feces from the used bedding material especially when local regulations are being enforced.

Bedding quality and quantity

GreenScene uses a proprietary grading system for calculating horses within the sales & marketing model. Horses can be categorized as “pets” (expensive ones) and depending on the level of comfort required in a stall the bedding, manure, and cost is variable.

Horse manure the naked truth

Horses have a single stomach and can not throw up

Horses create a fecal powder around undigested hay and grass

for excretion and is relatively dry

Wood fibre Bedding makes up 70-90% of the “manure” which

becomes soaked in urine.

Horse manure however has little nutrient value when mixed

with wood fibre.

While the horse manure itself is a good fertilizer, the sawdust

and wood shavings are not crop friendly. That's because when

wood breaks down in the soil, it requires nitrogen and a

nitrogen deficiency occurs, which stunts the growth of crops.

Used bedding left unattended can cause methane off gassing,

leaching and phosphorous hot spot leading to diseases, flies,

and environmental hazards. Plus huge pile of….

Horse owners and equestrian business need to have a better

handle on their manure storage with covered bins, frequent

hauling and removal practices, all in accordance with

regulations, and legal dumping sites.

BC agricultural waste control

regulation mandate

To manage the Impacts to human health and the environment associated with the management of agricultural wastes

The primary environmental issues of concern to the ministry are surface water quality, ground water quality, cumulative effects, and air quality.

agricultural waste control regulation

In the rainy season Manure must be covered at all times

New storage facilities require covered roof, walls and impermeable floor, and 30 meter setback distance from watercourses, if storage is longer than 2 weeks

No direct access to waterways

Horse Manure is not to be spread on fields

Horse Manure is not to be put into landfill

Regulation from GVRD BC and the EPA throughout America are getting strong and tighter and disposal options are diminishing.

Horse owners need to consider what regulations they have to live with”

waste management BMP

However the problem should be look at - not ”what to do with it” as much as “how do we get rid of it responsibly.”

Used horse bedding is not good to spread on fields due to the lignum in the wood

It has little nutritional value to use as soil amender

Left untreated – it creates off gassing, leaching and phosphorous hot spots

AND there is so much of it …… what solutions are out there?

horse manure avg per 1000 lb horse

31 lbs of feces + 2.4 gallons of urine = 51 lbs of manure

8-15lb bedding + 51lbs of manure = 3 cubic ft of stall waste per day

With 100,000 horses in BC that’s 110 Million cubic ft of “manure "or 4,074,064 cubic yards or 800 football fields every year. The net cost of replacement bedding to BC equine owners is $110 M

pain

Horse owners in North America spends > $4.5 billion per year in bedding materials and manure disposal costs.

The industry is facing a growing shortage of affordable wood fibre bedding material.

while facing the added challenge of strict environmental regulations, that is forcing the equine industry to spend more money on their horses in a tight economy.

solution

GSA has perfected a patented and proprietary closed-loop process to produce premium recycled wood fibre equine bedding that is cheaper, faster on demand delivery with a higher ROI than current baled shavings

Reducing bedding disposal costs while eliminating environmental concerns, such as landfills, off-gassing & leaching. Producing a competitive, superior recycled bedding under local conditions.

A product that improves horse and human health

through a better process and a better bedding.

hauling regulations

GreenScene is the solution to the haulers with the ability to transfer their waste to an approved facility in closer proximity than alternative licensed disposal sites.

The process will save haulers money on transportation, allow for multiple trips in a day, have a safe and consistent drop off location, and potentially regulate tipping fees.

A proprietary inventory control process is being developed to help all haulers, authorities and GreenScene know where they pick up and drop off manure, how much and what quality of bedding is being picked up.

GSA delta

GreenScene has a fully operating plant in Delta, Vancouver Canada.

The GSA 1000 Delta Plant can produce up to 11,000 wet tons of manure – to create 1M cubic yards of recycled wood fibre horse bedding for

resale to the local community.

The GSA 2000 can produce 400,000 bales of 2.5 cubic ft. compressed 2:1 –

A NEW STANDARD IN BEDDING - GSA 4000

The Florida Plant model will be the GSA-4000 processing c. 45,000 wet tons to produce c. 4 million cubic yards of bedding from 4000-5000 horses. This creates 800,000 bales of compressed bedding

retailing at $5.00 / bale or to local pricing.

sustainability

The GSA bedding product is branded “Refined” Golden HABIT Bedding (High Absorbent Bedding Intentionally Treated) and is cleaner and safer than the original.

It can be recycled multiple times and by adding 10% new shavings to the outgoing supply, the bedding can be recycled indefinitely.

The bi-product of organics and wood fines are separated and used as the fuel source to run a carbon neutral facility.

And as a sustainable initiative it combats the two major global problems, good quality bedding and increasing cost of disposal.

conclusion

Manures are not equal and should be sub categorized

Used stall bedding from horses is a critical problem globally

Regulators are coming down on farms to solve the problem

We should take a closer look at agricultural processes that are good for the environment, solve an agricultural problem and support agricultural economics to better review if they can function on Ag land to help stimulate the removal of waste bedding without the high cost of industrial land.
